Barnardo's Jersey

Barnardo's Jersey Barnardo's Jersey works with children and young people so they have safer childhoods, stronger famil Who is the service for?

The Barnardo’s Advocacy service is for children
and young people aged 5 – 18-years-old who:
• Have a Child Protection Plan or have an Initial
Child Protection Review meeting planned.
• Have a Child in Need Plan or professionals are
looking to create an initial Child in Need Plan. As well as supporting children and young people to
have a meaningful voice and influence in meetings
and when decision

s are being made about their
lives, the Barnardo’s Advocacy Service can support
children and young people when they want to make
a complaint. We are also able to provide Non-Instructed
Advocacy to disabled children and young people. For Advocacy for children and young people
under the age of 5-years-old or over the age
of 18-years-old with additional needs, please
contact the service to discuss. Accessing our service
Referrals can be made by the allocated Social
Worker or another professional responsible for
the child’s plan. We are not able to receive self
referrals, Barnardo’s Advocacy will accept referrals for children who meet the criteria. A Barnardo’s Advocacy Worker ensures that
children and young people understand their rights
and are able to make an informed decision about the
choices that are available to them. The Advocacy
Worker will not seek to influence the views of a child
or young person but will enable them to share their
views in a way they chose to. An Advocacy Worker will liaise with the child or
young person and their parents / carers directly to
arrange meeting with them. The Advocacy Worker
might also speak to the child or young person’s Social
Worker. The Advocacy Worker will then represent
these views at the meeting and can also support
the child or young person to attend. YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY and EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR ON THIS PAGE: You will take responsibility for postings under your identity and provide information at your own risk. Heatwave Safety Advice for Islanders

Temperatures are expected to be high this week. It’s not forecast to reach the record temperatures we saw recently, but it will still be hot. During this heatwave, please take extra care and look out for those who may be more vulnerable — especially elderly neighbours, friends, and relatives.

To beat the heat, follow these simple steps:

- Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and when UV levels are highest
- Take cool baths or showers
- Drink plenty of water; avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Keep your home cool: close curtains, use fans and open windows when the outside temperature is cooler than the indoor temperature
- Wear light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
- Apply sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) before going outside and reapply regularly
- If you're having a barbeque, ensure all food is thoroughly cooked
- Look out for others
- Babies are very sensitive to heat. See the Lullaby Trust at: https://bit.ly/4vcOx1K for advice on safe sleeping and travel for your baby.

Fire Safety Reminders

- Use barbecues responsibly – don’t use them on balconies
- Do not light bonfires - there is an increased risk of land fires
- Dispose of glass carefully - it can start fires in dry conditions

Beach and Sea Safety

- Always check tide times before swimming
- Be aware of currents and swell
- Choose beaches with RNLI lifeguard patrols where possible

💚Mental Health Awareness Week💚Mental health is all about how we are feeling, the thoughts we are having and how we cope when we face challenges. We can all have times when we are struggling.
If children are feeling anxious, worried, frightened or stressed, it is important to help them manage these feelings. You can:
ensure they are getting enough sleep;
have time to talk about how they are feeling;
encourage them to have time each day when they are calm and quiet;
ensure they spend time each day being creative;
encourage them to be physically active and eat nutritiously;
spend time together outside;
get help and advice from a trained professional.
Our Barnardos Advocates have some lovely colouring resources that we share with our children and young people learning simple ways to manage stress and boost their mental well-being
💚Feel free to use these 💚

The Barnardo’s Jersey Advocacy Team hosted a brilliant participation event at Jump Jersey, where the children we support had the chance to play, bounce, and have fun alongside their advocates.
It was wonderful to see everyone laughing, building connections, and enjoying time together in a relaxed and energetic environment away from more formal settings.
Moments like these help ensure every child feels heard, valued, and supported 💚
A big thank you to our amazing team and to the children for bringing so much joy to the day! Also a huge thank you to The Bosdet Foundation for making all this happen🥰
