Barnardo's Jersey

Barnardo's Jersey Barnardo's Jersey works with children and young people so they have safer childhoods, stronger famil Who is the service for?

The Barnardo’s Advocacy service is for children
and young people aged 5 – 18-years-old who:
• Have a Child Protection Plan or have an Initial
Child Protection Review meeting planned.
• Have a Child in Need Plan or professionals are
looking to create an initial Child in Need Plan. As well as supporting children and young people to
have a meaningful voice and influence in meetings
and when decision

s are being made about their
lives, the Barnardo’s Advocacy Service can support
children and young people when they want to make
a complaint. We are also able to provide Non-Instructed
Advocacy to disabled children and young people. For Advocacy for children and young people
under the age of 5-years-old or over the age
of 18-years-old with additional needs, please
contact the service to discuss. Accessing our service
Referrals can be made by the allocated Social
Worker or another professional responsible for
the child’s plan. We are not able to receive self
referrals, Barnardo’s Advocacy will accept referrals for children who meet the criteria. A Barnardo’s Advocacy Worker ensures that
children and young people understand their rights
and are able to make an informed decision about the
choices that are available to them. The Advocacy
Worker will not seek to influence the views of a child
or young person but will enable them to share their
views in a way they chose to. An Advocacy Worker will liaise with the child or
young person and their parents / carers directly to
arrange meeting with them. The Advocacy Worker
might also speak to the child or young person’s Social
Worker. The Advocacy Worker will then represent
these views at the meeting and can also support
the child or young person to attend. YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY and EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR ON THIS PAGE: You will take responsibility for postings under your identity and provide information at your own risk. The Barnardo’s Jersey Advocacy Team hosted a brilliant participation event at Jump Jersey, where the children we support had the chance to play, bounce, and have fun alongside their advocates.
It was wonderful to see everyone laughing, building connections, and enjoying time together in a relaxed and energetic environment away from more formal settings.
Moments like these help ensure every child feels heard, valued, and supported 💚
A big thank you to our amazing team and to the children for bringing so much joy to the day! Also a huge thank you to The Bosdet Foundation for making all this happen🥰

💚Fill up a Child’s Emotional Cup 💚
A child’s behavior is often a reflection of how full (or empty) their emotional cup feels.
Connection, validation, and encouragement go a long way. 💛 🥤
Filling their cup doesn’t take big moments, just small, consistent ones.
The way we listen, validate, and connect becomes their inner voice.

This , we’re reflecting on the women whose strength and leadership continue to shape Barnardo’s.

Across our services, we see every day how women and girls continue to show that same commitment - giving time, resilience and care while balancing the demands of work, family, education and everyday life. 💚

We are dedicated to ensuring women and girls feel heard, respected and supported, with spaces to speak openly, access help and build resilience for the future.

🌟 We’ve got some fantastic news to share! 🌟
Barnardo’s Jersey has been successful in securing its service with the Government of Jersey💚 This means that we can continue providing an advocacy service to children and young people aged 5–18 who are receiving support through Child Protection or Child in Need.
We are beyond proud to continue delivering this invaluable service, making sure that every child and young person is truly seen and heard. 🗣️✨
Thank you to all the amazing colleagues who supported us through the process. You know who you are, and we could not have done it without you!
As a Team Manager, I could not be prouder of our wonderful team, Amie, Jo and Jasmine. 💜 Your passion, dedication and drive make such a difference every single day.
And of course, a huge thank you to all the children and young people that we continue to support.
We can also share that our team have now all qualified with their Level 4 Certificate in Independent Advocacy Practice.
Here’s to continuing to shout from the rooftops 📣 so every child in Jersey who needs a voice has the chance to be heard.
Team Manager Hayley 😊

A Child’s Voice: ADHD – Inattentive Type 💚

This isn’t about not listening.
It’s about a brain that drifts, disconnects, and works hard to stay present in a world that rarely slows down.

ADHD Inattentive Type is often missed because it’s quiet.
These children aren’t always disruptive they’re overlooked, misunderstood, and told they’re “daydreaming”, “lazy”, or “not trying”.

This visual shares what life can feel like from the inside.
The mental noise. The effort it takes to focus. The shame that builds when needs go unseen.

When we listen to the child’s voice, we move from correction to connection.
From frustration to understanding.
From labels to support.💚

This wasn’t a tantrum.
It was his nervous system asking for help.

When a child is overwhelmed, their body goes into survival mode.
Sounds feel louder.
Lights feel brighter.
Touch can feel painful.
Words disappear.

What you’re seeing isn’t defiance.
It isn’t manipulation.
It isn’t bad behavior.

It’s a nervous system that has reached its limit.

Autistic meltdowns aren’t choices.
They’re not something a child does.
They’re something a child experiences.

In those moments, consequences don’t teach.
Lectures don’t land.
And pressure only adds more weight.

What helps is safety.
Calm voices.
Dim lights.
Predictability.
Connection without demands.

Sometimes the bravest thing a child can do is ask for help—
even when that help comes out as tears, silence, or shutdown.

If you’ve ever paused before reacting…
If you’ve ever chosen comfort over correction…
You made a difference.

Different doesn’t mean broken.
It means their nervous system works differently. 🌈

If this helped you see meltdowns through a kinder lens, please share 💚
