With an establishment of three (3) platoons and a corps of drums, a total of one hundred and twelve (112) cadet other ranks, the unit have been able to maintain a determination and enthusiasm in executing planned activities that depicts the forces’ motto, “TO UNITE, TO SERVE, TO LEAD”. Besides the core functions and programmes, (camping, drills, map reading, fieldcraft, expedition and exploration)
the members of the unit are constantly engaged in community service projects and other civic duties which continues to instill in them, civic pride and respect for humanity. The unit have earned the coveted RUEL VAZ TROPHY, awarded to the champion unit in the island, fourteen (14) times. The years are as follows:
1981, 1984, 1985, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010. Between 1995 and 2003 this unit had the largest number of participants to be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. In 2006, three members were a part of the JCCF National shooting team that competed against the rest of the Caribbean in the P J Patterson shooting competition. The team won the competition and one the three members of this unit was placed second in the Caribbean based on the individual scores and was awarded a marksmanship badge. All three members were awarded the commandants commendation medal. In 2008 eight members of the unit comprised a team that represented Third battalion at the JCCF national shooting competition. The team was placed second with one member winning first place and another third in the island based on individual scores. Again members of the team were awarded marksmanship and 1st class shooting badges. The Preparedness and Emergency Response Corps (PERC) Project, launched on May 28, 2009 by the Hon. Orette Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica on the grounds of this noble institution (St. Mary High School), have seen more than 60% of the members of this unit, trained in areas such as; Disaster Management, Shelter Management, Initial Damage Assessment, Light Search and Rescue, Telecommunication and First Aid. This unit continues to boast as a single unit the most star 3 and 4 qualified cadets in the island a number of which have topped the courses or have been placed second or third. Amidst all the activities the members of the unit continues to perform well academically. The Unit wishes to place on record its sincere gratitude to all who have helped in various capacities over the years to achieve the success that it has enjoyed. As it continues to strive for excellence, all youth are encouraged to unite, to serve and to lead with strength and humility.
