On 9 July, the European Parliament "rejected" Chat Control. It passed anyway.

A parliamentary majority voted against reinstating mass scanning of private messages. It lost, not because the argument failed, but because a procedural threshold, timed for the last sitting day before summer recess, let a minority position win by default.

Together for Europe has published a review of what happened, why it matters beyond this one law, and what it reveals about how intergovernmental Europe currently works: unpopular measures get driven through Brussels by national governments who can then blame "Brussels" when it lands.

Europe is facing a paradox: while the world is changing faster than ever, its institutions often struggle to act in time. Delays, fragmented responses, and political inertia risk weakening not only Europe’s influence — but the foundations of the Union itself.

Europe is confronted with a structural paradox: individual states retain formal sovereignty, while the major challenges — energy security, defense capacity, technological investment, and climate transition — increasingly exceed national scale.

This video, produced in collaboration with The European Correspondent, presents a federalist answer: a European political structure capable of acting cohesively in strategic domains, while preserving strong domestic autonomy.

It raises a fundamental question about the future of European integration:
Can coordination among 27 governments be enough in an era of systemic geopolitical pressure, or does sovereignty itself now require a different institutional form?

, Editor-in-Chief of Kathimerini, Greece’s “Newspaper of Record”, and Director of the newspaper's English-language edition wrote an Op-Ed that converges with the points TfE has been making for a while now:

"The only way that Europe can preserve its sovereignty is to pool it."

This article highlights the dilemma facing its citizens: to build a federation capable of acting as a global power, or risk drifting into dependence on larger geopolitical blocs.

A reminder: Join us today at 17:15 CET (16:15 London, Lisboa, 18:15 Athens, Bucharest) for our Open Online Meeting. We want to initiate a conversation about the issues facing Europe right now and about federalism as a necessary condition for adressing them successfully, focusing on:
- European sovereignty in all its aspects
- Democratic legitimization and social coherence
We also want to discuss the best way forward for our organization: what should Together for Europe focus on? What should we be aiming for? Should we broaden the conversation? Zom in on particular challenges? Create a media space for these discussions and for advocating for and debating European federalism.
Your participation and input is invaluable for this project:

Together for Europe: A Call

The past two decades have seen crisis after crisis sweep the world, destabilising all that we had considered normal. And throughout all this, Europe at best barely ploughed through, and at worst lost ground and influence.

What kind of Europe do we want to live in — and how do we get there?

On Thursday, June 4 at 17:15 CET, Together for Europe is opening an online discussion for anyone who wants to take part in shaping the political priorities of our movement.

This is not about presenting finished answers. It is about opening a serious conversation with people from across Europe.

If you believe in European federalism, join us and help build it. If you disagree but believe the problems Europe faces are real, come and tell us why. We welcome disagreement — because the quality of debate matters more than the comfort of agreement.

Europe’s future will not be decided by the indifferent.

Europe’s current intergovernmental model is sold as “respect for sovereignty,” but in practice it weakens democracy.

Power shifts to opaque negotiations among governments, with little parliamentary accountability.

Constitutional subsidiarity would protect national autonomy while clarifying federal competences where collective action is essential.

The real choice isn’t centralization vs democracy, it’s backroom intergovernmentalism vs transparent, accountable European power.

Europe has a single market—but no single voice, no single power, no strategic autonomy.

From defense to industry to finance, fragmentation leaves the EU dependent in a world of empires.

Across left, center, and right, a new consensus is emerging: without federal political authority, Europe remains a rule-taker, not a geopolitical actor.

EUROPE: FEDERATION OR IRRELEVANCE

The Greenland debacle made it clear: we cannot depend on anyone outside our continent.

Aggression at our borders. Economic warfare. Threats from former allies. The EU's fragmented response shows we're dangerously vulnerable.

Individual member state sovereignty? It's a posture with nothing to back it up. We lack the scale to defend ourselves in a world of continental powers.

A democratic European federation—respecting our national identities while building real collective strength—is no longer idealistic. It's our ONLY path to genuine sovereignty.

Together for Europe calls on ALL federalist organizations and citizens to unite NOW:
✓ Organize in your community
✓ Contact us to amplify your message
✓ Build a unified movement across the democratic spectrum

The moment for debate is over. Federation or vassalage—the choice is ours.
