Children, parents, educators, community leaders and residents gathered at the Grants Pen Peace Park in Kingston recently for a family fun day aimed at strengthening peace, promoting healthy lifestyles and fostering greater community engagement.

The event, organised by the Violence Prevention Alliance (VPA) in collaboration with the Grants Pen Community Policing Management Committee, featured football competitions involving five basic schools, an arts and crafts corner for children, and a health station that provided information and services to families. Big Man Ting in schools

Another important lesson from our boys is that many are carrying their struggles silently. Too often, they feel pressure to “be tough” instead of expressing emotion, asking questions or seeking support.

Through the Big Man Ting! sessions, facilitators are also seeing the importance of real and honest conversations around consent, relationships, accountability and the long-term impact of violence.

Creating safe spaces for young men to reflect, learn and speak openly remains critical to raising positive boys into men.

Big Man Ting in schools

One of the strongest messages from our boys is simple: “We need men to talk to.”

But in many spaces, that presence is missing or inconsistent. What they are really asking for is positive guidance, a listening ear, and fairness as they figure out who they are becoming.

This is what the Big Man Ting facilitators are learning inside the classroom.

“Let the youth express himself in his own language.”

Powerful advice from Patrick, one of our Big Man Ting facilitators, that guidance starts with listening, understanding and creating space for honest, judgement-free conversations with our young men/boys.

With his decades of experience working with young people across communities and facilitating our Big Man Ting workshops in schools over this past year, he reminds us why those factors, along with compassion are critical in helping boys grow into positive men.

Since 2025, VPA has engaged young men in schools through our Big Man Ting workshops on positive masculinity. This Child Month, our facilitators share lessons from these conversations as we work together to raise positive and responsible young men. Watch this space.

Today, we turn the spotlight on the power of reading to inspire, educate, and transform lives. Across the island, students, teachers, parents, and volunteers are coming together to share stories, spark imagination, and build a stronger culture of literacy.

From classrooms to community spaces, every book opened is a step toward brighter opportunities and limitless possibilities.

Let’s continue to encourage our young people to read, dream, and achieve—because readers today are leaders tomorrow.
