Collaboration with Liepāja 2027 is now beginning to take shape for next year’s programme 🇱🇻✨
This time, Ilze Zarina from Kuldīga — the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town and one of the hosting cities of Liepāja 2027 — visited Japan on a research trip. Her journey took her across western Japan, including Kyoto, Hyogo, and Nara 😊
The projects she is planning together with Japan focus on “gardening & landscape culture” and “traditional wooden architecture.”
In Kyoto, we had meetings with Professor Makoto Suzuki and Ms. Yuri Ugaya, both of whom are planned to be invited to Kuldīga in the future. Escaping the bustle of the city, Yuri-san kindly guided us through the beautiful Hakuryuen Garden, quietly nestled in the lush green mountain countryside.
The following day, we visited the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum. Thanks to a special guided tour by curator Mr. Sakamoto, Ilze was able to fully immerse herself in the world of Japan’s master temple carpenters, traditional architecture, and exquisite craftsmanship. Personally, it is one of my favourite museums in Japan, and once again it was such a luxurious and inspiring experience.
Finally, we travelled to the ancient heart of Japan, Asuka Village. Thanks to previous connections, Mr. Kiji and many wonderful people from the village warmly supported us throughout the visit. Together, we organised a talk event for local government officials, tourism stakeholders, urban development practitioners, and cultural professionals.
The theme of the talk was:
“Historic Landscapes and Local Happiness — The Citizen DIY Model of Kuldīga, Latvia.”
Ilze shared insights from over 20 years of work in heritage landscape preservation, especially her efforts to create DIY restoration hubs where local citizens can learn repair techniques and actively maintain their own historic townscape. The event sparked many thoughtful questions and enthusiastic reactions, making it a truly joyful exchange.
This gathering also became part of a new initiative we launched this year: building “Local × Local” networks between Europe and Japan 🤝
Moving forward, we hope to continue bringing inspiration born from the “differences” between Europe and Japan, while fostering new forms of cultural co-creation across borders 😊
