Blue Planet Prize

Blue Planet Prize The international environmental award sponsored by the Asahi Glass Foundation

Environmental conservation is one of the most pressing of the global issues humankind faces. Global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion, tropical rainforest destruction, and river and ocean pollution are just some of the results of human activities that are having adverse affects on the Earth. In 1992, the year of the Earth Summit, the Asahi Glass Foundation established the Blue Planet Prize, an a

ward presented to individuals or organizations worldwide in recognition of major contributions to solving global environmental problems. The Prize is offered in the hopes of encouraging efforts to bring about the healing of the Earth’s fragile environment. The award’s name was inspired by the remark "the Earth was blue," uttered by the first human in space, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, upon viewing our planet. The Blue Planet Prize was so named in the hopes that our blue planet will be a shared asset capable of sustaining human life far into the future.

Say no to plastic bags.
Use public transit.
Choose an EV.

Small choices shape the world.

Professor Daniel Sperling, 2013 Blue Planet Prize laureate, shares his vision for the future of sustainable transportation.

Technology is advancing.
But at the same time, a backlash is emerging——
and that is exactly why our choices matter now.

⏰ What time do you think it is on the Environmental Doomsday Clock?

The time on the Clock reflects the sense of crisis that environmental experts worldwide feel about the survival of humankind, expressed through the hands of the clock.

Since 1992, the Asahi Glass Foundation has been conducting the "Questionnaire on Environmental Problems and the Survival of Humankind" among experts worldwide, and this year marks the 35th survey.

This environmental survey includes a question about the time on the Clock.

A report summarizing the survey results and the time on the Environmental Doomsday Clock for 2026 will be announced in September.

🦋 8.1 million. Any guesses what this number refers to?
The answer: the estimated number of plant and animal species on Earth — approximately 8.1 million.
The Asahi Glass Foundation has released a comic for kids on our website that teaches the "differences among living things" and the balance of nature through fun quizzes.

Informed on the work of IPBES (the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), the comic is designed to inspire a journey from "Learning → Thinking → Taking Action."

🔬 Great for use in the classroom, too!
Through quizzes such as:
• How many species of living things are there?
• What will happen if one species increases too much?
• What can we do to protect biodiversity?
…readers are encouraged to think about ecosystem balance and biodiversity.

The comic helps develop key scientific skills:
• The ability to observe and analyze natural phenomena from multiple perspectives
• A mindset for thinking about the relationship between people and nature

A great resource for science and environmental education in the classroom.
📖 Designed for elementary school students
📖 Suitable for both classroom and home learning
