From Faial to Venice: an island dialogue between Atlantic and Lagoon 🫧
We are delighted to have welcomed architect and researcher Rita Campos Rita Campos from the Azores during her residency at Venezia Contemporanea, La Storta, located in the Old Ghetto of Venice.
Through her thoughtful research, Rita has developed a fascinating comparative study between two unique island contexts: the island of Venice and the island of Faial in the Azores. Her work explores how islands are not only geographical territories surrounded by water, but living systems shaped by memory, architecture, landscape, climate, and the ways communities inhabit fragile environments.
By placing Venice and Faial in conversation, Rita reveals unexpected connections between two distant places: different histories and cultures, yet united by their constant relationship with the sea and by the challenges of preserving identity in insular landscapes.
Her architectural approach invites us to look beyond borders and to understand islands as spaces of exchange, resilience, and imagination.
We are grateful to have hosted this meaningful research journey and to have shared a moment of dialogue between the Atlantic Ocean and the Venetian Lagoon. 💙
