Under the patronage and in the presence of Dr. Nidal Al-Aouran, Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, (JREDS) held today a workshop “Community-Based Climate Solutions in Aqaba, As part of the project “Aqaba Coastal Resilience: From Planning to Implementation”, implemented in partnership with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Palestine & Jordan and in cooperation with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority.
The workshop brought together representatives from government and public institutions, the private sector, academia and research institutions, and civil society organizations, in addition to local stakeholders engaged in environmental and climate action in Aqaba.
The workshop forms part of JREDS’ ongoing efforts to strengthen dialogue and coordination among stakeholders working on climate change and environmental protection, while promoting the role of local communities in developing and implementing practical solutions that respond to the climate and environmental challenges facing Aqaba and its coastal areas.
The workshop featured a series of discussions addressing key topics, including climate change in Aqaba, understanding climate risks and local adaptation priorities, community-based climate solutions, the role of communities in environmental monitoring and climate action, and nature-based solutions as a means of strengthening environmental resilience and protecting natural resources.
Participants also shared local experiences and initiatives demonstrating how community-led approaches can contribute to addressing environmental and climate challenges, while discussing opportunities and challenges related to scaling up local initiatives and strengthening collaboration between scientific knowledge, local experience, institutional action, and community engagement.
A key outcome of the workshop will be the development of the “Guide to Community-Based Climate Solutions in Aqaba,” which will document relevant local solutions, practices, and experiences and provide a practical reference for institutions, organizations, and communities seeking to develop and implement locally appropriate climate action.
The guide will be published and made available soon, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and experiences and supporting the development of practical initiatives that strengthen climate resilience and environmental sustainability in Aqaba.
JREDS reaffirms its commitment to fostering cross-sectoral partnerships and meaningful community participation in climate action, contributing to locally driven and sustainable responses to environmental and climate challenges.
