Getting a technology to work in a lab is the easy part.
Most startups can push their innovation to TRL 4 or 5 using specialized laboratories.

That’s not the hard part.

The hard part is what comes next: making that technology actually usable by the people who’ll rely on it in the field.
That requires something a lab can never offer.

Real operational conditions. Direct engagement with subject matter experts, active-duty military personnel who know exactly what’s needed and what’s missing. Tactical scenarios built and tested through extended reality and immersive simulation.

This is exactly what Calvarina and Fondazione SAFE bring to every innovator who walks through our doors.
A lab can prove a technology works. It can’t prove a technology is ready.

Only a real environment, with real end users and real operational gaps, can do that.

That’s the gap between a laboratory and Calvarina. And it’s the gap that determines whether a technology stays promising, or actually reaches the people who need it.

Most technology fails before it even reaches the people who need it.
Why? Because it was built for one market, one use case, one assumption about the world.
That’s the gap NATO DIANA was built to close.

Instead of innovators guessing what defence and security forces actually need, DIANA goes straight to the source: military end users. Their real capability gaps become the starting point. From there, DIANA helps innovators accelerate, adapt, and shape their technology around what’s actually needed in the field.

To make that possible, DIANA built a network of accelerators and test centres across Europe. Fondazione SAFE is one of them, and we bring two things to that mission.

First, scale. Over 25,000 square meters of experimentation space at Calvarina, built for real testing under real conditions.
Second, access. A deep, trusted network with armed forces and security forces, the people who’ll actually use what gets built.

Not a simulation. Not a lab. The real environment, the real end users, from day one.

That’s the difference between a technology that looks promising on paper and one that’s actually ready for the world it was built for.

A former NATO military installation, reborn as a testing and training ground for Europe’s security and defence innovation.
Since 2021, Fondazione SAFE has transformed this site into a proving ground for advanced technologies, hosting field tests, demonstrations, and validation activities for projects funded under the European Defence Fund (EDF), as well as NATO’s DIANA accelerator programme. Among them, MoSaiC an EDF project focused on drone technology, XR, and CBRN detection capabilities.
From sensor systems to remote-piloted platforms, Calvarina offers a real-world environment where research meets application, bridging innovation, defence, and civil protection.

From lab to the field in months, not years. Calvarina Testing and Training area is one of Europe’s rare spaces where dual-use startups test their technologies in real conditions alongside military and civilian end users as an accredited NATO DIANA test centre since 2023.
