On Thursday, March 12, the reggae community gathered at the Alpha Institute of Music (formerly Alpha Boys’ School) to celebrate what would have been the 92nd birthday of the legendary Don Drummond.
Led by JaRIA Vice Chairman Stingwray, several of Jamaica’s outstanding trombonists Everald Gayle, Romeo Gray, and Everton Pessoa came together to honour Drummond’s legacy. Each musician performed one of Drummond’s original compositions or solos and shared with the students how his music influenced their own journey.
JaRIA Chairman Ewan Simpson was also present and brought an inspirational message to the students of the Alpha Academy, encouraging the young musicians to see themselves not only as performers, but as ministers of healing artists whose music has the power to uplift communities, restore spirit, and carry forward Jamaica’s cultural mission.
Drummond, a founding member of The Skatalites, stands among the earliest Jamaican musicians to gain international recognition paving the way for global icons such as Millie Small, Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and Dennis Brown.
In the same spirit that we celebrated Reggae Month in February, honouring Marley, D Brown and more, it was fitting to also pause and recognize one of the pioneers whose musicianship helped shape the sound of independent Jamaica.
These celebrations and collaborations, bringing legendary music, working musicians, and young students together, are exactly what JaRIA is all about.
Salute to the original Don of all Dons.
There is only one Don Drummond. 🎺🇯🇲
