Founded in 2008 in Amman-Jordan, Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) is a Civil Society Organization that aims to contribute to forming a new renaissance project in the Arab world, grounded in the fundamental issues concerning Arab affairs, within their local, and regional and international contexts, with independence, authenticity, and decolonization, aiming to realize the aspirations and endeavors of all people living in it, towards democracy, development, and social justice, participating in the Arab reform, modernization, and development agendas, and influencing public policies that shape transformations in the Arab world and its surroundings through a set of development programs, scientific research projects, and applied solutions.

ARDD’s Strategic Approach to Sustainable Livelihoods and Economic Well-Being

عقدت النهضة العربية للديمقراطية والتنمية (أرض)، في 28 أيلول/سبتمبر 2026، ورشة عمل داخلية بعنوان «نهج النهضة الاستراتيجي لتعزيز سبل العيش المستدامة والرفاه الاقتصادي: فهم سبل العيش في سياق العمل الإنساني والتنموي»، بمشاركة فرق البرامج والعمل القانوني والعمليات والبحث، بما فيها مركز النهضة الاستراتيجي، بهدف تعزيز نهج مؤسسي متكامل يربط بين برامج سبل العيش، وإنتاج المعرفة والأدلة، والمشاركة في السياسات العامة.

On 28 September 2026, the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) convened an internal workshop on “ARDD’s Strategic Approach to Sustainable Livelihoods and Economic Well-being: Understanding Livelihoods in Humanitarian & Development Work.” The workshop brought together ARDD’s programmatic, legal, operational, and research teams, including the Renaissance Strategic Center (RSC), to strengthen an integrated approach linking livelihoods programming, evidence, and policy engagement.

Jordan’s Maritime Moment: The Race to Replace Hormuz

يمرّ يوم الملاحة البحرية العالمي كل عام من دون أن يحظى باهتمام واسع خارج قطاع الشحن، في مفارقة لافتة؛ إذ تمثل التجارة البحرية بنية تحتية غير مرئية تنقل الغالبية العظمى من السلع التي يستهلكها العالم. غير أن عام 2026 جعل من الصعب تجاهل هذه البنية. فعندما دخلت الولايات المتحدة في حرب مع إيران في شباط- فبراير، امتد الرد الإيراني إلى مضيق هرمز، أحد أهم الممرات الحيوية للطاقة في العالم. وتراجع عدد السفن التي تعبر المضيق يومياً من نحو 130 سفينة إلى ما لا يزيد على ثماني سفن في بعض الفترات، فيما ارتفعت أسعار النفط بنسبة 65% خلال أسابيع.

بالنسبة إلى معظم دول العالم، انعكس ذلك في ارتفاع أسعار الوقود. أما بالنسبة إلى الشرق الأوسط، فكان الأمر أقرب إلى أزمة اقتصادية واسعة، بينما حمل لدولة واحدة فرصة غير مخطط لها. فقد استوعب ميناء العقبة الأردني على البحر الأحمر زيادة كبيرة في حركة الشحن التي كانت تمر سابقاً عبر هرمز، وباتت الأرقام تطرح سؤالاً مهماً: هل يجد الأردن نفسه أمام فرصة لإعادة تشكيل اقتصاده وموقعه السياسي في المنطقة، أم أنه يستفيد من مكاسب ظرفية فرضتها الحرب قد يصعب الحفاظ عليها؟

Every year, World Maritime Day passes by largely unnoticed outside the shipping industry, a fitting irony, since maritime trade is the invisible infrastructure that moves the vast majority of goods that the world consumes. In 2026, this infrastructure became impossible to ignore. When the US went to war with Iran in February, Iran’s retaliation reached the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints. Daily ship crossings collapsed from roughly 130 to as few as eight, causing oil prices to spike by 65% within weeks.

For most of the world, that meant higher prices at the pump. For the Middle East, it meant something closer to an economic disaster, and for one country, an unplanned opportunity. Jordan’s Red Sea port of Aqaba has absorbed a surge of cargo once bound for Hormuz, and the numbers are compelling enough to question whether Jordan is being handed an opportunity to reshape its economy and political position in the region, or has merely received a wartime windfall it cannot hold onto.

That is why this moment matters, and should matter to those who care how war reshapes trade, livelihoods and power far from the frontlines.
