Camposaz

Camposaz The aim of Camposaz is to design and self-build wooden architectural objects for landscape enhancement.

Camposaz is a wood self-construction workshop in 1:1 scale. It started in 2013 with the ambition to promote interaction between disciplines and practitioners dealing with architectural design. The workshop is open to architects, designers, carpenters between 18 and 35 years of age. During the workshop, living in close contact, they have to design and physically construct small wood installations,

based on specific themes, aiming at enhancing the landscape. The team is usually formed by 12 participants led by a tutor and by local carpenters who can assist the construction process. The built project is site specific and it can change according to the conditions in which it is going to be realized. An important aspect of the workshop is the human scale, conceived as the specific scale in which the 1:1 model is implemented within the construction site. Our own body and our manual work should be considered expressive and measuring tools. During the workshop design and constructions are tight processes and proceed in parallel. The aim of the initiative is to condense in a unique experience immaterial and material aspects of the constructions process, enhancing the entire creative process. Knowledge sharing and adaptability are necessary conditions for a successful result. Camposaz is an open platform without hierarchies and fixed roles: it is an open source initiative in which everyone can bring his own contribution in the development of a process that has no pre-established direction. In this sense, Camposaz promotes different point of views and new design approaches in problematic urban locations, with the intention to develop a sort of “instinctive architecture” with no prejudices and with a lot of collaborative improvisation.

Rovereto, Manifattura Tabacchi
03-12 July 2026

The workshop, supported by Trentino Sviluppo, will focus on the outdoor space of the former Manifattura Tabacchi. After being abandoned, the factory has been transformed into a sustainability hub dedicated to researchers, start-ups, and collective energies. The inner courtyard is now a parking space, but has great potential to become a hub for local culture, meetings, and social gatherings, just a few steps from the village’s centre.

The Paper Log House (Shelter for Hikers) was developed through the collaboration between the Municipality of Modigliana, the University of Bologna and Shigeru Ban, 2014 Pritzker Prize Laureate, whose work bridges material experimentation with a commitment to emergency architecture. The project aims to provide a minimal shelter along the Apennine trails after the 2023 floods, within the festival. Camposaz supported the workshop as a technical partner, overseeing on-site tutoring and coordination. Built in three days in Panigheto, the structure rests on a modular base of fruit crates ballasted with sandbags, supporting a timber platform and a frame of cardboard tubes.
Designed to be achievable with essential tools and shared responsibilities, the build guided students from drawings to 1:1 decisions as the structure grew. The name recalls the Paper Log House system: a lightweight grammar in which paper and wood become hospitality.

Camposaz 52:52 lands in the mountain landscape of Tonezza del Cimone for a special edition titled “alimentAZIONI – New nourishment for the future of the community.”
The workshop will focus on the outdoor space of the Municipal Library. Today it appears as an empty lawn, but one from which it is possible to enjoy the view of the Dolomites. The garden holds great potential to become a hub for local culture, meeting and social gathering, just a few steps from the village center.

Vicenza, Ex Centrale del Latte
22-31 May 2026

The Camposaz 51:51 edition lands in Vicenza to breathe new life into the Ex Centrale del Latte. Once a symbol of industrial production, this site is being transformed into a vibrant multifunctional hub for social innovation, co-working, and culture. It is a strategic regeneration project that aims to return a vital space to the district.
During this 10-day workshop, we will focus our energy on the outdoor spaces, specifically the main square. Our goal is to transform this area into a versatile “urban stage”: a place for events and performances, but also a welcoming garden where people can meet, socialize, find shade and enjoy the community atmosphere.

La Svolta grew out of the encounter between Camposaz and La Svolta, a family-run organic farm on the hills of Castelvetro di Modena, along the route leading to the Sanctuary of Puianello and beside a bio-lake under construction. In a context unusual for us, yet particularly fertile, the workshop developed within a productive landscape open to the public, where nature, agricultural activities, and everyday movement coexist. In continuity with Camposaz’s approach, grounded in participatory design and self-build as tools for activating the landscape, the project took shape as a tea pavilion intended to host activities and collective moments. Circular in plan, the structure stems from the idea of creating a space able to foster interaction, rest, and sharing. Its load-bearing system is arranged along the outer perimeter, leaving the interior completely open and usable, while the roof folds towards the central void, conceived as the core of the space and a possible point of gathering. From a constructive point of view, the project is based on the development of a sectional module which, through a tension chain anchored to the foundations, makes it possible to generate the inward cantilever and the upper joint, giving shape to a geometry formed by the intersection of two triangles. The result is an open, unified, and recognisable space, designed to accommodate the farm’s activities and the moments of encounter that accompany its public life.

In August 2025, Camposaz landed at the former Legler textile factory for its 48:48 workshop with the challenging goal of reactivating a forgotten industrial space through participatory wooden construction. Supported by Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione Legler, and the Architects’ Association of Bergamo, the project was part of the “Luoghi da rigenerare” initiative, envisioning the site’s future as a “Fabbrica della Cultura.”

Despite the unpredictable weather, the team lived and worked together on site, fully embracing Camposaz’s collaborative spirit. The intervention introduced a series of wooden portals that guide visitors toward a terrace overlooking the Brembo River, reshaping spatial perceptions along the way. On the terrace, a shaded gallery with brise-soleil elements unfolds as a multifunctional structure that serves as a stage, seating area and exhibition space and invites people to pause, observe and reconnect with the place.

The woven larch pattern designed by the participants recalls denim jeans textile, paying homage to the site’s heritage. Camposaz 48:48 symbolically laid the first beam for the site’s regeneration, connecting together architecture, memory and community to reopen the ex-Legler as a living space once again.

Ph: Participants,

Camposaz, in collaboration with Inabita, organized a self-build workshop in Loro Piceno (MC) as part of the “Aule Verdi” project. The initiative connected young people with the Val di Fiastra. The workshop concluded a two-year co-design process involving schools, families, local stakeholders, and the University of Camerino, creating a network of open-air classrooms that bring students closer to local ecosystems and the landscape.
The Earth Classroom, in Loro Piceno, is a panoramic platform with three accessible planting beds where students and groups can work the soil, observe the landscape, and learn through hands-on activities.
The Water Classroom, in Colmurano, Fonte Allungo, is a playful, interactive space where water flows through basins and a small watermill, with seating and a blackboard oriented toward the panorama.
The Green Classrooms are spaces to pause, explore with the senses, and connect with both nature and community, offering children, families, and teachers the chance to learn, discover local knowledge, and grow together.

Place: Monastero (MC)
Date: 11-20  july 2025
Partners: and everyone who helped make the workshop possible
Ph: Participants,

Monastero, a small hamlet of Cessapalombo (MC), is a village marked by depopulation and the 2016 earthquake, which comes back to life during the summer thanks to pilgrims on the Grande Anello dei Sibillini and the Cammino Francescano della Marca.
Here we designed and built, through a collective workshop, four pieces of wooden urban furniture: interventions conceived for the landscape and for those who pass through it, capable of activating spaces for rest, meeting, and sharing.
An entrance to the village, a place of daily passage. Two panoramic platforms open to the landscape, between mountains and horizon. A collective terrace, welcoming and once again becoming a meeting place. A picnic area brought back to life, at the end of the village.
It was a process made of observation, discussion, and shared work: days full of words, music, and moments of collective reflection, around the theme of self-building in fragile territories and with the people who live there.
The inhabitants participated, supported, and welcomed the workshop, offering their time and trust.
