⛩️ Enoshima Tenno Festival ⛩️

One of Japan’s most iconic traditional festivals! The Enoshima Tenno Festival is held every year on the second Sunday of July. The festival celebrates Yasaka Shrine, one of the shrines within the Enoshima Shrine complex.

Accompanied by the lively rhythms of traditional matsuri-bayashi music, a sacred portable shrine (mikoshi) carrying the deity departs from Enoshima, crosses the water to the shrine on the opposite shore, and then returns in a vibrant procession, creating one of the festival’s most breathtaking traditions!

The festival's biggest highlight? Watching the mikoshi being carried across the sea — a rare sight even in Japan! This "ocean crossing" (kaijo togyo) starts around 11:00 AM. For the best close-up view of this rare sea-crossing mikoshi, head to the plaza just on your left as you enter Enoshima.

Schedule:
9:00 — Festival begins at Hetsunomiya Shrine grounds
10:00 — Yasaka Shrine mikoshi departs, heading down the east stairs to Nakamise Street
11:00 — Sea crossing! Ritual at Kaisaku-mae, entering the water from the north green space
12:30 — Higashiura ritual in Higashi-machi (near Bunsa Shokudo) — mikoshi departs with festival music, passing the bridge → Subana Street → Route 467
14:00 — Mikoshi from Koyurugi Shrine welcomes the procession in front of Ryukoji Temple, then heads to Koshigoe → Koyurugi Shrine
15:00 — Arrival ceremony (Chakugyo-sai)
16:10 — Departs Koyurugi Shrine
17:00 — Koyurugi Shrine's mikoshi sends off Yasaka Shrine's mikoshi in front of Ryukoji Temple
18:00 — Arrival back at Enoshima — Kangyo-sai ritual held in front of Yasaka Shrine, deity returns to the main shrine, festival concludes

＼🌊✨ The "Hidden Path" of Enoshima ✨🌊／

Between Katase Coast and Enoshima, a sandbar called "Tombolo" appears only during low tide.
This is a natural wonder where the sea parts, allowing you to walk across to the island! 👣

Here is the schedule for when you can use the stairs to land on Enoshima via the Tombolo path 🪜:

June 14 (Sun) ・ 9:10 AM – 11:10 AM
June 15 (Mon) ・ 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
June 16 (Tue) ・ 10:40 AM – 12:40 PM
June 17 (Wed) ・ 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
June 18 (Thu) ・ 12:20 PM – 2:20 PM
Note: June 15, 16, and 17 are the best days to see it!
