For further details of becoming a member of the Archaeology Section, please contact us for further details. Archaeology is one of the principal research areas within the Société Jersiaise and we are the Field Archaeology Department headed by our own professional field archaeologist and the Archaeology Section comprised of members of the Société. Our focus within the Société's mission is the study,
sharing and safeguarding of knowledge of archaeology in Jersey. We have several projects covering different past eras and we work throughout the year on different aspects of them. In the fine weather we will often be out surveying land and/or excavating and when not cleaning, cataloguing and researching finds. If you are interested to join us and getting involved, please contact us via email. No archaeology experience is required as training will be given - you just need lots of enthusiasm and enjoy working as a team! KNOW OF AN INTERESTING SITE? We are always keen to understand more about the Island's archaeology and discovering new places and site to study and research is high on our list of priorities. If you know about or suspect there is an interesting place / site which should be looked into, please let us know. We can survey a site (always with the permission of the owner) and we have access to geophysical equipment to conduct underground surveys without any excavation. CONTACT US

POLITE AND GENTLE REMINDER
All land and property in Jersey has an owner, and you should ask permission to be there. Absent the agreement from the owner otherwise, anything which is found there belongs to the owner subject to a few exceptions when precious metals are found, which belong to the Crown. This equally applies to places to which the public typically have free access! You should therefore not remove anything unless it is for the purpose of ensuring that is not lost of destroyed before it can be recovered archaeologically, and even then it should be reported to the Finds Officer at the Historic Environment Record at the Jersey Archive. Finds once recorded, photographed etc are generally returned to the finder if they wish and they are not given /loaned for public display. In addition, and most importantly, it is prohibited unless you have applied and received specific and express permission under relevant laws to metal detect, dig, excavate, or even disturb the soil at a Listed site or place. There is a list of such sites on the Jersey Government website but you should assume that most historic sites and buildings around the Island are listed. Large open spaces like Les Landes Common and Blanches Banques (the Sand Dunes) are also listed and their listing also protects the picking and uprooting of any plants and the interference with animal, reptile and bird species unless with prior statutory permission. Here at the Société, we are happy to provide advice in this respect if requested. Please contact us by email.
