Debbie James, an author and educator and the only Jamaican living in the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, will be boarding a flight home today with bittersweet emotions. Moved by the destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa late last year, James, who is originally from Morant Bay, St Thomas - and who is also the chairperson of the Mediatrust, which oversees both radio and television in the Falkland Islands - managed to raise the equivalent of J$2 million there to aid one local family that lost their home in the storm.

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2026 has UK universities offering eligible graduate courses through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK to applicants from eligible Commonwealth Countries, including Jamaica.

Courses span 6 development related themes, with programmes including MA, MSc, MPA, MPhil, MRes, MSt... from top universities, including St Andrews, Bath, Cambridge, East Anglia, Edinburgh Lancaster, and Oxford. Most of the courses are full-time in the UK, but a few are 100% online (distance learning with the same valid accreditation as f2f attendance. (Distance learning available at St Andrews, UCL, University of Edinburgh, etc.)

The absolute deadline to apply for the scholarships is May 20th, and the application is a bit long, so interested persons should start early and apply...
