Gentlemen, this is a fantastic opportunity to participate in the latest exciting event hosted by our Morehouse Miami brother, Candle in the Dark Honoree, retired chair of FIU's Psychology department and renowned historian specializing in Black Florida history and culture, Dr Marvin Dunn who is also the founder and president of the Miami Center for Racial Justice - known for organizing the “Teach the Truth” tours, which highlight Florida’s history of racial violence.
The purpose of this trip is to host historian Dr. Dunn for a lecture on institutional racism at Florida A&M University (FAMU). The event is a collaborative effort involving alumni and students from both FAMU and Morehouse College. Each alumni group is asked to recruit 20 participants, along with three back-ups. To confirm participation, a $100 deposit per person is required; this amount will be donated to the Center and later returned to the participants.
The itinerary begins on Sunday, June 8, 2025, with a 7:30 AM departure from Barry University. The group will first travel to Rosewood, Florida, the site of the 1923 destruction of an all-Black town by a white mob. The journey continues to Live Oak, where 15-year-old Willie James Howard was lynched in 1944. Participants will spend the night in Live Oak at the Tru Hilton in Lake City, FL (double rooms included, single rooms available at an additional cost).
On Monday, June 9, the group will depart at 8:00 AM for the FAMU campus. From 12:00 to 2:00 PM, a FAMU expert will deliver a lecture under a designated campus tree, followed by a second lecture from Dr. Raymond Dunn on FAMU’s civil rights protest movement. Chairs will be provided for all attendees, and transportation will be arranged through Florida Tours.
Participants are expected to arrive at Barry University by 7:00 AM for check-in before departure. Alumni associations are responsible for preparing lunch for the bus ride. All trip expenses, excluding food, will be covered by the Center.
