In Residence - Design Dialogues The IN Residence project is about design culture, taken as a process for organizing creative resourc

IN Residence promotes cultural events aimed at creating a dialogue between internationally renown young designers and students. IN Residence would like the protagonists to get involved in a debate investigating processes, concepts and meanings that anticipate the actual creation of a project. IN Residence is a project that contributes to contemporary debate about design, proposing conversation as

a privileged means of analysis and further study. IN Residence offers an alternative experience for learning, study and thinking capable of smoothly bringing together realms of knowledge generally kept separate. IN Residence promotes contemporary design research through a set of closely correlated activities: an annual theme-oriented workshop, talks, exhibitions and a string of publications.

The IN Residence Design Workshop #19: “Metabolic Scenarios” unfolds through the research-driven practices of Designer-Tutors Johanna Seelemann and Nicolas Zanoni.

Blurring the boundaries between functional object and sculpture, Zanoni brings a critical lens to material transformation. For years, he has focused on polystyrene, treating it not as industrial waste, but as a conceptual resource.
Through intense research and intuitive experimentation, stacking, burning, and heat-pressing, he transforms discarded matter into dense, marbled surfaces reminiscent of lava stone.
This practice reframes recycling as a sophisticated, material-driven design process, revealing the hidden aesthetic and architectural potential within industrial refuse.

His work is a perfect reflection of a “Metabolic Scenarios”, exploring how waste can be critically reconfigured into regenerative, noble forms.

For IN Residence Design Workshop #19, the curatorial theme “Metabolic Scenarios” unfolds through the research-driven practices of Johanna Seelemann and Nicolas Zanoni.

Blurring the line between functional object and sculpture, Zanoni transforms everyday industrial materials into playful, poetic creations. Through intuitive, hands-on processes, stacking, burning, weaving, and folding, he explores material limits while embracing improvisation, accident, and surprise.
Each piece carries traces of its making, inviting tactile engagement and personal connection, turning functional objects into intimate, sculptural experiences.

His work questions conventional material value and redefines recycling as both ecological and artistic, transforming discarded matter into meaningful design. Zanoni’s approach offers a powerful lens for “Metabolic Scenarios”, exploring how industrial and ordinary materials can become new, regenerative forms.

For IN Residence Design Workshop #19, the curatorial theme “Metabolic Scenarios” will be expanded through the research-driven practice of Johanna Seelemann.

Seelemann’s work operates as a critical inquiry into the anthropocentric systems that shape our material world. Rather than producing isolated objects, her practice investigates the hidden narratives embedded in everyday matter, proposing a design methodology that recognises the agency of the non-human, from botanical life to geological cycles.

Her approach challenges traditional timelines of consumption by embracing seasonality, decay, and regeneration as essential design parameters. By doing so, she opens pathways toward adaptive, regenerative, and future-oriented urban imaginaries.

Projects such as Vitrum and Leuchterspinne exemplify this approach. Vitrum transforms recycled Icelandic glass into unique, tactile objects that preserve imperfections and maintain future recyclability, exploring both material and cultural potential. Leuchterspinne reinterprets the traditional wooden chandelier of the Erzgebirge, combining local artisan techniques with contemporary design to preserve craftsmanship and inspire future makers.
Through this lens, the city and its materials become a living ecosystem, where design acts as a tool for resilience, coexistence, and ecological attunement.

At MACRO, Seelemann will guide participants in observing the city not as a static backdrop but as a dynamic field of forces in continuous transformation.

Dedicated to the work of Austrian designer Anna Resei, this new volume is part of the IN Residence Monograph Series, exploring the vision and creative approach of a new generation of contemporary designers.

As part of IN Residence Design Residency #4, Austrian designer Anna Resei was invited, together with French designer Ferréol Babin, to develop a new project responding to the curatorial theme “Enigmatic Refractions.”

For the outcomes of her residency, Anna collaborated with Vetralia Collectible , a Venice-based collectible design atelier renowned for its expertise in high-end Venetian glass manufacturing, to create two unique sculptural mirrors.

These works are currently on view until November 2nd, at the Venice Design Biennial , within the exhibition Extinction / Salvation – Glass at SPARC* – Spazio Arte Contemporanea.

A glimpse into Anna Resei’s Drift: Enigmatic Refractions, showcased in the dedicated glass section of the 5th edition of Venice Design Biennial group exhibition “Extinction / Salvation”, curated by Luca Berta and Francesca Giubilei.

This new body of work, created in collaboration with the artisanal expertise of Vetralia Collectible  , is the outcome of IN Residence’s Design Residency #4. It highlights the power of design to both innovate time-honoured crafts while questioning the very essence of the design object itself.

The exhibition runs from September 5 to November 2, 2025.

Anna Resei – Drift: Enigmatic Refractions

The perfectly circular mirror reimagines reflection as an ever-changing experience. Surrounded by layers of opalescent, hand-cast Venetian glass fragments, it scatters light and color, producing shifting images that reveal and conceal. This interplay of traditional craft and conceptual design turns the mirror into a dynamic surface, inviting viewers to explore multiple realities in a single glance.

Created in collaboration with Vetralia Collectible   on show from September 5 – November 2, 2025 at Venice Design Biennial – Extinction / Salvation – Glass.

The works mark the outcome of IN Residence’s Design Residency #4, curated by Barbara Brondi & Marco Rainò.

Anna Resei – Drift: Enigmatic Refractions

The vertical rectangular mirror transforms a familiar object into a conceptual-sculptural medium. Framed by densely colored, soft-edged Venetian glass fragments, it distorts and filters light like shards of thought or memory. Each overlapping piece, crafted with centuries-old glassmaking techniques in collaboration with Vetralia Collectible  , creates a polyphonic surface of tension and perceptual ambiguity.

On show from September 5 – November 2, 2025 at Venice Design Biennial – Extinction / Salvation – Glass.
