PLESSI
Making waves 🌊🌊🌊

As part of our As Above, So Below curatorial program, we had the pleasure of a private studio visit with pioneer of digital art Fabrizio Plessi, diving deeper into his creative universe.

Breaking rules, making new waves, and transforming water, light, sound, and technology into poetic experience, .plessi reminds us that the ocean is not only a subject, but a force — a mirror of movement, memory, and imagination.

Requiem for the Caspian, 2024 by

Short documentary film, single-channel projection. Co-produced by ZEITGEIST19

Requiem for the Caspian observes a coastline in withdrawal and the lives suspended around that disappearance. The Caspian coast is drying out, and fishing villages give way to industrial landscapes. On the remote island of Pirallahi, off the coast of Baku, the inhabitants of an old village await the sea’s return while land grabs continue, with factories, warehouses, and oil rigs advancing over what was once a vibrant underwater ecosystem. As the sea recedes, its spirit persists, glimpsed in motifs that feel almost biblical. The film allows the sea to endure as presence, a force that haunts fishermen and women, and other resident creatures, in a desperate attempt to hold on to stories that are being erased.

The film frames this disappearance not only as environmental collapse but as a form of cultural and physical colonisation, a territory remade by extractive economies, where landscape, narrative, and memory are occupied, renamed, and repurposed.
Projected as a standalone work, Requiem for the Caspian functions as documentary ground; its imagery threads through the installation’s screens, reappearing as source material and later transformed through AI. Film and installation thus operate as two registers of the same testimony: one direct, one re-authored, both tracing what is lost when a sea is reduced to territory.

Thetis, 2026 by

Holographic artwork, created for As Above, So Below

In Thetis, Andrea Crespi conjures the sea nymph of Greek mythology within a primordial jellyfish
suspended inside a holographic vitrine. The work proposes the abyss as a realm that is not only biological, but also symbolic: a space where myth, memory, and marine life converge. The jellyfish becomes a threshold organism, carrying an ancestral presence that hovers between nature and immateriality, as though the deep sea were itself an archive of origins, apparitions, and latent futures. Between science and myth, natural data and archetype, Thetis emerges not as an image of the sea but as its liquid consciousness—an embodiment of its invisible, profound, and primordial dimension.
Through holographic technology, myth reappears as a contemporary form of apparition, unsettling the boundary between human and non-human, organism and symbol, presence and projection. Set against the frescoed interior, Thetis resonates with the classical pictorial language of the former church, extending the work’s dialogue between myth, apparition, and perception. Technology does not demystify myth here; rather, it becomes the medium through which the sea’s deeper symbolic life returns to view. In this way, Thetis transforms archetype into a post-biological form, where memory,
matter, and image merge in a single perceptual experience of the living.

Inspired by ongoing exchanges developed through the As Above, So Below podcast series, these dialogues became a living platform for inquiry — sitting around the tree, between whispering forests and waters, moving in circular time, where listening becomes a shared space, a ritual, a mantra.

Intertwining Earth and Ocean, the day invited deeper engagement with the ecological, cultural, and perceptual conditions that define our present, opening a space for reflection, encounter, and new ways of sensing our relationship to the world. Rooted in a shared understanding of our interconnectedness, the conversations also explored our collective responsibility as stewards of the living planet — caring for the ecosystems, cultures, and more-than-human worlds that sustain us, while imagining pathways toward reciprocity, regeneration, and coexistence.

Soon available to listen through the As Above, So Below podcast series 🎧🌿🌊
