WFTGA is the global forum for professional tourist guides worldwide. http://www.wftga.org WFTGA consists of:

WFTGA, the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, is a not for profit, non political organisation which brings together professional tourist guides and encourages standards in guiding around the world. WFTGA is recognized as an NGO by UNESCO, is an affiliate member of UNWTO, and is consulted by committees dealing with European standards (CEN) and International standards (ISO). Full Members (professional Tourist Guide Associations)
2. Individual Members (where no association exists or where no association is a member of the WFTGA)
3. Affiliate Member (tourism related bodies)

Active since 1985, today the WFTGA represents Tourist Guides from over 100 countries, encouraging the qualification of Tourist Guides in accordance with the adopted Definition (ISO 18513 /CEN 13908:2003) of a Tourist Guide: A Tourist Guide is a person who guides visitors in the language of their choice and interprets the cultural and natural heritage of an area, which person normally possesses an area-specific qualification usually issued and/or recognised by the appropriate authority. The WFTGA is delivering specifically designed courses for tourist guides and trainers of tourist guides and has done so at the request of various agencies including the UNWTO, UNESCO, GIZ and Ministries related to tourism as well as our member tourist guides associations, since 1996. Throughout 2020 the WFTGA Training Division explored opportunities for learning in the virtual environment and, as a contingency, is currently offering some of their courses as a blended version with an online component in preparation for the practical training. WFTGA accredits tourist guide training courses in accordance and compliance with the European Standard EN 15565:2008 ‘Tourism Services – Requirement for the provision of professional tourist guide training and qualification programmes’. This standard stipulates that guiding skills, and contextualised area-specific knowledge are delivered simultaneously both theoretically and practically.

🌏 IN THE NEWS: 📰 Area Representative Barbara Dimas, at the Institute of Australian Tour Guides Annual General Meeting (24 September 2026)

“I was contacted by Fran Cane and Sofi Lidgren of the Institute of Australian Tour Guides (IATG) to present at their Annual General Meeting on 18 August 2026.

They were interested to find out what was new in tourist guiding with the WFTGA. I gave a general introduction to the WFTGA for the IATG members. I was able to briefly speak to the membership, promoting the Global Networking Forum (GNF) on 14 October (15th | Sydney time) as well as the 2028 WFTGA Convention in Peru.

At the follow up meeting on 8 September, Fran Cane and Sofi Lidgren introduced me and I opened by encouraging members to attend the GNF to discuss the topic of Fair Pay.

Other topics that were discussed included:
🔸️ Team Africa working on an AI Toolkit. They were very interested and I told them I would keep them updated.

🔹 ️Newsletter: Fran asked me to write an article about the WFTGA for their upcoming newsletter.

🔸 ️Cultour Card: Angela Turek (former Area Representative) talked about WFTGA advantages like the Conference and the Cultour card, which she had used in Paris and London. There were enquiries about the digital Cultour Card.

🔹️ Constitution and delegates: we discussed the Constitution which is being revised from one delegate per country to one vote per delegate per association.

They are very interested in maintaining a closer tie to the WFTGA."

WFTGA at the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington DC Trade Show & Job Fair ✨️

On 9 September 2026, the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington DC held their annual Trade Show & Job Fair at Arlington County Library. Representing the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA), Global Brand Ambassador Maricar Donato had the pleasure of meeting professional and new guides, sharing what WFTGA stands for, and introducing WFTGA’s mission, purpose, aims and objectives.

A special highlight was promoting the next WFTGA Convention in Peru - an opportunity for tourist guides from around the world to come together to learn, connect, exchange ideas and strengthen our profession. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and curiosity.

/ 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 / Let's say hello to our Tourist Guide colleagues in 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 and specifically the Tallinna Giidide Ühing / Tallinn Guide Association.

The Tallinn Guides Association is a non-profit association that was established in 1992 with the aim of ensuring a high professional level of guides operating in 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐧 and the good quality of the guide service provided to guests. Only guides who have passed the certification exam and for whom continuous professional development is important can join the association. The members understand how great a guide’s responsibility is in maintaining and shaping the image of Estonia and Tallinn.

Since 2007, the association has been a member of the global umbrella organisation of guides, the WFTGA (World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations), which unites over 200,000 guides from more than 70 countries. In 2011, the association had the honour of organising the XIV World Congress of WFTGA in Tallinn. Since 2016, they've also been a member of FEG (European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations). The Tallinn Guides Association has 150 members who offer tours in 20 languages.

Tourist guides have a unique role to play in building bridges between people. Through stories, cultural exchange and shared experiences, they help us see the world through different perspectives - fostering curiosity, respect and greater understanding.

The WFTGA honours tourist guides around the world as 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 through travel. 💙

A new way of seeing the world 🌍

The UN has backed the Equal Earth map projection, which shows the size of Africa and other continents more accurately than the traditional Mercator map. Africa is actually around 14 times larger than Greenland, despite often appearing similar in size on traditional maps.

For tourist guides, perspective matters. Maps show us where we are, but guides help us understand what we’re seeing.

When Sushi Meets Ceviche: A Celebration of Friendship in Washington, D.C.
Japanese and Peruvian traditions meet around a community table as tourist guides celebrate friendship, culture and the journey toward Peru 2028 On September 3, 2026, approximately 30 tourist guides gathered in a Peruvian backyard in the Washington, D.C. area to welcome KiTG host organizers Mizu Mizutani and Hilo Hanano for an evening of food, culture and friendship. Hosted by Peruvian-born entrepreneur Mistral Anampa, the potluck celebration brought together Guild guides who had traveled to Japan for the 2026 WFTGA Convention as well as those looking forward to future journeys to WFTGA Conventions .
