Stroke Association Jersey

Stroke Association Jersey Every day in Jersey, people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke.

We're here to help them, and the people close to them, find strength through support.

Like an iceberg, many of the challenges stroke survivors live with every day remain hidden beneath the surface.

Stroke is more than what you can see.

Like an iceberg, many of the challenges stroke survivors live with every day remain hidden beneath the surface.

This Stroke Awareness Month, we want to make those invisible challenges visible.

Take a look at the iceberg and count how many hidden challenges you’ve lived with since your stroke. Then leave the same number of 💜 in the comments.

Living with brain fog, fatigue and loneliness? That’s 💜💜💜

Peer support groups are a safe, welcoming space to connect with others who truly understand...

After a successful first peer support group, we are delighted to announce our second session for The Sophie Reid Neurological Association 🤍

Living with a neurological illness can often feel isolating, but no one should have to face it alone. Our peer support groups are a safe, welcoming space to connect with others who truly understand, whether you are personally affected, supporting a loved one, or navigating life after diagnosis and treatment.

🗓 Friday 29th May
📍 Old Magistrates Court, Town Hall
⏰ 2pm – 4pm

Come along for a relaxed afternoon of conversation, support, understanding, and community. There is no pressure, just a chance to meet others, share experiences if you wish, and know that you are not alone on this journey.

We are so grateful for the support shown at our first session and look forward to continuing to build this community together 🤍

Please take a few minutes to tell us what you think about life after stroke services here in Jersey.
Stroke Association Jersey is working closely with Health and Care Jersey and Jersey Stroke Support to look at a 'Stroke Strategy for Jersey'. We’re focusing on 'life after stroke', looking at what happens when a stroke survivor is discharged from hospital, including rehabilitation and long-term care.
We’re keen to hear about your lived experiences as either a stroke survivor, or family member, friend or carer of a loved one.
We’d be really grateful if you would complete a short survey. Here’s the link: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/AZJM6R/
The deadline is now Friday 1 May.
Your views will feed into a Post Stroke Working Group looking at the outcomes from the survey, which in turn will help to form part of the Stroke Strategy.
If you are a stroke survivor, carer or family member and you’d like to be part of the Post Stroke Working Group, please email [email protected]
Thank you for helping to shape the future of stroke care in Jersey!

Therese was determined not to let stroke define her and, with support, once again became an active member of the Jersey community. Do read her story. 💜

Therese has always led a busy and purposeful life.

A former finance professional, she had just published a book about the Occupation of Jersey.

But everything changed after she had an ischaemic stroke in 2022.

‘I was at home tidying up when my right leg went weak, I fell onto the floor and broke my nose.’

‘My husband heard a bang and came to help me, but I was so scared, I wouldn’t let him go. He had to drag me across the floor while he reached for the telephone.’

Therese was rushed to hospital. An immediate scan confirmed that a blood clot had temporarily blocked blood flow to some areas of her brain.

She spent three weeks in a rehabilitation ward, adjusting to her new reality.

‘Thankfully, the sensation in my leg returned, as did my speech. But a persistent issue has been writing.’

‘Writing is my lifeblood, but when I tried to write after the stroke, I couldn’t put a sentence together.’

After leaving hospital, Therese struggled to cope, and she fell into a deep depression.

‘On New Year’s Day, I lost the plot and I just no longer wanted to be here.’

Therese spoke to her GP and started on antidepressants. This helped her get to a place where she was happy to accept support.

A Stroke Support Coordinator, called Trudi, provided Therese with regular phone calls and home visits.

‘Trudi phoned me, and we had a good chat. She was brilliant.'

‘Thanks to Trudi, I’ve attended some meetings about areas I’m keen to be involved in, such as improving the stroke pathway and supporting carers.’

Determined not to let stroke define her, Therese is once again an active member of the community.

Therese invited guests at her and Peter’s 60th diamond wedding anniversary celebration to make a donation to the charity instead of giving presents.

The event raised over £900 and the couple were delighted their special day could also make a meaningful difference others.

This Stroke Awareness Month, let’s Make May Purple to raise awareness and fund vital support for all people affected by stroke.

It was a privilege to be able to meet everyone at the Connect Me Jersey Carers Event at the Radisson Hotel this week. Thank you Connect Me Jersey for organising this fantastic event, bringing so many support charities and organisations together in one place and making sure the island’s carers know they’re really valued by the community. 💜

When you raise money for the Stroke Association, you’re helping pay for vital research such as this, which is part-funded by the Stroke Association. 💜
Stroke survivors living with persistent arm and hand weakness use a specialised device and connected earpiece to stimulate the vagus nerve (a major nerve that connects the brain to the body) to strengthen hand and arm mobility. This clip from the BBC’s Tech Now shows what a difference it’s made for Amanda James-Hammett.
