Science Engagement, Mentoring and Empowerment of Young Scientist: Climate Change & Energy challenges

Currently, Climate change is raising the levels of uncertainty about our future. Amid this whole vagueness, one thing is clear; we will leave this world to our children, young people and future generations. Accordingly, young people and young scientists in specific should be encouraged to work towards shaping the future, to get involved and take action.

Nowadays, young people make up the largest proportion of Jordan’s fast growing population. This leaves Jordan with both possibilities and challenges for the future. Accordingly, developing a confidence in the generation of the future is crucial, as they have lived the age of the rapid technological changes and the huge global exposure through internet world.

Young scientists must be mentored to boost the awareness of the global challenges among their generation and younger ones, conserving our nature, creating and implementing environmentally friendly practices in proper communication channels and conducts.

Engaging young scientists and the media is multifaceted particularly when explaining the scientific complexities controversial matter (i.e. climate change) in today’s world of complex, dynamic, and competitive media environment.

In an era of “Alternative Facts”, media awareness and mentoring is becoming more and more crucial. At the same time, young scientists’ engagement is extremely important to facilitate the exchange of information, knowledge, perspectives, and preferences among groups of different expertise and backgrounds. The true power of social media is influenced and can be an avenue to not only to engage with the society, but also influence them with the right content that helps them make a decision.

As we are in the century of fast dynamics with rapidly evolving communication environment and channels, the young scientists should be engaged in discussions about important science related issues (i.e. Climate Change, Energy) to facilitate understanding and perception of science.

Executing Agency of the project: Royal Scientific Society (RSS)

In collaboration with: Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES)

Components

· First part (Awareness raising campaign through social media)

· Second part (university sessions)

Duration: February - September 2018

Objectives:

1. To identify the major challenges and limitations with regards to efficient scientific communication to young scientists (university students) and how to overcome them.

2. To promote mindset of innovation and creativity, in particular in the fields of energy and climate change as a key success factor for increasing young scientists’ active participation in the development process.

3. To Raise awareness on how should young scientists use the media (social media, internet, newspapers, TV, etc.) for public engagement.

4. To Mentor university students to provide a platform for dialogue to interact, share experiences, tackle common issues, and promote solutions for energy with a linkage to climate change.

Target group: University students with climate change and energy related background, currently studying at different Jordanian Universities & environmental clubs in Jordanian Universities.
