Over the past few years, Dr Shabbir has been training alongside the Surgeons of RWI, building both skill and confidence in his craft.

Now, he’s taken that experience even further.

“I’ve moved to Zanzibar and have been working here as a general surgeon for the past year. Every day, I’m applying the skills I developed with RWI. As I continue this journey, I’m also sharing my cases with Dr Pusic and Dr Martina, learning and growing with each step.”
- Dr Shabbir

A powerful reminder of how training, mentorship, and dedication can carry impact far beyond borders.
He plans to continue on this journey and become a Plastic / Reconstructive Surgeon. This is why the women of RWI do what they do.!!!

Bringing microsurgery training directly to the next generation of reconstructive surgeons.

Through Reconstructing Women International, we’ve been able to host hands-on microsurgery simulation workshops in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (Muhimbili National Hospital) and Nairobi, Kenya (Kenyatta National Hospital). Using portable 3D-printed microscopes created by Dr. Samuel
Poore from the University of Wisconsin, trainees are able to practice fundamental microsurgical techniques in a hands-on learning environment.

These simulation sessions make it possible to bring practical microsurgery training to more surgeons, helping build local capacity and expand access to reconstructive care.

Grateful to the faculty, residents, and trainees who made these workshops so meaningful.

In Dar es Salaam, a 17-year-old girl arrived after a motor vehicle accident with a severe fracture to her lower leg and exposed bone. Injuries like this often require complex microsurgery…care that is unavailable in many parts of the world and frequently results in amputation.

For this young patient, that might have been the outcome. Instead, the RWI surgical team performed a delicate procedure, transferring muscle and skin from her back along with its blood vessels and reconnecting it to her leg using microsurgery. The operation was a success.

RWI has spent years working alongside local surgeons to teach and expand microsurgical skills in Tanzania. A key partner in this effort is Dr. Edwin Moringo, who has collaborated and trained with Dr. Andrea Pusic and the RWI team for more than a decade.

This partnership is more than surgical training - it is a lasting collaboration that is changing what is possible for patients and giving young people like this girl a chance to keep their limbs and their futures.

🕊️🤍

Two teams of RWI surgeons.
Countless lives changed.

After impactful weeks in Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, our surgeons come together in Nairobi for one more week of life-changing surgeries and hands-on training. 💙

A quick coffee at the airport ☕, then straight back to work at Kenyatta National Hospital.

We’re so grateful for their skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

Two teams. One shared mission: restoring hope, dignity, and health- together.

M.O.U Official Signing Strengthening the Relationship:

Yesterday marked a truly inspiring moment as Dr. Andrea Pusic of Reconstructing Women International met with the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Dr. Delilah Charles Kimambo.

Both remarkable advocates for women in healthcare, they officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding, strengthening the partnership between Reconstructing Women International and Muhimbili National Hospital. This agreement reinforces a shared commitment to expanding surgical support and mentorship at Muhimbili -one of the largest public hospitals in Tanzania.

There are currently seven surgical residents in the program, and over the past five years the impact has been extraordinary. Together, they have helped drive a meaningful shift -building surgical capacity, strengthening training pathways, and supporting the next generation of surgeons.

With a strong focus on improving care for women and girls, Reconstructing Women International and the leadership at Muhimbili are deeply aligned in vision and direction.
This is truly something to Celebrate!

Repost .sarah.von.isenburg : An evening dedicated to strength, dignity and solidarity.

In Turin, inspiring women from around the world came together to raise awareness and support reconstructive care for women in need.

Through medical missions, education and global collaboration,
Reconstructing Women International (RWI) helps restore not only bodies — but confidence, independence and hope.

Because every woman deserves access to reconstructive surgery.
Because together we can change lives.

Grateful for meaningful conversations, shared commitment and the power of women supporting women. ✨
