Arab Women's Enterprise Fund - Jordan

Arab Women's Enterprise Fund - Jordan Funded by the U.K. Department for International Development and the Islamic Development Bank and working in Jordan, Egypt, and Palestine.

The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and Islamic Development Bank (IDB) are providing £10 million each for the Arab Women’s Enterprise Fund (AWEF) to address barriers to women’s economic inclusion in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. From 2015-20, the programme will work in targeted countries - Egypt, Jordan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (the OPTs). AWE

F aims to increase economic opportunities and well-being for 150,000 poor women in the region. AWEF will address the barriers and challenges that poor women face in markets enabling women to work, start and grow their businesses, and to increase their voice, choice and control of economic activities. Ultimately, AWEF will tap into one of the MENA region’s most underutilized resources - women - to stimulate increased economic growth and stability in a region that currently has the lowest rates of female economic participation in the world. In an innovative model, AWEF will build women’s economic empowerment through a market systems approach. This approach is based upon understanding the barriers facing women in targeted markets and working with key stakeholders, including businesses, government, service providers, and women, to make markets work for poor women.
