Feliz Dia De Madeira!
A very happy Madeira Day!

Madeira Day falls on 1 July each year and is the celebration of autonomy of the Island of Madeira from mainland Portugal, which was adopted in 1976. It's an important day in the Madeiran calendar with celebrations, services, and parades taking place.

Jersey has a proud strong connection with Madeira as many Portuguese Islanders are from Madeira or have Madeiran roots.

Muito obrigado a todos que tornaram o Dia de Portugal tão especial!

What a wonderful celebration! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Dia de Portugal.

Project Luso was established to shine a light on the Portuguese community, to recognise their contribution to Jersey and celebrate culture, heritage and the many stories that have been told… and are still to be told.

We couldn't have hosted such a vibrant event without an army of support, partners and friends.

Thank you to our sponsors Jersey Community Relations Trust, Connect Me Jersey, Jersey Community Foundation, Jersey International Cultural Centre.

Our biggest thanks and gratitude go to Project Luso manager Vivianne Rapizzi, with unrivalled support from Paul Milbank at Khora Partners for their dedication and delivering the event with oodles of imagination, curiosity and commitment.

As well as Vivianne and Paul on the front line, we owe our thanks to the Project Luso Action Learning Group including Claudia Andrade and Hayley Gibaut, Kate Wright, Deputy Carina Alves - Reform Jersey, Sasha Gibb and Chay Pike. They have helped us to capture the true spirit of community and celebration.

Without a doubt, the afternoon was full of wonderful local talent. Beautiful sounds and voices echoed through the square, perfect for gatherings just like this. Special thanks to Marco Faria for the songs and MC, the wonderful musicians playing fado, record artist David Gaspar, the amazing young singers and poetry performers, as well as the heart-warming Bailinho de Madeira traditional dancers.

Hayley at The Stoodio Jersey was the creative behind the beautiful signage and chalk art, that was enjoyed by children and adults alike! Thanks also to Claudia and Jersey Sport for organising soft play and activities.

And what would be a festa without food?! We had lots of lovely snacks brought by members of the community. With special thanks to Sweet Mouth , and our friends at Sweet Spot, City Café, Café Jac.

To all our volunteers pulling in favours at the last hour, helping with delivery, set up and tidy up – your efforts don’t go unnoticed for the work you do for your community.

Obrigado!
