Who is funding climate action in the Arab region — and how?

Until now, there has been no clear answer.

Tomorrow, we launch the MENA Climate Philanthropy Ecosystem Pre-Mapping, the first attempt to map the region's climate philanthropy landscape, drawing on insights from 19 philanthropy organizations, funders, and implementing partners across Egypt, Jordan, KSA, Morocco, Palestine, and the UAE.

Inside: who the funders are, what they're prioritizing, where the gaps are, and what it will take to build a connected, well-resourced climate philanthropy ecosystem for one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in the world.
Produced in partnership with WINGS.

Launching tomorrow at the Green Finance Summit, co-hosted with -Dahab, GAPP Executive Education, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), and EU Jeel Connect

Happy Easter and Sham el-Nessim to all those celebrating across the Arab region.

Sham el-Nessim has been celebrated for over 4,500 years, making it one of the oldest holidays in the world. Originally a Pharaonic spring festival marking the start of a new season, it has been observed continuously across generations, faiths, and communities. Today it remains a day that brings people together regardless of background.

Spring has always been a reminder that renewal is possible, even in the most difficult seasons. Wishing our members, partners, and communities warmth and peace.

The war in Lebanon is not slowing down. Wednesday saw the heaviest strikes since the conflict began, with over 300 killed in a single day. More than 1.2 million people are displaced. AFF members in Lebanon are working overtime, activating appeals and emergency responses to support their communities now more than ever.

The Doria Feminist Fund has activated emergency grants for feminist organizations in Lebanon providing shelter, cash assistance, psychosocial support, and essential supplies to displaced communities, with focused attention on women, LGBTQI+ persons, migrant workers, refugees, and persons with disabilities. DFF will support current and former grantee partners with emergency response grants to ensure resources are rapidly disbursed to the communities in need. To support their emergency grants: https://lnkd.in/dEXdeUuE

AUBMC - American University of Beirut Medical Center has treated 481 victims since March 1, including 150 children, and has issued urgent appeals for blood donations as supplies run critically low. "We will rise to this moment, as we always have." — American University of Beirut (AUB) President Fadlo R. Khuri. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/dNeCs-bu

We at AFF will continue to highlight our members who are on the ground across Lebanon, activating emergency responses to support their communities while navigating the crisis themselves. Times like these call for unified support to help respond to urgent needs in a region facing a compounded polycrisis. We stand with Lebanon, with our members, and with the communities they serve.

On , we're sharing an excerpt from Lubna Ahmad Abu Dahrouj's "Come Live with Me, and Be My War Companion."

Lubna is one of 190 Palestinian writers and artists who submitted work to Voices of Palestine, a Rapid Response book by AFF and the International Human Rights Art Movement celebrating Palestinian creatives from Gaza, the West Bank, and the diaspora. 100 of those submissions came from Gaza alone.

As we head to publication this spring, we want to make sure every contributor is paid what their work deserves. For every $50 raised, we can double the contributor stipend. These writers and artists chose to create and share under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, and they deserve to be compensated properly for it.

In a region where 676 million women and girls live within 50km of active conflict, and where conflict-related sexual violence rose 87% between 2022 and 2024, feminist organizing is not optional. It is essential.

This , and as part of our annual Ramadan calendar, the Arab Foundations Forum spotlights our member Doria Feminist Fund and their newly released Psychosocial Support Manual, shaped by the lived experiences of feminist activists across MENA who hold survivor support, strategic campaigning, and community pressure all at once. It is a framework for care, resistance, and collective sustainability.

Supporting work like this is at the heart of what Arab philanthropy must do.

"Communities hard hit by conflict and climate disaster are grappling with urgent shortages of food, water, and basic shelter and warmth as hope for the future withers."

- Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, Mercy Corps CEO

As we move through the second week of Ramadan, AFF is proud to spotlight the work of our member Mercy Corps, who have just launched their 2025 Annual Impact Report.

In 2025, Mercy Corps reached 37 million people across 35 countries. In Gaza, they partnered to deliver clean water to families displaced by more than two years of conflict and blockade. In Sudan, they delivered cash assistance and helped families access shelter, food and other essentials amid one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. In Syria, after more than a decade of civil war, they helped farmers rebuild through digital cash transfers. And across it all, 86% of their funding went directly to the communities who needed it most.

All of this while global foreign aid was cut by 40%.

The need is growing. The resources are shrinking. And the communities bearing the cost are our communities.

This Ramadan, we are reminded that generosity is not passive. What we all do now will shape what happens next.

Today we highlight the work of AFF member Greenpeace غرينبيس and their Green Iftar Guidelines — a practical resource for communities looking to reduce the environmental footprint of Ramadan gatherings.

The guide covers key areas including local and seasonal food sourcing, plant-forward menus, elimination of single-use plastics, food waste reduction, water conservation, and community engagement. It also draws on case studies from Jordan, Egypt, Canada, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, showing how these practices translate across different community contexts and scales.

At its core, the guide makes the case that sustainable Iftar practices are not a niche concern, but that they represent a meaningful opportunity for collective climate action during one of the most communal months of the year.

This Ramadan, Jusoor is launching a crowdfunding campaign to keep orphaned students in Syria in school, starting in Aleppo.

Too many young people in Syria face an impossible choice: stay in school or drop out to support their families. No child should have to make that decision.
Building on years of success with their high school scholarship program for Syrian students in Lebanon, Jusoor is now bringing that same model home. They're providing orphaned students inside Syria with the comprehensive support they need to complete their high school education.

Education isn't just about one student. It's a pathway to long-term social mobility and the rebuilding of an entire country. This Ramadan, your generosity can keep a student in the classroom.

This Ramadan, our member SOS Children’s Villages International - Gulf Area Office is raising funds to support vulnerable children across Somalia, Ethiopia, Jordan, Pakistan, and Nigeria.

As one of the world's largest non-governmental social development organizations, SOS Children's Villages works across more than 130 countries and territories to provide holistic support including care, education, and healthcare to children who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care. Their vision is simple but powerful: every child should belong to a family and grow with love, respect, and security.

This Ramadan, SOS Children's Villages has launched five campaigns on YallaGive, each focused on reaching vulnerable children in one of these countries. Your support helps provide the care, stability, and opportunity that every child deserves.
