The yellow jersey’s retired — the legend isn’t.
It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news that Trevor “El Presidente” Cole passed away yesterday, after a brave fight with MND.
If life is a box of chocolates, Trevor didn’t just pick one; he tried the whole selection, offered you a bite, then told you a story about the time he ate a similar one with someone famous in a place you’ve never heard of… and somehow made it sound completely normal.
Cycling, work, music, motor cars, fine food, good wine, Trevor collected passions the way the rest of us collect café stops. He made friends everywhere, with everyone, from every walk of life. Once you met him, you didn’t forget him, and you certainly didn’t escape without being entertained.
Trevor was instrumental in founding the Lasardine Cycling Club during the Stroke Charity Ride in September 2014. In classic Trevor fashion, he promptly appointed himself El Presidente first Sardine on the list, naturally. Jersey Stroke Support was close to his heart, and thanks in no small part to Trevor’s hard work and persuasive charm, it remains the charity we support.
He came on every Sardine trip and nights out. He refused to ride a road bike because why would he? El Presidente always rolled on his beloved TwentyNiner, like a man making a point.
And then there were the Tour de France adventures where Trevor had an almost supernatural ability to attach himself to the locals. One moment, he’d be climbing rather slowly; the next, he’d be mid-conversation with a French family having a picnic. The rest of us would be grinding towards a summit… and Trevor would be sitting happily eating lunch, having traded the top for a proper human moment. That, in a single scene, was El Presidente.
Every Sardine has their own Trevor story, too many to fit into one post, and too precious to rush. We’re sure everyone who met him will have one too.
Thank you, El Presidente, for enriching our lives, for the laughter, the legend, and the friendship.
Don’t forget to carry on wearing the Yellow Jersey.
