"Thomas Hsiang Received Ōkura Prize"

The nomination committee for the Baron Ōkura Prize selected Thomas Hsiang as the recipient of the Ōkura Kishichiro Prize (2026) on 3 February 2026.

The Ōkura Prize is the most prestigious award in the Japanese Go community, recognising long-term contributions to the promotion and development of the game.

After being informed of the excellent news, Mr. Hsiang immediately replied us by email, saying that "I am very happy to know of the finalization of the selection! It’s such an extraordinary honor! Thank you, and please pass on my gratitude to the committee members.”

He also shared with us, “At this time, my health does not allow me to go to Japan for the ceremony. I have had three stays at the hospital this year and had a pacemaker installed last week.”

Ten days later, he passed away on 12 February 2026.

On 31 March 2026, the annual award ceremony of the Nihon Kiin was held at the Nihon Kiin in Tokyo. The Ōkura Prize ceremony took place on the same occasion.

Hsiang became the first foreign recipient of the Ōkura Prize in 32 years, following Chen Zude (China) in 1994.

Past recipients of the Ōkura Prize include many of the most influential figures in Go history, among them Iwamoto Kaoru, Go Seigen, Minoru Kitani, Fujisawa Shūkō, Edward Lasker, Ing Chang-ki, Cho Nam-cheol, and the creators of Hikaru no Go.
