During our last event from March 18th to 21st, 2026, BGG was given the wonderful opportunity to explore the history, scenery, and community of Saiki City while connecting with friends old and new (Agri ODA Kaihatsu https://www.instagram.com/agri_odakaihatsu/, Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, and おおいた Organic Market ). Like many places across Japan, Saiki is confronted with issues of rural-urban migration and ageing population demographics. Alongside colleagues from Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, we toured the beautiful natural and historical sites hidden away in this small town. These resources offer amazing opportunities for revitalization. Through community meetings, company presentations, and exploring the area alongside local residents, we were able to hear insights from numerous stakeholders and see the many approaches to community revitalization along with the debates and discussions that accompany societal challenges. Many of the problems rural communities face are global in scale, but we look forward to being a part of Saiki's efforts to combat these challenges!

On Sunday, March 8th,2026, BGG was given the amazing opportunity by .ward.studio, artists Xemena Elgueda and Steven Ward, to experience the connection between art and nature on the beautiful island of Himeshima. The Shiroyama quarry has left a lasting mark on the island where a mountain once stood. The "Geo-oasis" event hosted this week by the Elgueda Ward Studio shared ways to connect with nature through several mediums of art, such as music reverberating through the natural amphitheatre of the quarry and images created through sun printing and natural materials. We are very excited to be a part of the musical finale tonight, Tuesday, March 10th, 2026!

Last Monday, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the "Saiki Agricultural Future Creation Program Vol. 1." Invited by Peter James Kang'ara for a day that was much more than just farming.

We started things with a social gathering and lunch, connecting with the visionary teams from @小田開発工業株式会社 https://www.facebook.com/odakai and Sambashi (https://sambashi.co.jp/). It was fascinating to see how these groups are collaborating to bring new energy to Saiki’s agricultural scene.

We took a deep dive into the local landscape to witness how Oda Kaihatsu is physically transforming the land. Seeing their approach to agricultural infrastructure really showed us the potential of what construction expertise can bring to farming.

A major highlight was getting our hands dirty to plant the next generation of kiwi seedlings—a true long-term commitment to the soil of Saiki.

To wrap up, we stayed for a high-level meeting with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture to discuss how these local initiatives serve as a model for regional revitalization nationwide.

Huge thanks to the entire team for letting us witness this firsthand. The future of Saiki looks very bright!

The last Sunday (November 30th) , BGG was privileged with the opportunity to participate in a harvest festival at Ujamaa farm. Over the past year, BGG has joined Morioka-Sensei, his family, APU students, and other farmers and community members from across Oita to plant, harvest, and finally process the rice we planted in the spring. It has been a great honor to be a part of the community and enjoy the delicious traditionally made mochi along with the barbecue and oven-baked pizza prepared by the group. Cooking and mochi making alongside local children and community members was an unforgettable experience, and we can't wait to start again fresh nest planting season!

🎃Halloween Harvest RECAP🎃
Big thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday at Beppu Global Garden!

We had a great afternoon harvesting pumpkins and garden veggies – and then turned them into a warm, delicious pumpkin soup right on the spot!🍲

After the garden cooking, we enjoyed an amazing spread including South African Pap, Sri Lankan Pudding, Cambodian Pumpkin dessert with Soufflé, Banana bread, and Earl grey cheesecake as well as other varieties of snacks that kept everyone full and happy.

We also cleaned and prepared natural loofahs from the garden so everyone could take one home – perfect for sponge or a bath scrub!

No full costume this time, but someone did show up kinda as Wall-E (so we’re counting it?)🤖

It was a beautiful day of autumn sunshine, food, and community. Thak you to everyone who cooked, shared, and joined in.🍁🍂
