Engera

Engera is a non-profit association of doctors, nurses and volunteers. Our mission is to bring medical, social and humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia.

The name Engera refers to Ethiopian bread, made from teff flour, a cereal native to the Ethiopian highlands and considered a staple food in Ethiopia. Engera cooperates in the Guraghe region, on the central plateau of Ethiopia, about 220 km southwest of Addis Ababa. Over the years, Engera has carried out more than 30 missions in the area, bringing medical and humanitarian assistance. The total popu

lation covered by the clinics could be estimated at about 100,000 beneficiaries of which 35% are children under 5 years old. The objectives of our organisation are to provide:
1. financial support to guarantee the health service
2. direct medical support with foreign doctors and nurses
3. continued medical education

In rural Ethiopia, reaching healthcare can mean hours of walking. We support 7 health facilities in the Gurage Zone and South West Shoa, working in partnership with the Ethiopian Catholic Church to strengthen access to skilled care closer to home.

Working in rural health centers in Ethiopia is demanding. Staff manage long days with limited resources, and opportunities for skills development are limited. Most accredited training is still based in larger towns, which makes completing Continuing Education Units difficult for rural health workers who need them to maintain their licenses.

This week, trainers from Welkite University’s CPD Center travelled to Emdibir and ran accredited sessions for 26 health workers from the centers we support. Holding the training close to the centers meant participants could join without long travel or leaving their facilities short‑staffed.

The first modules covered diabetes, hypertension and asthma, all of which are becoming more common in the area. Upcoming sessions will focus on infectious diseases and antimicrobial use.

We will continue sharing updates as the programme progresses.

Lavorare nei centri sanitari rurali in Etiopia è impegnativo. Il personale affronta giornate lunghe con risorse limitate e ha poche opportunità di aggiornare le proprie competenze. Gran parte della formazione accreditata si svolge ancora nelle città più grandi, il che rende difficile per gli operatori sanitari delle aree rurali completare i Continuing Education Units necessari per mantenere la licenza.

Questa settimana i formatori del CPD Center dell’Università di Welkite si sono recati a Emdibir e hanno svolto sessioni accreditate per 26 operatori dei centri che sosteniamo. Offrire la formazione vicino alle strutture ha permesso ai partecipanti di prendere parte senza lunghi spostamenti e senza lasciare i servizi sotto organico.

I primi moduli hanno riguardato diabete, ipertensione e asma, condizioni sempre più diffuse nella zona. I prossimi incontri saranno dedicati alle malattie infettive e all’uso degli antimicrobici.

Ecco Salam Guluma e il suo nuovo arrivato. Salam vive vicino a Zizencho e ha fatto nascere qui tutti e quattro i suoi figli.

Zizencho è aperto da oltre 15 anni ed è diventato il cuore della comunità. È stato il primissimo progetto sostenuto da Engera, ma sono le persone che ci lavorano ad averlo trasformato in ciò che è oggi. Il fatto che Salam continui a tornare per la salute sua e della sua famiglia mostra quanta fiducia abbia nel team e nelle cure che riceve.

Speriamo che tutti i suoi figli crescano sapendo che questo è un luogo su cui potranno sempre contare.

Here is Salam Guluma with her newborn. Salam lives near Zizencho and has given birth to all four of her children here.

The Zizencho Health Centre has been open for more than 15 years and has become the heart of the community. It was Engera’s very first project, but it is the people who work there who have made it what it is today. The fact that Salam continues to return for her own health and that of her family shows just how much trust she has in the team and in the care she receives.

We hope all her children grow up knowing that this is a place they can always rely on.

Le schede per il referendum sulla giustizia del 22-23 marzo 2026 sono arrivate all’Ospedale di Attat, nella zona rurale del Gurage in Etiopia, dove due medici italiani stanno trascorrendo tre mesi di lavoro a servizio della comunità locale.

Anche in un contesto remoto, tra giornate cliniche intense e servizi limitati, sarà possibile partecipare al voto nazionale. Ora che la busta è arrivata, sarà possibile compilare la scheda e rispedirla nei tempi previsti per gli italiani temporaneamente all’estero.

È un piccolo ma significativo promemoria: lavorare all’estero, anche in un ospedale rurale, non significa rinunciare alla possibilità di prendere parte a un momento cruciale della nostra democrazia

Stiamo realizzando una valutazione dei bisogni nei centri sanitari che sosteniamo, per comprendere meglio la loro capacità di offrire cure materne e neonatali sicure e di alta qualità.

L’indagine è guidata da Optima Consult, una società di consulenza etiope indipendente specializzata in ricerca sui sistemi sanitari. Come spiegano:

“Gli operatori di questi centri sono profondamente impegnati verso le loro comunità. Il nostro ruolo è ascoltare, imparare dalla loro esperienza e individuare opportunità a livello di sistema che rafforzino la qualità dell’assistenza.”

L’analisi si concentra su quattro aree chiave:

• gestione del centro sanitario

• servizi clinici materni e neonatali

• capacità di farmacia e laboratorio

• supporto distrettuale e sistemi di riferimento

Attraverso osservazioni e dialoghi con il personale, Optima sta raccogliendo evidenze che aiuteranno Engera a identificare lacune pratiche e rafforzare i servizi per mamme e neonati nelle comunità che serviamo.

Questo lavoro è possibile grazie al generoso sostegno di un donatore impegnato a far progredire la salute materna e neonatale.

We are carrying out a needs assessment in the health centres we support, to better understand their capacity to provide safe, high‑quality maternal and newborn care.

The study is led by Optima Consult, an independent Ethiopian consultancy specialising in health systems research. As they explain:

“The staff in these centres are deeply committed to their communities. Our role is to listen, learn from their experience, and identify system‑level opportunities that can strengthen the quality of care.”

The analysis focuses on four key areas:

• management of the health centre
• maternal and newborn clinical services
• pharmacy and laboratory capacity
• district support and referral systems

Through observations and conversations with staff, Optima is gathering evidence that will help Engera identify practical gaps and strengthen services for mothers and newborns in the communities we serve.

Il Shebraber Health Center, nella zona rurale del Gurage in Etiopia, sta passando finalmente a un sistema solare affidabile grazie al generoso sostegno della NextEnergy Foundation

Costruito con il supporto di Engera nel 2014, il centro offre cure essenziali a una comunità rurale di oltre 60.000 persone. I continui blackout hanno spesso costretto le ostetriche ad assistere i parti con le torce e reso inutilizzabili molte attrezzature fondamentali.

The Shebraber Health Center, in the rural Gurage Zone of Ethiopia, is finally transitioning to reliable solar power thanks to the NextEnergy Foundation

Built with Engera’s support in 2014, the center provides essential healthcare to a rural community of over 60,000 people. Frequent power cuts have often forced midwives to assist deliveries by torchlight and made vital equipment unusable during outages.

Solar energy will change all of this.
