🌏 News Monday 52: Germany Promotes Green Hydrogen Cooperation with Japan 🇩🇪🇯🇵

During his visit to Japan, Germany’s Federal Minister for Transport, Patrick Schnieder, emphasized the strategic importance of green hydrogen for future mobility and energy systems. The visit showcased how Germany and Japan are working together to advance hydrogen technologies, strengthen supply chains, and accelerate the transition to climate-neutral transport and industry.

🔍 Key takeaways:
・BMW and Toyota deepen hydrogen cooperation
The two automotive manufacturers are jointly developing a new generation of fuel-cell technology. BMW plans to launch its first series-produced hydrogen vehicle in 2028, while Toyota will integrate the technology into future fuel-cell models.
・Germany and Japan strengthen their hydrogen partnership
Both countries have been cooperating on hydrogen since launching their Energy Partnership in 2019 and see hydrogen as an important complement to battery-electric technologies.
・Hydrogen imports will play a key role
Germany expects domestic production to fall short of future demand and will need to import significant volumes of green hydrogen. Japan is pursuing similar ambitions and aims to expand its hydrogen capacity to 12 million tons annually by 2040.
・Investment in hydrogen infrastructure continues
Germany recently committed €220 million to support the construction of up to 40 hydrogen refueling stations and the deployment of hundreds of hydrogen-powered trucks.
・German and Japanese companies build international supply chains
Partners including Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Toyota, Daimler Truck, MB Energy, and the Port of Hamburg are working on commercial hydrogen supply chains connecting production, transport, and end users.

💡 Why it matters for business:
Hydrogen is moving from research and pilot projects toward commercial deployment. Companies in mobility, logistics, energy, infrastructure, engineering, and industrial manufacturing can benefit from growing investment in hydrogen production, transport, storage, and vehicle technologies. German-Japanese cooperation is helping to create the international partnerships and supply chains needed to scale the hydrogen economy.

The takeaway:
While challenges around costs and infrastructure remain, Germany and Japan are positioning themselves as key partners in the global hydrogen transition. From BMW and Toyota’s fuel-cell collaboration to new hydrogen import and transport projects, both countries are working to turn hydrogen from a future vision into a commercially viable energy solution.

🌏 News Monday 51: Bosch and Mitsubishi Join Forces to Accelerate Fleet Electrification 🇩🇪🇯🇵

German-Japanese cooperation in electromobility is reaching the market: Bosch MC Battery Service Innovations GmbH, the joint venture founded by Germany’s Bosch and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, has announced its first customer in China for it’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) solution.

🔍 Key takeaways:
・First customer project launched in China
The joint venture’s technology is being used at the “Energy Service Hub” of Shanghai Lingzhou Technology Co. Ltd. in Chizhou, China.
・Battery swapping and charging for electric trucks
At the hub, electric truck batteries can either be exchanged within minutes or recharged, helping to reduce vehicle downtime.
・AI supports battery management
Artificial intelligence is used to optimize and monitor charging processes and battery performance.
・Bosch provides cloud-based battery monitoring
The “Battery in the Cloud” technology analyzes battery health, predicts battery degradation, and supports optimized charging.
・Focus on reducing fleet operating costs
The system helps fleet operators monitor battery condition and better manage battery lifecycle and total cost of ownership.
・China remains a key EV truck market
Nearly 30% of trucks sold in China in 2025 were New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), while Bosch expects more than half of newly registered trucks to be fully electric by 2030.

💡 Why it matters for business:
Battery performance and degradation remain major challenges for commercial fleet operators. Digital monitoring and battery service solutions can help companies improve planning, reduce operational risks, and optimize fleet costs.

The takeaway:
The first customer deployment in China marks an important milestone for the Bosch-Mitsubishi joint venture. The project demonstrates how German technology and Japanese business expertise are being combined to support the growing electrification of commercial vehicle fleets in one of the world’s most dynamic EV markets.
