Last week in Trieste, Italy, the workshop “Mani in Pasta” brought together researchers to define a clear scientific vision and identify the writing team for a SPARC proposal.

SPARC (Scientific Projects using Ocean Drilling Archives) proposals are part of the IODP³ programme and focus on extracting new scientific insights from existing ocean drilling materials and datasets through innovative and interdisciplinary approaches.

The proposal will investigate Antarctic Bottom Water formation and the slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during past warm periods. The project aims to maximize the scientific value of existing drilling data from key deep-water formation sites in both hemispheres through consistent new analytical approaches and the integration of machine learning techniques.

By improving our understanding of hemispheric phase relationships, this work will contribute to better forecasting of future climate scenarios in our warming world.

Yesterday evening, in the beautiful setting of the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, we had the pleasure of hosting our townhall meeting together with our colleagues.

We opened the evening with a welcome from our host, Bernhard Plunger (Austrian Academy of Sciences). This was followed by an overview of Austria’s participation in ICDP by Christian Köberl (University of Vienna), and a presentation on Austria’s role in IODP and IODP3 by Michi Strasser (University of Innsbruck).

Nadine Hallmann (EMA / IODP3 Managing Agency) then shared recent news and perspectives on IODP3, followed by updates on ICDP from Marco Bohnhoff (ICDP).

Around 200 members of the scientific drilling community attended to hear updates, share perspectives, and discuss ongoing work in the field. It was a good opportunity to connect across projects and institutions.

Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed.
