BirdLife Jamaica is calling on the NRCA to maintain the Closed Season for bird shooting until scientific data show that game bird populations have recovered to levels that can sustain hunting.

Following the severe impacts of Hurricane Melissa on Jamaica’s forests, bird habitats, and bird populations, we believe that decisions on reopening the bird shooting season must be guided by transparent, publicly available scientific assessments and a precautionary approach.

Jamaica’s game birds are a national resource and play an important ecological role, especially in forest recovery through seed dispersal.

BirdLife Jamaica supports dialogue among conservationists, hunters, regulatory bodies, and the wider public, but believes that any decision on bird shooting must place the recovery of birds and their habitats first.

💰 $700 members | $1,000 non-members

We’ll be looking out for coastal species like the Bahama Mockingbird, which has a very restricted range in Jamaica.

🧢 Hellshire is HOT — bring a hat, sunscreen & water.
🚗 Parking is limited, so please plan to carpool.
🏖️ Beach access at the end (optional swimming at your own risk).

Each participant gets a bird checklist & cactus ID card. Beginners welcome! Please register early, we have limited spaces!
