Jersey Biodiversity Centre

Jersey Biodiversity Centre Working to collate biodiversity data for Jersey, Channel Islands, and make it available for environmental decision making and research.
(1)

We are a small environmental charity, working to collate biodiversity data for Jersey, Channel Islands, and make it available for environmental decision making and research. Biological records are vitally important as they underpin conservation decision making and policy in Jersey. The Jersey Biodiversity Centre’s primary purpose is to collate this data, which is collected by a diverse range of am

ateur and professional biological recorders, in to a central database where it can be managed, made available, and mobilised, primarily for the purpose of safeguarding the Island’s natural environment for future generations. Through the application of innovative use of technology and science, the JBC works to harness the enthusiasm and knowledge of Jersey’s biological recording community and improve how data is collected, collated, managed and shared. The Jersey Biodiversity Centre works in close partnership with amateur and professional biological recorders and biological recording groups to promote biological recording and citizen science monitoring schemes and to provide training, support and tools to assist with the collection and submission of biological records to the Jersey Biodiversity Centre database. The Jersey Biodiversity Centre database provides researchers and environmental decision makers with a centralised database of high-quality biodiversity data for Jersey.

Happy 🦋✨

Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies belonging to the family Papilionidae, with over 550 species found worldwide, except in Antarctica.

The Swallowtail species that can be spotted in Jersey (Papilio machaon gorganus) is our largest native butterfly. It's the continental variety and more active than the British variety (Papilio machaon brittannicus).

Keep an eye out for these beautiful butterflies and submit your sightings to the Jersey Biodiversity Centre: www.jerseybiodiversitycentre.org.je/records/enter-casual/
Sightings can also be submitted by iRecord or iNaturalist.

📸 Submitted by Jenny Cabot, Richard Perchard & Tim Ransom
Swallowtails are protected under the Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021.

Great Garden Bat Watch: 12th-14th of June

The annual Great Garden Bat Watch is approaching, from Friday June 12th to Sunday June 14th.

Earlier this week, all primary schools were issued this Bingo Card for a chance to win a bat walk for their class!

Your night-time picnic in the garden or a green space could help collect data on bat sightings.

The Jersey Biodiversity Centre even has an easy page for submitting data - https://jerseybiodiversitycentre.org.je/records/Great-Garden-Bat-Watch

Lou Wagstaffe, from Intertidal Walks runs day and night safaris into the intertidal zone on the south east coast of Jersey to educate and inspire others to protect and preserve this unique environment. On these walks, Lou takes stunning photographs of the wonderful wildlife found on our shoreline and submits them to us as biological records. 🦐

Today, we've chosen some of her wonderful images of our favourite sea slugs!
🐌 Slender sea slug (Facelina auriculata)
💜 Violet sea slug (Edmundsella pedata)
🐚 Alder’s sea slug (Aeolidiella alderi)
🪸 Anemone sea slug (Berghia coerulescens)
🌞 Solar-powered sea slug (Elysia viridis)

Sound interesting? Why not book yourself on an Intertidal Walks and discover Jersey's amazing intertidal zone.

This we're celebrating our marine biological recorders! 🐚🦐🌊

Exploring Jersey's vast intertidal zone and wonderful territorial waters takes time, energy, and dedication. Our biological recorders all have unique stories and motivations for biological recording, meet some of those recorders on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8zMRZSt1MQ&t=28s

This we're shining a light on marine biological records 🌊

With a 90km long coastline at the highwater mark and a remarkably large intertidal zone (up to 12m during spring tides), marine biological recorders have unique opportunities to explore Jersey's coastal zone and beyond.

The Société Jersiaise Marine Biology Section iNaturalist project allows marine biology enthusiasts across the island to:
🦀 Record their sightings
🕵️ Gain help with identification
🐟 Contribute important data to the Jersey Biodiversity Centre database
