Her Royal Highness Princess Sarvath El Hassan took over the Presidency of The Young Muslim Women's Association, a non-profit, voluntary organisation, in 1972. Since then, the following projects have been initiated under the aegis of the YWMA:
The Bunayat Centre for Special Education in 1974, the Princess Sarvath Community College in 1980, A Sheltered Workshop in 1987, and the National Centre
for Learning Difficulties in 1995. The Bunayat Centre for Special Education aims to provide children and young adults with mild to moderate learning difficulties, from birth till 25 years of age, with the education, training and rehabilitation needed to help them attain their maximum potential and to gain some measure of independence. We also provide the students' families with support and advice, both moral and material, as most of them are in great need. The Centre has four main sections:
1 - Early Intervention Section
2 - Pre-School Section
3 - School Section
4 - The Vocational Rehabilitation Section:
- ceramic
- woodwork
- mosaics
- weaving
- horticulture
- culinary and housekeeping skills
The Centre has developed into a well regarded institution, nationally and internationally. It has over many years run specialist workshops and provided support, advice and guidance to similar institutions in Jordan and in the region. The Bunayat Centre is grateful to all our volunteers and supporters over the years who have enabled us to assist several hundred mentally challenged young people to live a dignified and productive life.
