We are SO proud of our team member Niamh, who in 6 months and a week (it normally takes a minimum of a year!) has completed her level 4 accreditation for Independent Advocacy through our UK training provider, Blackbelt.

We are very lucky to have had the Queen of Independent Advocacy Kate Mercer herself, to visit us this week to boost us all on our development journey and complete the required in person assessments for this qualification.

Niamh is a natural and courageous advocate, boldly holding all parties accountable for outcomes for the young people she works alongside and is a very valued member of our team

Yesterday morning we spent some time in professional development with one of Jersey’s absolute legends.

Jason Wyse from Silkworth Lodge as our on island expert in managing a service with professionals with lived experience, and a training session on ‘professional boundaries’.

Professional boundaries are all about ensuring that our practice is safe for the people we work alongside and the professionals doing the work.

We as a team were thinking about how different life would be if we all had the opportunity to learn about healthy boundaries as children, because none of us are born knowing this stuff.

Training, training, training… to provide the best possible advocacy service for the people we work along side.

Yesterday morning’s training session for our team of advocates was led by the Head of Standards and Quality in children’s services, Sue Butterworth.

Sue talked us through the range of different ways a social worker might work with a child and family, updated us on changes in children’s services and explained how we can approach her team if we are working with a young person who wants us to advocate for them on a matter of standards and quality.

All the contracts are signed, we are fully funded and fully staffed to provide advocacy for children in care (5-18) and care leavers (18-25).

Thank you to The Philip Gower Foundation, we are funded to work with any one else in Jersey who might have experienced living in care as a child.

Bare with us as we get into new routines, finding our way around our new office and get used to working together as a new team, we will be prioritising people in care and care leavers to start with and look forward ro continuing and developing our work with adults who have experienced life in care over the course of 2026.

💜 A HUGE thank you to our local businesses 💜

Now that our beautiful Christmas Eve gift boxes have been safely delivered, we want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to the incredible support we received in helping us create the boxes for the young people we advocate for.

Your generosity has helped us put together boxes filled with care, comfort and thoughtful treats - small things that carry a powerful message - you are seen, you matter, you are not alone.

To Zedra Group for your incredible donation which enabled us to launch the Christmas Eve Box idea, and to Hotel Chocolat, Maison Jersey and Paperclix, for your discounts and donations, from all of us at Jersey Cares - THANK YOU for standing with us and making such a difference. 💜

Today has been a sad day for Jersey Cares as it’s been advocate Sheldon’s last official day with us.

Sheldon has been a loyal advocate to young people with Jersey Cares for nearly two years, building beautiful relationships with children and young adults leaving care, as well as some of our older care experienced people and supporting and helping to develop our new recruits in their early days.

We are delighted for Sheldon that he has secured a position working with children all day every day, which is where is heart is, and are chuffed to bits that it is on island and he will still be positively impacting the lives of young people in Jersey.

Sheldon has been a much loved team member and advocate and though we will miss him very much, we wish him all the very best in his new role.

Today we had a team brunch and welcomed some of our new staff to join us.

We are all set to be fully staffed from beginning of January, having signed two new permanent, full time staff contracts today AND expect to have three advocacy apprentices training alongside us.

We have asked new team members to prepare to share a bit more about themselves in the new year- needless to say, all are passionate about ensuring the voice of children living in care and care experienced people is heard… and one of them disclosed that they dressed as a sheep in their first job!!

10/12/2025

Jersey Cares has moved home and is going to be changing how we do things a little bit.

In the new year we are planning to spend much more time out and about visiting our young people in the places that are best for them, that can be at school, at home with foster parents, in children’s homes, secure settings, or in the coffee lounge or a private meeting room at our new office on Grenville Street- whatever feels safest and most helpful for our young people in being heard.

We are a bit tricky to find the first time- but we do now have much better lift access and just a few steps at the front and a bus stop right outside in Grenville Street (just up and across from Green Street car park).

One of our young people has made us a video to help. You can see that the young person is asking for £15 pounds fo remove the watermark- please tell us whether this video is helpful and worth £15!!

Our new address is:
Cumulus One
Forum 3
Grenville Street
St Helier
Jersey
JE2 4UF

Our telephone number, email addresses and website have stayed the same.

So please tell us… is this video useful and worth paying a young person £15 for?! If it’s a yes, we’ll upload the cleaned up version once we’ve paid our ransom!!

Well that’s all the Christmas Eve surprise boxes sent off to our children who are living in children’s homes or with foster families in England at the moment.

Staying in touch with our children in England through visiting them, regular advocacy calls to them and sending beautiful genuine Jersey gifts through generous sponsorship of local organisations is such an important part of our work.

We hope that not only will it remind our children that they belong to Jersey and that Jersey belongs to them, and that the people of Jersey care about them and their connection to the island, at Christmas and always.

Our thanks to Jersey Post for their amazingly efficient service, to the lady’s fellowship group at St Thomas’s Church who made the gift tags and to the local companies who helped put these together… more of that once the children have had a chance to open them- we can’t spoil the surprise just yet!

We had a very special evening with the board as a staff team last night, reflecting on the work we have been doing this year and our preparations to ensure that every child in care, care leaver and care experienced person in Jersey can access really regular and solid advocacy.

We are very excited about our new contract starting in January, the people who have been training with us this year ready to be part of it, and the five new people who are due to join our organisation in the new year. Watch this space for details and…

Mental health in young people.

Today Amy, the team manager for children and young people at Mind Jersey came to meet with the advocacy team at Jersey Cares to update us on all services that they have available to support people aged 7- 25, and their carers too.

Although we would never share information with each other without young people asking us to, we are really pleased to know more about the different types of support that our young people can access in Jersey.
