🌏 News Monday 60: Japan Successfully Lands Reusable Rocket Prototype 🚀

Japan has reached an important milestone in reusable rocket development.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries successfully completed the first flight test of the RV-X experimental vehicle at the Noshiro Rocket Testing Center in Akita Prefecture.

🔍 Key takeaways:
・Successful vertical take-off and landing
The RV-X reached 11 metres, moved around 16 metres horizontally, and landed upright after a flight lasting around 40 seconds.
・A demonstrator for future rockets
RV-X is not an orbital rocket. It was built to test the technologies and procedures required to launch, land, and eventually reuse rocket stages.
・Reusability could reduce launch costs
Recovering the first stage – one of the most expensive rocket components – could lower costs, shorten turnaround times, and enable more frequent launches.
・Global competition is accelerating
SpaceX already uses its reusable Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets in regular operations, while its Starship is being developed for even greater capabilities. China also achieved its first successful reusable rocket landing on 10 July, one day before JAXA’s RV-X test.
・Japan is strengthening its space competitiveness
Reusable launch technology is increasingly important as demand grows for satellites, communications, Earth observation, and other space-based services.

ドイツ式職業訓練を支えるトレーナー・試験官を育成
― AdA（Train-the-Trainer）および試験官研修を実施 ―

AHK Japanでは、企業で訓練生の指導を担うトレーナーを対象に、AdA（Ausbildung der Ausbilder／Train-the-Trainer）研修を実施しました。
参加者はいずれも、現場で豊富な経験を持つプロのメカニックです。研修では、専門技術を伝えるだけでなく、若手人材を効果的に育成するために必要な指導方法、コミュニケーション、フィードバック、評価方法などを学びます。

ベーシックコースには8名が参加し、全員が筆記試験と実技試験に合格しました。これにより、日本国内のDIHK認定ベーシックトレーナーは合計30名となりました。
また、より高度なコーチングスキルを学ぶマスターコースと、実技試験を担う人材を育成するための試験官研修も実施しました。

質の高い訓練と、公正で信頼性の高い評価は、日本におけるドイツ式職業訓練の発展に欠かせません。そして、それを実際の現場で支えてくださるのが、今回研修に参加されたトレーナーと試験官の皆さまです。

研修にご参加いただいた皆さま、ならびに実施にご協力いただいた関係者の皆さまに、心より感謝申し上げます。特に、講師として研修を支えてくださったLisa Abiatarさんに、改めて厚く御礼申し上げます。

AHK Japanは、今後も皆さまと連携しながら、日本におけるD-VETプログラムのさらなる発展に取り組んでまいります。

Strengthening the Trainers and Examiners Behind German-Style Vocational Training
— AdA International (AEVO-Based Train-the-Trainer) and Examiner Training —

AHK Japan recently conducted AdA International, an AEVO-based Train-the-Trainer program, for company trainers responsible for guiding and developing trainees in the workplace.
All participants were experienced professional mechanics. The program helps them go beyond simply passing on technical expertise by developing the instructional, communication, feedback, and assessment skills needed to train young professionals effectively.

Eight participants completed the Basic Course, all of them passed both the written and practical examinations. We now have a total of 30 DIHK-certified Basic Trainers in Japan.
We also conducted an advanced Master Course to further develop participants’ coaching skills, as well as Examiner Training for those who will take responsibility for practical examinations.

High-quality workplace training and fair, reliable assessment are essential to the development of German-style vocational training in Japan. The trainers and examiners who took part in these programs are the people who bring this approach to life in practice.

We sincerely thank all participants and everyone who contributed to the successful implementation of the training. Special thanks go to Lisa Abiatar for her dedication, expertise, and valuable support as our instructor.

AHK Japan will continue working closely with these trainers and examiners to further develop and strengthen the D-VET program in Japan.

🌏 News Monday 59: Toyota Calls for Greater Cooperation Among Japan’s Automakers

Toyota is urging Japan’s automakers to work more closely together as the industry faces rapid technological change and intensifying global competition.

Koji Sato, Toyota’s Vice Chairman and Chief Industry Officer, is calling for greater standardisation in basic technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes. The aim is to reduce duplicated work, strengthen supply chains, and allow companies to focus more resources on areas that differentiate their vehicles.

🌏 Event Review | Young Leaders Forum 2026 Vol. 3

On 23 July, AHK Japan welcomed young professionals to DHL Global Forwarding K.K. for the third Young Leaders Forum session of 2026.

Following opening remarks by Martin Rathmann and Working Group Chairperson Chris Seidel, Karsten Michaelis, President and Representative Director of DHL Global Forwarding Japan K.K., shared insights into the company’s operations in Japan and his international career journey across Asia.

Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, he spoke about embracing opportunities, learning from failure, trusting one’s instincts, working hard, and adapting to local cultures, while staying true to one’s principles.
He concluded with an important reminder: “CEOs are not robots or geniuses, but [human beings] and have the same emotions, worries and fears [as everybody else]”

We sincerely thank Karsten Michaelis for sharing his experiences, as well as Chris Seidel, Martin Rathmann, Hanako Ohzeki, and the DHL Global Forwarding team for making the event possible.

🌏 News Monday 58: Japan’s Chipmakers Push for a Power Semiconductor Alliance

Japan’s semiconductor industry could be heading toward significant consolidation.
Mitsubishi Electric aims to reach an agreement with Toshiba and ROHM by September on integrating their power semiconductor businesses. The proposed joint venture would combine sales, manufacturing, and development to create a stronger Japanese competitor in the global market.

The three companies began formal discussions in March and hope to announce a concrete joint venture plan by September.
