Royal Air Force Vector Badges

Royal Air Force Vector Badges This page charts a personal project to try and produce vector graphic versions of Royal Air Force badges. They must only be used by those authorised to do so.

It was initially started to produce badges for an album of units, bases and squadrons in which my extended family have served... but expanded! Copyright: All badges retain their Crown Copyright and have only been reproduced for artistic and research purposes.

While the primary purpose of this site is to “look back” on past badges and preserve some of the designs for posterity, it will not escape people’s notice that that RAF is transitioning over to the new Monarch’s preferred Tudor Crown. As a nod to this transition, this badge shows an example of the RAF Station Halton badge with an interpretation of the new crown.

I do not intend to actively transition the badges I do over to this crown as I am sure that the Official RAF Graphics team and commercial providers will be hot on the case of this transition. I will however be doing a few examples as time passes and especially when units disband.

I will shortly post some comparisons of the crowns as some of the more observant of you will notice the new Tudor Crown does entirely follow the pre EIIR era Tudor Crown design, nor does the crown match the Tudor crown on CIIIR’s Cypher (note the addition of pearls between the gems present on the RAF version that are not visible on the Cypher version).

In the meantime, it is somehow nice to see that RAF Badges remain an evolving form, like the Organisation itself, modernising its design for the future, but still reflecting its past.

It was recently brought to my attention by a colleague that while I have been away, someone has started selling my artwork on ebay. Please do not purchase any of these items as they are non-authorised, I have not approved their production and their clear breach of MOD Licensing puts at risk the whole electronic badge archive project by violating clearly established Crown Copyright rules.

For the avoidance of doubt - all vector artwork I produce (and subsequent posted bitmaps) are for educational and archive purposes ONLY and may not be used for commercial activities or sold in their own right.

Thank you to all those who spotted this and reported it. I have written a polite note to the seller but if people see these in future, I will have to start speaking to eBay directly and the MOB Licensing people.
