The TICCIH Board is in grief. Just minutes after our Board meeting on Monday we learned about the passing away of Sir Neil Cossons, one of our founding fathers. TICCIH’s first international congress took place in Ironbridge in 1973 when he was the local museum’s director, when Ironbridge wasn’t yet a World Heritage Site, and when TICCIH didn’t even yet have a name. Neil: you have always been there, we met at so many places, we wanted much more time with you. We are in grief, exchanging photos, anecdotes and rereading your texts. We are also so very grateful for decades of inspiration and impressive humility. We will talk about you in our upcoming Bulletins.

Rest in Peace, dear Neil, we keep the industrial heritage flag high, and we’ll all meet again on the other side one day. See you there! ❤️🕊️😇

Marion for the TICCIH Board.

A “Herculean work” an “engineering challenge” that promised to bring “progress and development” to an “inhospitable” region of Brazil. The vanity of “conquering nature” by ignoring the territory, attempting to superimpose a rigid and sterile order of metal on top of the complexity of the Amazonian ecosystem. This is the most frequent narrative about the Madeira-Mamoré Railway.

African industrial heritage remains largely absent from global reflections on heritage preservation. Burkina Faso, with its late industrialization, provides a particularly relevant case study.

14/03/2026

Contemporary approaches to industrial heritage in China, where a first distinct model is emerging, differ significantly from those implemented in Northern Europe more than fifty years ago. While European cases continue to serve as important references, current practice in China increasingly formulates its own methods, grounded in specific social, cultural, economic, and political conditions and oriented toward models that better fit local needs.

The 'Atlas Del Patrimonio Latinoamericano', coordinated by two colleagues from Peru and Brazil, seeks to synthesize five cartographies that offer diverse perspectives on heritage in its broadest sense. Together, they represent the cultural reserve of the subcontinent while foregrounding a decolonizing approach to the world map that challenges traditional North–South, East–West representations.

The photography column of TICCIH Bulletin no. 110 features a selection of shots by Knut Markhus, who has also served on our association's board since the Kiruna congress. The images portray the Norwegian landscape, dominated by hydroelectric power generation infrastructure, particularly in the Tyssedal area, which sparked the entire region's industrial development. Much of the photographed heritage is now part of the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry.

In the picture, the power station building of Tyssedal Hydroelectric Power Plant by the Hardanger Fjord, commissioned in 1908. The facility remained in operation until 1989 and was protected by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage in 2000 as the first complete hydropower plant in Norway to be preserved. Today, it serves as the main venue of the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry.

Regrettable ignorance of India’s industrial history and its heritage persists, failing to consider their significance and value. In India, opinions regarding abandoned factories and industries vary among stakeholders from place to place. The platform for industrial heritage has not been established in India, despite the presence of significant sites. It is often overlooked by the public and officialdom alike, highlighting a lack of understanding, awareness, and concern for unprotected industrial heritage.

Founded in 1880 from the amalgamation of many small eighteenth-and nineteenth-century quarry operations, the Vermont Marble Company was one of a handful of businesses that characterized USA rapid growth during the country’s commercial transition to global prominence at the end of the nineteenth century.

The third edition of the Stati Generali del Patrimonio Industriale concludes today with a visit to the former Distilleria De Giorgi, following the meeting at the Museo Archeoindustriale di Terra d'Otranto. In the coming days, a photographic tale of Ticcih's participation in the Congress will follow; after this, a more detailed report in our next Bulletin.
Thanks to everyone who attended and whom we had the pleasure of meeting!
