Non ogni recupero inizia con un’immersione.
A volte inizia con una segnalazione – e oggi questa segnalazione è arrivata da una fonte forse inaspettata: due pescatori sportivi.

Noi di Ghost Diving Lombardy Lakes abbiamo recuperato ancora una volta materiale di rete dal Lago d’Iseo. Il ritrovamento è avvenuto nella zona davanti a Paratico – un’area che non è considerata un classico sito di immersione e dove queste reti sarebbero probabilmente rimaste inosservate ancora a lungo.
Che siano stati proprio dei pescatori a indicarci la presenza della rete può sembrare contraddittorio a prima vista. In realtà non lo è affatto. Pescatori professionisti e sportivi trascorrono moltissimo tempo sul lago e dispongono dell’esperienza e degli strumenti giusti per individuare strutture insolite sul fondale – cose che magari fino al giorno prima non c’erano.

Ed è proprio per questo che il rispetto reciproco, il dialogo e una buona collaborazione tra tutti coloro che vivono il lago sono così preziosi. La tutela delle nostre acque funziona al meglio quando si lavora insieme.
Un grande grazie quindi ai due pescatori per la loro segnalazione e naturalmente anche al nostro team per il lavoro svolto oggi sott’acqua.

Not every recovery starts with a dive.
Sometimes it starts with a report — and today that report came from a perhaps unexpected source: two recreational fishermen.
We at Ghost Diving Lombardy Lakes once again recovered net material from Lake Iseo today. The nets were located in the area off Paratico — a place that is not considered a typical dive site and where this debris would likely have remained undiscovered for a long time.
At first, it may sound contradictory that fishermen were the ones who alerted us to the nets. But in reality, it makes perfect sense. Professional and recreational fishermen spend countless hours on the lake and have both the experience and the equipment needed to detect unusual structures on the lakebed — things that may not even have been there the day before.
That is exactly why mutual respect, communication, and good cooperation between everyone who uses the lake are so valuable. Protecting our waters works best when we work together.
A huge thank you to the two fishermen for their report — and of course to our team for today’s work underwater.

Non ogni intervento inizia direttamente con un recupero. A volte è necessario prima un’immersione di perlustrazione – soprattutto quando si sospetta la presenza di molte reti o le condizioni sono difficili.
È proprio quello che abbiamo fatto questo fine settimana nella Baia delle Sirene, tra Garda e Torri del Benaco.
Il risultato: nessuna rete tesa e pericolosa – ma una quantità considerevole di vecchi resti di reti, che da anni si sono avvolti intorno alle rocce. Al momento non rappresentano un pericolo immediato, ma a lungo termine sono una fonte di microplastiche.
➡️ È chiaro: torneremo – con l’obiettivo di recuperare il più possibile. 💪

Preparation is everything 🌊
Not every operation starts directly with a recovery. Sometimes a survey dive comes first – especially when many nets are suspected or conditions are challenging.
That’s exactly what we did this weekend in Baia delle Sirene, between Garda and Torri del Benaco.
The result: no standing, hazardous nets – but a considerable amount of old net remnants that have been wrapped around the rocks for years. At the moment they don’t pose an immediate danger, but in the long term they are a source of microplastics.

Le vecchie reti da pesca e le lenze abbandonate non rappresentano solo un pericolo immediato per il rischio di intrappolamento della fauna acquatica, ma costituiscono anche un grave problema ambientale a lungo termine. Con il passare degli anni, questi materiali si degradano progressivamente in particelle sempre più piccole, le cosiddette microplastiche. Queste entrano nel ciclo dell’acqua, vengono ingerite dagli organismi più piccoli e si accumulano lungo la catena alimentare. Particolarmente critico è il fatto che molte di queste reti sono realizzate in materiali plastici resistenti come il nylon, che si decompone molto lentamente – un ciclo silenzioso ma devastante.

Durante l’immersione di oggi, noi di Ghost Diving Lombardy Lakes Lakes siamo stati operativi al Lago di Lecco, nella zona di Valmadrera. Lungo una parete rocciosa abbiamo effettuato una ricerca mirata di materiali abbandonati, riuscendo a recuperare diversi residui, tra cui frammenti di reti di vario tipo, lenze e ami. Parte del materiale era già fortemente colonizzato da piccole cozze, segno evidente della lunga permanenza sul fondo del lago.
Al termine dell’intervento abbiamo recuperato circa dieci chilogrammi di materiale. La ricerca si è svolta fino a una profondità di circa 20 metri e si è conclusa con successo dopo poco meno di un’ora.
Ogni metro di rete recuperato e ogni lenza rimossa rappresentano un piccolo ma importante passo per la tutela dei nostri ecosistemi acquatici.

Old fishing nets and abandoned fishing lines are not only an immediate hazard due to the risk of entanglement for aquatic life, but they also pose a serious long-term environmental threat. Over the years, these materials gradually break down into increasingly smaller particles, known as microplastics. These particles enter the water cycle, are ingested by small organisms, and accumulate throughout the food chain. Particularly concerning is the fact that many of these nets are made from durable plastics such as nylon, which decompose very slowly - a silent but devastating cycle.

During today’s dive, we from Ghost Diving Lombardy Lakes were operating at Lake Lecco in the Valmadrera area. Along a steep wall, we conducted a targeted search for abandoned materials and were able to recover various remnants, including fragments of different types of nets as well as fishing lines and hooks. Some of the material was already heavily overgrown with small mussels, indicating how long it had been lying on the lakebed.
In total, we recovered approximately ten kilograms of material. The search was carried out to a depth of about 20 meters and was successfully completed after just under one hour.
Every meter of net recovered and every line removed is a small but important step toward protecting our aquatic ecosystems.

Le reti fantasma sono una conseguenza silenziosa, spesso invisibile, della pesca moderna. Sono fatte di materiali plastici resistenti, progettate per essere efficienti – ed è proprio questa efficienza che diventa un problema quando vengono p***e. Ciò che un tempo era pensato per catturare, continua a catturare. Giorni, mesi, a volte decenni. Senza controllo. Senza scopo. Senza pietà.

Tra rocce e piante acquatiche, a profondità che pochi bagnanti possono immaginare, giacciono: reti abbandonate, insignificanti in apparenza eppure letali.
Così ci siamo imbattuti ancora una volta in una di queste reti. Incastrata tra le pietre, quasi invisibile nella luce diffusa. E poi lo abbiamo visto: un piccolo persico. Si era impigliato nel nylon sottile. Più cercava di liberarsi, più le maglie si stringevano attorno al suo piccolo corpo.

Abbiamo provato a salvarlo. Ogni gesto sott’acqua è lento, attento – ma per lui il nostro aiuto è arrivato troppo tardi.

Era solo un piccolo pesce. Uno tra tanti, si potrebbe dire. Ma in quel momento non era “uno tra tanti”. Era un essere vivente che nuotava, che cercava cibo, che faceva parte di questo fragile ecosistema. La sua morte è stata causata dall’uomo.
Le reti fantasma uccidono in silenzio. Intrappolano pesci che a loro volta attirano predatori più grandi, che rimangono anch’essi impigliati. E mentre sulla terraferma nessuno se ne accorge, sotto la superficie cresce un cimitero invisibile.
Questo piccolo persico rappresenta tutti gli altri – i lucci, le anguille, i persici e i gamberi che in queste reti muoiono tra sofferenze. Ogni animale che non viene visto, non viene contato, non viene pianto.

Facevi parte di questo lago, del suo equilibrio, della sua silenziosa bellezza. Non siamo riusciti a salvarti – ma questa rete non ucciderà più, altri come te.�E continueremo a immergerci, a recuperare, a raccontare.
Perché ogni rete recuperata è un frammento di habitat restituito alla vita.

Ghost nets are a silent, often invisible consequence of modern fishing. They are made of durable plastic materials and designed for efficiency – and it is precisely this efficiency that becomes a problem when they are lost. What was once meant to catch continues to catch. For days, months, sometimes decades. Without control. Without purpose.

Without mercy.
Between rocks and aquatic plants, at depths that few swimmers can imagine, they lie: abandoned nets, seemingly insignificant yet deadly.
And so, once again, we came across one of these nets. Trapped between stones, almost invisible in the diffuse light. And then we saw it: a small perch. It was trapped in the thin nylon. The more it tried to free itself, the tighter the mesh closed around its small body.

We tried to save it. Every movement underwater is slow and careful – but for this little fish, our help came too late.

It was only a small fish. One among many, one might say. But in that moment it was not “one among many.” It was a living being that swam, that searched for food, that was part of this fragile ecosystem. Its death was caused by human activity.
Ghost nets kill silently. They trap fish, which in turn attract larger predators that also become entangled. And while no one on land notices, beneath the surface an invisible graveyard grows.
This small perch stands for all the others – the pike, the eels, the perch and the crayfish that die painfully in these nets. Every animal that is not seen, is not counted, is not mourned.

You were part of this lake, part of its balance, part of its quiet beauty. We could not save you – but this net will no longer kill others like you.
And we will continue to dive and to tell these stories.
Because every net we recover is a fragment of habitat returned to life.

Durante un’immersione di sorveglianza finalizzata alla tutela dell’ambiente sommerso, due subacquei del nostro team hanno effettuato un intervento di recupero sul fondale di Toscolano Maderno. L’operazione ha portato alla rimozione di reti da pesca vecchie e recenti. Si sono presentate intrecciate tra loro insieme a cordame ed esche di vario tipo.

Il materiale era concentrato in un unico grande ammasso sul fondale e presentava ancora gavitelli, segno di una perdita o abbandono relativamente recente. Il cordame più datato, indurito dal tempo e dalla permanenza in acqua, ha reso le operazioni di taglio e sezionamento particolarmente complesse, richiedendo attenzione e tempi più lunghi per garantire la sicurezza dei sub e l’efficacia del recupero.

Nel complesso sono stati rimossi oltre 100 metri di reti, per un peso totale di circa 12 kg. Questi materiali rappresentavano una seria minaccia per la fauna lacustre e per l’equilibrio dell’ecosistema. Un intervento concreto per la salvaguardia dei fondali del Lago di Garda.

During a surveillance dive aimed at protecting the underwater environment, two divers from our team carried out a recovery operation on the seabed of Toscolano Maderno. The operation led to the removal of old and recent fishing nets. They were found tangled together with ropes and various types of bait.

The material was concentrated in a single large mass on the seabed and still had buoys attached to it, a sign that it had been lost or abandoned relatively recently. The older ropes, hardened by time and exposure to water, made cutting and sectioning operations particularly complex, requiring greater care and more time to ensure the divers safety and the effectiveness of the recovery.

In total, over 100 metres of nets were removed, in total of approximately 12 kg. These materials posed a serious threat to lake fauna and the balance of the ecosystem. This was a concrete intervention to protect the seabed of Lake Garda.
