في تعليق صحفي حول تداعيات النزاعات المسلحة، أكد الرئيس التنفيذي للمركز الوطني للعدالة البيئية (NCEJ) الدكتور محمد عيادات، أن الحروب تمثل أحد أخطر مصادر التلوث العابر للحدود، لما تسببه من انبعاثات ملوثة وآثار بيئية ممتدة تتجاوز النطاق الجغرافي المباشر لمناطق النزاع، لتطال النظم البيئية الإقليمية والدولية على حد سواء.
وأوضح أن العمليات العسكرية تسهم بشكل كبير في زيادة مستويات التلوث الهوائي من خلال انبعاث الغازات السامة والجسيمات الدقيقة، إضافة إلى تلويث التربة والمياه نتيجة استخدام الأسلحة المختلفة وتدمير البنية التحتية، الأمر الذي يؤدي إلى أضرار طويلة الأمد على التنوع الحيوي وصحة الإنسان، ويزيد من تعقيد جهود التعافي البيئي بعد انتهاء النزاعات.
وأشار إلى أن هذه التأثيرات لا تقتصر على فترة الحرب فقط، بل تمتد لسنوات طويلة، مما يتطلب تعزيز الأطر الدولية والالتزام بالاتفاقيات البيئية ذات الصلة للحد من الآثار البيئية للنزاعات، وضمان المساءلة البيئية، ودعم جهود إعادة التأهيل البيئي في المناطق المتضررة، بما يحقق مبادئ العدالة البيئية والاستدامة.

In a press statement on the environmental impacts of armed conflicts, the CEO of the National Center for Environmental Justice (NCEJ), Dr. Mohammad Eyadat, emphasized that wars represent one of the most dangerous sources of transboundary pollution, due to the emissions and environmental consequences that extend beyond conflict zones to affect regional and global ecosystems.
He explained that military operations significantly contribute to air pollution through toxic emissions and fine particulate matter, in addition to contaminating soil and water as a result of weapon use and infrastructure destruction. These impacts pose long-term risks to biodiversity and human health, and further complicate environmental recovery efforts in post-conflict settings.
He further noted that such environmental consequences persist long after conflicts end, underscoring the need to strengthen international frameworks and adherence to relevant environmental agreements. This would help mitigate the environmental impacts of conflicts, ensure environmental accountability, and support ecological restoration efforts in affected areas, in line with the principles of environmental justice and sustainability.
