Featured in Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026 is Torlarp Larpjaroensook, a Thai contemporary artist whose sculptural and installation practice reveals the poetic potential of everyday objects.

Working with found materials and elements drawn from daily life, Larpjaroensook recontextualizes familiar forms to encourage new ways of seeing. His works invite audiences to interact with objects that appear ordinary at first glance, yet gradually reveal layers of reflection, humor, and quiet contemplation.

Through this approach, his practice explores the subtle relationship between people and their surroundings, highlighting how meaning can emerge through simple encounters with materials and space.

At Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026, a Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Larpjaroensook’s work reflects on the poetic intersections between the mundane and the imaginative, inviting viewers to discover beauty within the overlooked details of everyday life.

Nadiah Bamadhaj’s The Claim reimagines a lost possibility in Javanese history, envisioning a female sovereign who rises during a time of political upheaval and colonial encroachment. Drawing from historical accounts, royal chronicles, and cultural symbolism, the work presents an alternative narrative in which leadership is shaped not by conquest, but by wisdom, diplomacy, and resilience. At its centre stands an elderly female ruler draped in a specially designed batik motif inspired by the Javanese parang rusak, embodying strength, authority, and a form of power rooted in care rather than domination.

Thank you to The Straits Times for featuring The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026 and highlighting the growing presence of Southeast Asian voices at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Presented at Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfù, Venice, the exhibition brings together artists from Southeast Asia, Serbia, and Ireland whose works explore migration, memory, identity, and cultural exchange across borders.

“Dr Apinan Poshyananda – who commissioned the first three editions of the Thai pavilion – has established the country’s presence beyond the national frame by curating an exhibition through the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation, which he co-founded with one of South-east Asia’s biggest beverage companies ThaiBev.”

Soe Yu Nwe’s works bring together mythology, faith, and personal history through hybrid beings that exist between human, animal, and plant realms. Drawing on animist traditions, Burmese folklore, and Chinese mythology, the artist explores themes of identity, transformation, and belonging.

At the center of the installation is Pink Serpent (2018), inspired by the artist’s birth in the Year of the Earth Snake and reflecting on her experiences as a Shan Chinese woman in Myanmar. Together with Snake Woman (2024) and Naga Maedaw (2024), the works revisit the mythical naga and other shapeshifting figures that emerge from cultural dislocation, memory, and faith.

Presented within The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026, these fluid, hybrid forms resonate with the exhibition’s themes of migration, estrangement, and the continual crossing of cultural and spiritual boundaries.

Ruangsak Anuwatwimon, together with the ART WORMs Collective, presents The Mekong Fulcrum: Excavated Gods, a reflection on the profound environmental and cultural transformations taking place along the Mekong River. Drawing on more than a decade of on-site research, conversations with local communities, and the collection of materials from the river itself, the installation traces the stories, traditions, and ecosystems shaped by one of Southeast Asia’s most vital waterways. Through evocative spatial and sensory elements, the work invites visitors to consider what is being lost and the fragile balance between human intervention and the natural world.

Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026 introduces Yasmin Jaidin, an artist whose practice reflects on cultural memory, transformation, and the fragility of everyday materials.

Working with substances such as sugar, flour, grass, and fabric, Jaidin constructs delicate installations that embody both vulnerability and resilience. Her choice of materials stems from the early years of her practice in Brunei, where limited access to traditional art supplies led her to experiment with ordinary objects drawn from daily life.

Through these subtle yet evocative gestures, her work explores the shifting dynamics of cultural identity and the ways traditions are preserved, altered, and reimagined across generations.

At Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026, a Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Jaidin’s work reflects on the delicate processes through which cultures evolve, revealing the quiet power embedded within everyday materials and gestures.

A look back at our journey through the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, where the SMC team spent time exploring exhibitions, discovering new perspectives, and engaging with artworks from around the world.

From historic palazzos to contemporary installations, each encounter offered a reminder of art’s ability to transcend borders, connect cultures, and spark meaningful conversations. These moments of observation and exchange continue to inspire the vision behind The Spirits of Maritime Crossing, a project rooted in dialogue, movement, and the shared histories that connect us across seas and generations.

As Venice becomes a meeting point for artists, curators, and audiences from across the globe, we are grateful to be part of this remarkable exchange of ideas and creativity.

Arahmaiani’s Flag Project makes an unmistakable statement at the entrance of The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026. Suspended above the passageways of Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfù, the vibrant flags greet visitors before they even step inside, transforming the historic Venetian setting into a space of reflection, dialogue, and cultural exchange. Displaying words such as “Peace” (Damai in Malay, written in Rumi script), “Faith” (ศรัทธา in Thai), “Brave” (written in Jawi script), “Water” (น้ำ in Thai), and “Nature” (Mala in Malay, Rumi script), the work brings together different languages, scripts, and cultural traditions. Bold yet contemplative, it stands as a powerful symbol of connection across borders, beliefs, and communities.
