He has travelled extensively and hitchhiked across Ukraine and beyond. He has been engaged in photography for over 14 years, focusing on industrial, nighttime, and extreme themes, especially in Kryvyi Rih, and shooting from unique angles using a drone. Industrial heritage linked to Venezuela’s oil industry remains largely overlooked despite its decisive role in shaping the country’s twentieth-century economy, territory and society. Petroleum extraction generated extensive infrastructures, oil camps and cultural landscapes that transformed settlement patterns while reflecting technological modernisation, social inequalities and foreign economic dependency. These landscapes embody the contradictions of extractive modernity, representing both industrial progress and environmental, political and economic fragility. Recognising them as industrial heritage does not celebrate exploitation but enables a critical interpretation of the historical processes that produced them. The Venezuelan case illustrates the broader challenge of interpreting industrial landscapes in the Global South, where modernisation is deeply intertwined with resource extraction and unequal development.

The revitalisation of Blast Furnace A at the Pokój Steelworks in Ruda Śląska is a landmark example of industrial heritage transformation, redefining the city’s spatial identity while preserving a unique national monument. Originally built in 1968, the furnace became a symbol of the city’s industrial development and was listed as a historic monument in 2012 before its acquisition by the municipality in 2018. The project combines conservation with new public functions, including a viewing platform, educational pathway, museum spaces, and contemporary architecture that respects the historic structure. Extending to the surrounding post-industrial area, it integrates green infrastructure and cultural, educational, and recreational uses, strengthening urban regeneration. As a carrier of collective memory, the blast furnace is being reinterpreted as a cultural and educational centre, demonstrating how industrial heritage can drive long-term spatial, social, and economic renewal.

Historic Trams at Risk: Academic and Community Approaches from Alexandria and Kolkata - An Experience Exchange Webinar
Woven into daily routines and neighbourhood identities for generations, trams are more than just old vehicles running on tracks. Long a living part of the cities they move through, they carry with them the collective memories of the people who have relied on them, and when a tram line disappears, it is not just a mode of transport that is lost; it is a piece of a city's story that cannot easily be replaced. Historic tram systems around the world are facing serious threats like devaluation, neglect, replacement, and demolition. In Alexandria, Egypt, the City Transformations Lab at Alexandria University and Cluster Cairo Lab have already been exploring this through their Summer School, examining historic trams as living elements of urban geography and memory. In Kolkata, India, the stakes feel even more urgent as the Calcutta Tram Users Association is on the ground fighting to protect one of the world’s last remaining historic tram networks through powerful grassroots advocacy and community mobilisation.
That is exactly why we are bringing people together. This upcoming TICCIH Webinar connects voices from Egypt, India, Australia, and beyond for an open and honest conversation about what it takes to protect historic tram heritage. We will be hearing from Melbourne’s TramJatra solidarity initiative, special remarks from Fedecrail’s representative at the City of Gothenburg, and much more. This is a conversation for everyone: heritage professionals, researchers, transport enthusiasts, students, community organisers, or simply anyone who has ever looked out of a tram window and felt something. The Industrial Heritage of South-East Asia: A New Regional Study for UNESCO in partnership with TICCIH and ISC20C

A new regional thematic study, The Industrial Heritage of South-East Asia, has been published by UNESCO in collaboration with The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) through its International Scientific Committee on Twentieth-Century Heritage (ISC20C).
Carried out by the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok with the support of the World Heritage Centre and the UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta, and undertaken with the active participation of States Parties and distinguished experts across the region, the study responds directly to a gap identified during the Third Cycle of Periodic Reporting for Asia and the Pacific. The resulting Regional Framework Action Plan for Asia and the Pacific (2023–2030), adopted by the World Heritage Committee, called for thematic studies on under-represented heritage themes to help identify future nomination opportunities.

“This study shows how a single thematic exercise can serve several of UNESCO’s Culture Conventions at once. It responds directly to the Regional Framework Action Plan for the Asia and the Pacific adopted by the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh in 2023, helping States Parties in South-East Asia identify and document industrial heritage for their national inventories and Tentative Lists under the 1972 World Heritage Convention. But it has also surfaced a wealth of associated traditions and practices, equally showing the relevance of this heritage category to the 2003 and 2005 Conventions. Just as importantly, it has built a new network of correspondents and expertise across the region: a foundation we can build on for future thematic studies and capacity-building to ensure a balanced, credible and representative World Heritage List.”

The result is the first coordinated regional inventory of its kind: a broad and inclusive mapping of industrial heritage sites, landscapes and associated practices across South-East Asia. Seventy sites and practices were documented in detail while 700 sites were included in a longer list of important industrial heritage sites and practices in the region. Around a quarter of contributions extended beyond physical sites to intangible traditions linked to industrial heritage, reflecting the diversity, complexity and geographical breadth of the region’s industrial past and its role in shaping economic, technological and social development. The process has also established the roots of a new regional network of industrial heritage correspondents, laying critical groundwork for future initiatives.

“The Report marks the beginning of a journey of discovery for many countries in South-East Asia. While some, such as the Philippines, have recognised and documented their industrial heritage for years, the pattern elsewhere is inconsistent, with some countries barely having begun the process. This is reflected in TICCIH’s comparatively weak representation in the region: aside from the 2019 inscription of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto in Indonesia, no other industrial heritage properties currently feature on the World Heritage List. An especially important outcome of the Report is that it has been a valuable means of building new networks of contacts across the region, while strengthening collaboration with UNESCO and ICOMOS.”

Industrial sites such as tin mines, textile mills, railways, oil infrastructure and harbour installations are important evidence of the region’s rapid postcolonial industrialisation, shaped by global trade, technology transfer and post-WWII political transformation. Applying the Twentieth-Century Historic Thematic Framework has helped bring this heritage into focus just as its significance is emerging and being defined, contributing to safeguarding it at a critical moment. Too often dismissed as too recent or too utilitarian to warrant heritage recognition, industrial sites like worker housing, power stations and shipyards in fact tell us as much about South-East Asia’s modernisation as any monument, and deserve the same rigour in how we identify, interpret and conserve them.”

World Heritage Volunteers 2026
Objetivos de la iniciativa de Voluntarios del Patrimonio Mundial Unesco (WHV)

La iniciativa se lanzó en 2008 para alentar a los jóvenes a emprender acciones concretas y desempeñar un papel activo en la protección, preservación y promoción del Patrimonio Mundial. Consiste en proyectos de campamentos de acción internacionales, coordinados por organizaciones e instituciones, que involucran a voluntarios nacionales e internacionales en actividades de sensibilización y trabajo práctico.

En el año 2026 se realizará por primera vez en Chile.

Lugar del voluntariado internacional
Sitio Patrimonio Mundial Oficinas Salitreras de Humberstone y Santa Laura, Región de Tarapacá, Chile.

Fechas
Del 15 al 27 de septiembre de 2026. No se aceptarán incorporaciones posteriores al comienzo ni partidas anteriores a la finalización.

Objetivos del voluntariado internacional de las Oficinas Salitreras de Humberstone y Santa Laura
Ampliar el conocimiento de los voluntarios sobre el patrimonio industrial minero, a través de una experiencia práctica, la cual les permitirá descubrir los valores y atributos patrimoniales de este paisaje cultural y la importancia histórica que tuvo este conjunto minero del salitre y el yodo, como una de las primeras industrias transnacionales de América Latina.
Las actividades se centrarán en el registro y análisis de estructuras que forman el área industrial de la Oficina de Santa Laura. Además, los antecedentes generados servirán de insumo para la elaboración de futuros proyectos orientados a la puesta en valor de este Sitio Patrimonio Mundial.

¿Cómo convertirse en voluntario?
Tener entre 18 y 30 años.
Ser estudiante o joven profesional de alguna de las siguientes áreas: arquitectura, ingeniería, conservación, arqueología, restauración, historia o áreas afines.
Presentar interés en temas tales como: Sitios Patrimonio Mundial, patrimonio cultural inmueble, patrimonio industrial, patrimonio salitrero, patrimonio minero, cultura pampina y ámbitos relacionados.

Postulación y plazos
Los interesados deberán enviar sus solicitudes al email [email protected], adjuntando la siguiente información:
Breve Currículum Vitae (máximo 2 páginas).
Carta de motivación (máximo 1 página).
Se recibirán solicitudes hasta el 28 de julio; posteriormente, se realizarán entrevistas vía Zoom a los postulantes los días 29, 30 y 31 de julio.

Medellín grew from a minor colonial village into Colombia’s main industrial city through capital accumulation, education, and railway connectivity.
Industrial growth, especially in textiles, shaped its urban expansion and a strong social identity centred on factory life, discipline, and workers’ communities.
From the 1970s, market liberalisation triggered industrial decline, widespread unemployment, and severe social crisis.
Although industrial heritage is increasingly recognised in Colombia, no comprehensive preservation or reintegration policy exists.
In Medellín, much textile-related heritage has disappeared, making the upcoming congress crucial for strengthening preservation and collective memory.

The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and PT Semen Padang organised a three-part online discussion on cement industrial heritage, focusing on the historic Indarung I Cement Plant and ENCI Cement Plant.
These two landmark sites reflect distinct industrial histories but share strong heritage value and potential for adaptive reuse.
The discussions explored their historical development, cultural significance, and strategies for transformation through conservation, restoration, and community-oriented redevelopment.
Experts from institutions, universities, and heritage organisations examined how these sites can remain relevant while preserving their industrial legacy.
The initiative marks a first step toward stronger international collaboration on cement industrial heritage in Asia and Western Europe.
