If you've ever wanted a guided tour of the gem that is Val de la Mare Arboretum, here's your opportunity 🌳🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏽🚶🏼‍♂️🌳

Jersey Trees for Life members are invited to join us at Val on Sunday 8 November to Amble the Arb.

Starting in the Australasian Collection, we'll head through the North American, Japanese, Himalayan, Walnut and Chinese Collections while talking about some of their rare and endangered species.

The event is free to attend and members are welcome to bring guests.

The Eventbrite link is in this month's Member Update which went out yesterday.

We have no idea how popular this is (or isn't) going to be, as it's a first. If it's popular, you can be sure we'll do it again...

This month's Sunday Session took place at Val de la Mare yesterday morning with five volunteers, two of us and a bag of tools.

The plan was to cut ivy from redwoods - to show off their bark - and clear around them. We also wanted to remove some of the rogue sycamores that proliferate so easily.

After a couple of hours of shearing, clipping and lopping in and around the North American Collection, our work was done and the redwoods were happy. The sycamores less so.

Next month there's no Sunday Session as we're hosting a guided tour of Val de la Mare Arboretum for our members instead. The event link is in this month's member update and we'll post separately.

Sunday Session volunteering returns from December. From January it'll move from the second Sunday monthly to the third. This is simply to better space out our events.

Vol@Val will take place as normal on Friday 6 November.

Adelina Woods was this morning's destination as we were joined by a team of our volunteers for Flower Hours - a session of bulb planting.

Together we planted bluebell, crocus and daffodil bulbs in numbers around several of the trees, which we first mulched.

We've planted thousands of bulbs over the last few weeks at Adelina and Val de la Mare. That means there'll be more pollen and nectar for wildlife from late winter, while pleasing the eye with bursts of colour 🌷

Next up we'll be at Val de la Mare for Sunday Session this weekend. Rogue sycamores will be in our sights, along with ivy on redwoods. Further info and free tickets are available on our Events webpage:

On Monday the JEP's Countryside Series included the eighth tree in our monthly feature on notable local trees.

This time we looked at the critically endangered white ash (Fraxinus americana) in the picnic area at Val de la Mare, preceded with some info about the history and origins of the arboretum.

We have a couple of volunteering opps coming up this week for anyone interested in getting outside and spending time with nature.

This Friday (9 Oct) we'll be Adelina Woods in St Helier for Flower Hours, planting the likes of bluebells and snowdrops that'll bathe the area in colour over late winter and early spring.

Two days later on Sunday (11 Oct) we're heading to Val de la Mare for Sunday Session, when we'll be removing invasive sycamore growth and cutting ivy from our dawn redwoods so that the beauty of their bark can be appreciated.

We have nicely-sized groups for both events but there's room for a few more if you're feeling the urge.

A big thank you to all involved in Autumn Adventure, our kids' activity day that took place on Saturday at St Saviour's Woodland.

Once again it was a great success and there were some brilliant outfits too - as you can see 💚

If you're up for volunteering this month we have two events coming up in the next nine days that might be of interest.

This Friday (9 Oct) we'll be Adelina Woods for Flower Hours where we'll be planting flower bulbs that'll provide vivid late winter and spring colour while feeding pollinators.

Two days later (11 Oct) we'll be at Val de la Mare for Sunday Session, where the activity will be removing invasive sycamore growth and removing ivy from our dawn redwoods.

Today's the first Friday of the month, which means we headed to Val de la Mare for our regular 'Vol@Val' open volunteer mornings.

Having a group of around 20 volunteers means we can get a lot done - especially when they're on form - and that's exactly what transpired as they:

🌳 Planted ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba) in the new ginkgo forest
🌳Built a new dead hedge from coppiced willow
🌳Removed piles of agricultural plastic

The ginkgo forest will form part of a new 'evolutionary trail' that takes visitors through time in the context of tree evolution.

If you're wondering why we're planting at the start of October, it's because these were potted trees that can be planted at minimal risk to their survival chances.

The key is whether or not a tree is bare-root and dormant. For example these ginkgo weren't dormant but had potted root balls, preventing bare roots from exposure. Similarly, when we plant whips. they have bare roots but are dormant.

Vol@Val returns next month on Friday 6 November. Meanwhile feel free to join us at Adelina Woods next Friday 9 October for some bulb planting or next Sunday 11 October for Sunday Session, which will be at Val de la Mare.

🌳Volunteers🌳

We could use one or two more volunteers for Autumn Adventure at St Saviour's Woodland this Saturday, for either or both 90-min sessions.

It'll be nothing hectic - probably pointing directions in hi-viz, helping with the teas or something like that.

On Saturday morning we made it a fantastic four volunteer sessions in a week as the 6th Jersey St Mary Scouts joined us at Adelina Woods.

The plan was two-pronged, the first being to plant bluebell and crocus bulbs that'll provide sustenance for pollinators and vibrant colour for visitors to enjoy.

We planted around ten trees: four silver birches, two black alders, two oaks (a sessile and an English), a wild cherry and a common pear.

The other part of the plan was to collect organic matter and 'renovate' the bug hotel with it. Tick! 🪲

Big thanks to 6th St Mary for their excellent efforts. Now there's all the more reason to return this spring too 🌳🌷💚
