CINE HISTORY #249: Mountaineering Film Today

Mention must be made of the unexpected and rather curious Tupendeo – One Mountain, Two Stories (2016), a beautiful short by the Swiss director Robert Steiner. An intriguing tale triggered by a chance find: in 2015, intent on reaching the summit of Tupendeo, in the Himalayas of Kashmir (India), the climbers Stephan Siegrist and Thomas Senf found a piece of rope used by another climber for his descent.
On making enquiries, they discovered they had ended up in a place struck by tragedy many years ago.

CINE HISTORY #248: Mountaineering Film Today

Also featuring porters (in this case those currently active on the Tatra Mountains, and not those of the Himalayas), the Slovak director Pavol Barabáš brought Freedom Under Load to the screen in 2016; an excellent film even if not directly about mountaineering, it opens a window onto a European reality that is still little known outside the local context.

KRONOSHOCK by Ignasi López Fàbregas (Spain, 2026)

Kronoshock is thought-provoking, creative and entertaining. In less than ten minutes, it summarises the evolution of mountaineering over the decades, its goals and challenges, but above all its impact on nature. With humour and irony, it invites the audience to consider when and where we lost our way and what we can do to find our way back to the summit.

CINE HISTORY #247: Mountaineering Film Today

The Australian feature film Sherpa (2015) by Jennifer Peedom, intended to focus on a brawl that had occurred in 2013 between a number of European climbers and a group of Sherpas on the foothills of Everest and explore the relationship between these two very different worlds and cultures, centring on the Sherpas’ point of view.
Instead, it captured the tragedy of 16 April 2014 when an enormous ice block crashed down onto the climbing route, killing sixteen Sherpas.
It provoked a drastic reappraisal of their role in the Everest support industry as they united in fear, anger and grief.

Le Chant des Forêts by Vincent Munier (France, 2025)

We have declared war on nature, but we will lose the battle. Nonetheless, this film gives us hope and shows us that it is not too late to reconnect with what truly matters. Seen through the eyes of three generations, challenging a society that has made speed and performance its cardinal virtues, Le Chant des Forêts invites us to rediscover patience, slowness and silence, and to cultivate the transmission of knowledge with poetry, wisdom and sensitivity. Vincent Munier teaches us to open our eyes, but above all, our ears. He invites us to marvel at the simple things before and below us. There is no need to go to the other side of the world: it is enough to enter the first forest within reach and listen to its song. All of us can do this, thus putting an end to the war and making peace both with nature and ourselves.

CINE HISTORY #246: Mountaineering Film Today

Autana, by Britain’s Alastair Lee, which shows Leo Houlding, Sean Leary and Jason Pickles tackling an adventurous first ascent of the east wall of a Venezuelan tepui (the Cerro Autana, no less).

The action beings with a covert journey via military check-points and secret ports through Amazonas State. Our team of clandestine climbers disguised as tourists travel down the Orinoco River to the remote village of Ceguera where they make a traumatic psychotropic visit to the local Shaman to gain access to the sacred mountain. From here sweltering humidity, porter chaos and an assortment of jungle nastiest are just a part of this spectacular journey of self-discovery and big wall hunting.

Follow our team of redoubtable characters as they find their way up the jungle infested rock face as they are amazed not only at the climbing but a luxury wall camp in the incredible Autana Cave system just below the summit of the tepuy (highest elevated cave system in the world).

Autana is an adventure unlike any other - adventure film making takes another step into the unknown with superb results. Original, experimental, entertaining and visually stunning.

CHAMPIONS OF THE GOLDEN VALLEY by Ben Sturgulewski (Afghanistan, Germany, USA)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXINppZwWro

Ben Sturgulewski’s film unfolds in flashback, telling the story of Afghan skier Alisha Farhang and his efforts to introduce skiing to his mountain village. Rooted in respect for local values, his project was met with enthusiasm and acceptance. It also fostered unity between traditionally hostile groups and opened space for the inclusion of girls and women.

The Taliban’s victory abruptly halts this progress, forcing a swift escape. Despite the chaos, Farhang and his family manage to flee. Their journey leads them to a small town in Saxony, where he falls into a deep depression. Gradually, by focusing on the needs of his children, he begins to rediscover hope. And elements of his work continue to live on in the village he left behind.

Told in striking images and coherent sequences, the film moves quickly and carries contemporary relevance—especially in light of today’s complex migration realities in Germany. It offers a deeper understanding of the experiences faced by refugees.
