🌳 The Great Big Green Week 2026🌳Volunteering 8-14 June🌳

Next week is peak volunteering as it's The Great Big Green Week 2026 - and you're invited to join us.

The island tour starts on Monday at Egypte Woods before heading to the Alder Collection, Val de la Mare and Les Varines, wrapping up at Le Mourier on Sunday 14 June.

Vol@Val is also on this Friday but as the top car park at Val is under maintenance for two weeks, we'll park and meet in the car park at the bottom of the reservoir and dam. The same goes for Green Thursday on 11 June.

A reminder that we're putting on five volunteer events around the island between 8 and 14 June for The Great Big Green Week, a national celebration of climate action across communities 🌳

The week will take in Trinity, St Brelade, St Peter, St Saviour and St Mary, so there's plenty of choice if proximity's your thing.

Activity-wise it'll be all about managing woodland and hedgerow. Bring your gloves and make sure you've got your sunscreen, if the last few days have been anything to go by.

Full details and free tickets are available on our Eventbrite:

Thanks to everyone who's signed up so far. There's room for plenty more!

On Thursday we were at La Moye Woodland (and the adjacent piece of Railway Walk) with Greening Jersey and its trademark hefty group of enthusiastic volunteers.

It was a glorious morning as we got stuck into some typical woodland management activities - clearing around trees, managing invasive plants and of course watering. Simple stuff but it's so important.

The whole area's looking a world away from the bramble-covered sycamore fest of less than 18 months ago. It's been a superb effort, so thank you once again to all involved in this great initiative 🌳💚

🌳The Great Big Green Week 2026🌳 6-14 June🌳

The Great Big Green Week is an annual national campaign to promote community action against climate change and to protect nature.

To celebrate, we're hosting five volunteer events between Monday 8 and Sunday 14 June. They'll all be at different locations, starting at Egypte Woods and wrapping up at Le Mourier. All are welcome.

If you'd like to be part of the action, you can find out more and pick up free tickets through our Eventbrite:

We're also encouraging schools to participate with their own activities. If you're interested, we'll be happy to talk to you about it - so feel free to get in touch.

Have a great long weekend! 🌞

The Alder Collection was our destination today as we were joined in St Brelade by six of our friends from Le Gallais & Luce LLP .

Much like Val de la Mare, the Alder Collection is an arboretum - or alnetum, from its Latin genus, 'Alnus'. Full of fine specimens, it was recognised by Plant Heritage as a National Plant Collection in 2023.

Our mission today was twofold: improve the state of the footpath and get rid of the aggressively proliferating rhododendron that we're super-keen to keep offsite.

It was a pleasure to discover, therefore, that the LGL crew were as keen as we were to vanquish this notorious interloper. They were pretty handy with their path work too, as shown in the snaps.

All in all, a satisfying and enjoyable slice of progress in a lovely place with a great group. Happy days.

Thanks to all at Le Gallais & Luce. We look forward to the next time 🌳💚

We ended another cracking week of progress at Val de la Mare, where we've been a lot this week. Accompanying us this morning was a team from B-FLEXION, continued supporters of Jersey Trees for Life.

As on Wednesday, we were in the fledgling Ericaceous Collection, near the top end of the Oak Collection. The volunteers impressed, doing a great job as they crystallised their latent path-building skills.

Big thanks to all involved. B-FLEXION has sure been flexin' today🌳💚

Two teams from volunteering regulars Ogier joined us yesterday at Val de la Mare for a day of work on the arboretum, tag teaming midway.

True to form, both put in a good shift as we watered young trees and cleared space for a new collection of Ericaceae, a family that includes the likes of blueberry, rhododendron and a lot of heathers.

Big thanks to all at Ogier for a great day's work and even more so for the continued support in recent years 🌳💚

The Great Big Green Week is a national celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. This year's runs from Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 June.

We've taken part for the last couple of years and for 2026 we're going to host five volunteer events at five different sites:

🌳 Mon 8 Jun @ Egypte Woods (in partnership with Greening Jersey)
🌳 Tue 9 Jun @ Alder Collection
🌳 Thu 11 Jun @ Val de la Mare (park dam side)
🌳 Fri 12 Jun @ Les Varines (St Saviour)
🌳 Sun 14 Jun @ Le Mourier

All events involve some form of woodland management - clearing, watering, mulching, dead hedging and the like.

You can find full event details and get free tickets through our Eventbrite. The link is also available via the QR in the image.

It's always positive to bring community together over a shared cause and it's a lot of fun too. We've already had a lot of sign-ups before any advertising, which has to be a good sign.

We look forward to seeing many of you over the course of the week 🌳

Last Sunday marked the start of National Hedgerow Week 2026.

As well as planting and taking care of hedgerow, we talk about it a lot - and with very good reason. It's a real countryside hero, providing a stack of tangible benefits:

🌳 Wildlife habitat and increased biodiversity
🌳 Water retention and flood mitigation
🌳 Shelter from wind for crops and livestock
🌳 Reduced soil erosion and run-off

Let's not forget that hedges are trees too. By recognising this, we can better appreciate their value and protect these vital green habitat corridors for generations to come.

A big thank you to everyone who's helped us to plant and look after hedgerow. Your work makes a difference 💚

With another month having flown by, we were back at Val de la Mare this morning with a big ol' group of 18 for our monthly Vol@Val.

On a far finer day than we'd expected, we cracked on with watering and clearing around new trees in the fledgling Fruit & Nut Collection, as we're now referring to it.

As we see more warmer, drier spring weather, it becomes similarly important to stay on top of the watering. Thirsty things, them trees.

Thanks as always to our ace volunteer crew. We couldn't do what we do without you 🌳💚

Have a great weekend!
