Engera

Engera is a non-profit association of doctors, nurses and volunteers. Our mission is to bring medical, social and humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia.

The name Engera refers to Ethiopian bread, made from teff flour, a cereal native to the Ethiopian highlands and considered a staple food in Ethiopia. Engera cooperates in the Guraghe region, on the central plateau of Ethiopia, about 220 km southwest of Addis Ababa. Over the years, Engera has carried out more than 30 missions in the area, bringing medical and humanitarian assistance. The total popu

lation covered by the clinics could be estimated at about 100,000 beneficiaries of which 35% are children under 5 years old. The objectives of our organisation are to provide:
1. financial support to guarantee the health service
2. direct medical support with foreign doctors and nurses
3. continued medical education

Mahalo nui loa 🌺

Last April, our Hawai‘i ‘ohana gathered at Kevin and Sabrina Jardine’s home for a night of food, drinks, and stories. Together, this wonderful community has raised an incredible $40,000 for Engera.

A huge mahalo to Sabrina, Colleen, and Nicole for bringing the evening to life, and to Kevin and Sabrina for opening their home and helping make the event possible.

The funds raised that evening are already supporting healthcare in the Gurage Zone. Health workers now have a vacuum extractor and delivery kit to help make births safer for mothers. We’re also purchasing a baby warmer for Shebraber, supporting infectious disease training closer to home, and expanding Shebraber Health Center so more families can access care.

Mahalo to everyone who came, gave so generously, and made the evening, and all that has come from it, possible. We’re so grateful for your support and for the part you’re playing in strengthening healthcare in the Gurage Zone of Ethiopia. 🌺

All seven health facilities we support now run on solar.

Before, when the grid went down, staff had to scramble to find fuel for an expensive generator. Patients who had travelled for hours could end up waiting half a day for electricity to return before they could get their tests or treatment.

Now, the health centres can provide care 24/7. And at Shebraber Health Centre, the change is clear. Comparing the same quarter last year, the number of patients returning for care has risen from 345 to 1,412 - a four‑fold increase now that the clinic has reliable power and people know they’ll be seen when they arrive. Lab tests conducted are up 42%, and referrals to other facilities are down 24%, as more cases can now be handled on-site.

Investing in the next generation of health professionals by funding scholarships is one of the most powerful things we can do - and stories like Hanan’s below shows exactly why.

My name is Hanan Jebel, and I am from Galeya Rogdha. I grew up here, in this community, and from a young age, I have always dreamed of helping people through healthcare.

I was a hardworking and successful student throughout my school years. Unfortunately, when I was preparing for the university entrance examination, conflict in our area caused the exam to be postponed. The disruption affected our preparation greatly, and I was unable to achieve the score I needed to enter university. Instead of giving up on my dream, I joined college through a diploma program. During my training, I also volunteered with the Red Cross, where I had the opportunity to serve and support people in need. That experience strengthened my desire to work in healthcare.

Today, through this scholarship, my childhood dream of becoming a midwife is finally becoming a reality. Becoming a mother myself has made this dream even more meaningful. Now I understand, not only as a healthcare student but also as a mother, how deeply our community needs proper care, guidance, and support for mothers and newborn babies.

They did it! 🏔️ Paolo and Carlo reached the summit of Monte Emilius!

Meet Paolo and Carlo, two brothers, aged 10 and 9, who took on a huge challenge for Engera!

Inspired by their big sister, who climbed Scafell Pike and Helvellyn after recovering from a serious illness, Paolo and Carlo decided it was their turn. This year they set their sights on Monte Emilius in Italy’s Aosta Valley, a mighty 3,559 metres and their biggest climb yet!

We’re thrilled to share that they’ve raised over £6,000 for Engera, and donations are still coming in.

Every pound will help support Engera’s work with seven health centres in rural Ethiopia, where local health teams provide essential care to their communities, vaccinating children, supporting safer pregnancies, and training nurses and midwives.

A huge thank you to Paolo and Carlo for taking on such an incredible challenge and raising so much for Engera. What an achievement! ❤️

We’re so pleased to share some fantastic news from Zizencho Health Center. Zizencho has been ranked third in the recent laboratory inspection across 233 Health Centers and 31 Hospitals in Central Ethiopia. For a small rural facility, this is a huge achievement and well‑deserved recognition of the entire team's hard work. The team has put real effort into strengthening the lab and making it a place the community can rely on and trust.

Sister Joanna, the Center manager, is already focused on what needs to happen next.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure the 24/7 availability of the Triple Package laboratory service, HIV, HepB and HepC, so the community can access essential diagnostic care whenever they need it. We also plan to expand the laboratory so we can keep improving the services we offer in the years ahead.”

We recently completed the baseline livelihood and nutrition assessment for the Investing in Women: Beekeeping & Nutrition Project in Shebraber Kebele, Enemore Woreda, Gurage Zone.

Over three days, our team visited participating households and sat down with the women to talk about their livelihoods, beekeeping experience, nutrition practices, food security, and role in household income. It was a chance to really listen before the project begins, and it gives us a clear starting point to guide the training and support ahead.

The project will equip 30 women with practical beekeeping skills, starter equipment, and nutrition knowledge. It focuses on improving incomes, supporting better nutrition, and helping women build long-term stability for their families and communities.

Training begins in September, and we look forward to following their progress!

Construction has begun at Shebraber Health Center, a place thousands of families depend on.

Built in 2014, the center now treats nearly 19,000 people each year, and many walk for hours to reach it. The building is no longer big enough for the community it serves, and the lack of space affects both how quickly people can be seen and the privacy staff can offer.

The expansion now underway will add a pharmacy, a storage room, and an emergency room. These new spaces will give staff the room they’ve been missing and offer patients a calmer, more dignified experience.

Sister Meskel shared what this moment means for her team: “This expansion has been a long‑held dream for our health center. Seeing the construction come together is incredibly rewarding. Once completed, it will greatly improve our ability to serve the community by addressing the critical shortage of space that has challenged us every single day.”

Imagine a young bride in the Gurage Zone covered by her veil, accompanied by her Menzet (Ajabi) who are dozens of women carrying all the handmade cultural items and tools that she will use to start her new life.

While sitting on the horse, she starts sobbing, thinking of leaving her childhood home behind. The crowd then gathers, comforting her and letting her know that she is never alone.

This is Azhewegne, a traditional Gurage wedding ceremony. More than a celebration, it reflects a deep commitment to faith, family, and community. In the past, the bride and groom often never met before the wedding. Instead, trust was established through Shimgilina - a formal mediation led by respected elders who meet with both families to discuss lineage, character, and compatibility before agreeing to the marriage.

For several months following the wedding, during the Chagula period, friends and family from the community visit every evening to celebrate with the newlyweds until the bride eventually removes her veil.

At Engera, we work to improve maternal health across the Gurage Zone. But this is not a place where care needs to be taught. We support midwives, strengthen clinics, and expand access to resources by building on an existing tradition where families and communities have long cared for women and supported mothers. We are helping ensure they have the tools and support to continue doing so.
