Engera is a non-profit association of doctors, nurses and volunteers. Our mission is to bring medical, social and humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia.

The name Engera refers to Ethiopian bread, made from teff flour, a cereal native to the Ethiopian highlands and considered a staple food in Ethiopia. Engera cooperates in the Guraghe region, on the central plateau of Ethiopia, about 220 km southwest of Addis Ababa. Over the years, Engera has carried out more than 30 missions in the area, bringing medical and humanitarian assistance. The total population covered by the clinics could be estimated at about 100,000 beneficiaries of which 35% are children under 5 years old. The objectives of our organisation are to provide:
1. financial support to guarantee the health service
2. direct medical support with foreign doctors and nurses
3. continued medical education

Swipe right to see the best motto: “The laboratory is the backbone of healthcare.” 🔬

We found this old photo from one of the health centers we support, and the message still rings true.

Lab teams help health workers make the right diagnosis, from spotting anemia and infections to diagnosing and monitoring malaria, diabetes and HIV. In pregnancy, test results help flag risks and show when a referral is needed.

But labs need reliable power, the right equipment and steady supplies. All the health centers we support now run on solar ☀️ A huge milestone.

Last year, research by Optima Consult highlighted the remaining gaps: reagent stock-outs, and the need for CBC machines and new microscopes at some centers. Our goal is the same standard of diagnostics at every facility we support.

Equipment is only half of it. Labs also need skilled people, so we hope to fund more scholarships in the years ahead.

Enset is an important staple food in southern Ethiopia, especially in the Gurage Zone, where we work.

Although it looks like a banana tree, it doesn’t actually produce edible bananas. Instead, its stem and underground parts are processed to make foods such as kocho, a traditional fermented flatbread.

What is special about enset is its resilience. It can withstand periods of drought and provides a reliable source of food for rural families, making it an important part of local food security.

It’s also a brilliant example of the traditional farming knowledge that has been passed down through generations.

In rural Ethiopia, too many women with breast cancer are diagnosed only once the disease has reached an advanced stage.

A lack of awareness of the early warning signs, as well as limited access to screening and follow-up care, means that women can miss symptoms or wait too long before seeking help.

This year, thanks to funding awarded to Engera UK by the Souter Charitable Trust, we will begin a new breast cancer awareness pilot at Zizencho and Shebraber Health Centers in the Gurage Zone.

The project will work with health workers and communities to improve awareness of the early signs of breast cancer and encourage women to seek medical help if they notice something unusual.

It’s a small pilot to begin with, but if it works well, we hope to introduce it at the other health centers we support.

We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with the NextEnergy Foundation ☀️

Earlier this year, their support helped us install solar power at Shebraber Health Center, giving the centre reliable electricity 24/7 and removing its reliance on expensive diesel generators. Since the installation, returning patients have more than quadrupled, from 345 to 1,412.

Now we’re building on that work with three new solar projects:

☀️ Powering the computer lab at Welkite Middle School
☀️ Powering the computer lab at Zizencho Primary School
💧 Converting the water well at Shebraber Health Center from a fuel-powered generator to solar

At both schools, frequent power cuts interrupt lessons and make it difficult for students to use the computers. Solar power will mean reliable electricity throughout the school day, giving students more opportunity to use their computer labs and develop digital skills.

At Shebraber, solarising the water pump will reduce fuel costs and reliance on diesel, while providing a more reliable water supply for the health centre and surrounding community.

Before training begins for the 30 women taking part in our new beekeeping project in Ethiopia’s Gurage Zone, we carried out a baseline assessment looking at their livelihoods, existing beekeeping experience and family nutrition.

We found out that a third of the women currently have no personal cash income. Sixteen already have some beekeeping experience, but average honey production is low at 2.13 kg per household each year.

The assessment also showed how limited diets are for many of the young children in these families. Of the 30 mothers interviewed, 28 reported that their young child had eaten foods from fewer than four food groups the previous day. Diets relied heavily on staples such as enset and maize, with limited eggs, dairy products, legumes, fruit and vegetables.

That's why nutrition is part of the project too. Alongside receiving improved beekeeping equipment, the women will take part in practical beekeeping training and maternal and child nutrition sessions. We hope that if the women can produce and sell more honey, the extra income will also make it easier for families to include a wider range of foods in their diets.

Training begins this month, and over the coming months we'll see what changes for the women and their families.

For Filippo Bianco, Engera Board Member, it started with a photograph of a newborn baby and grew into a long-term commitment to improving access to healthcare in rural Ethiopia.

Over the years, he has visited the communities we work with, seen the challenges facing rural health centres first-hand, and watched Engera’s work grow and evolve.

We asked him what first drew him to Engera, what he has learned along the way, and what keeps him involved today.

Last week, 20 health workers from across the health centers we support completed a three-day Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) training, delivered by certified trainers from Wolkite University.

The training covered hand hygiene, the correct use of protective equipment, safe handling of sharps, cleaning and disinfection, and infection surveillance and reporting.

There was a strong practical focus, with demonstrations, clinical simulations and role-plays alongside the classroom sessions, so participants could practice what they were learning and relate it to their day-to-day work.

We’re delighted that all 20 health workers completed the course and received certification! 👏

Funding more training like this remains a priority for Engera. Giving local health workers opportunities to build their skills and confidence is so important for improving the quality of care across the health centers we support.

We wish a Happy Ethiopian New Year to all our Ethiopian friends, partners, colleagues, and communities around the world who are celebrating Enkutatash (እንቁጣሽ)!

Today, September 11, marks Meskerem 1 — the first day of the Ethiopian New Year.

The Ethiopian calendar is unique, with 13 months: 12 months of 30 days each, followed by Pagume, the 13th month, which has 5 days in a regular year and 6 days in a leap year. The Ethiopian calendar is a distinct calendar system, approximately 7–8 years behind the Gregorian calendar, rooted in Ethiopia’s rich history, culture, and traditions.

May this new year bring peace, happiness, prosperity, good health, and new opportunities to all who celebrate.

Mahalo nui loa 🌺

Last April, our Hawai‘i ‘ohana gathered at Kevin and Sabrina Jardine’s home for a night of food, drinks, and stories. Together, this wonderful community has raised an incredible $40,000 for Engera.

A huge mahalo to Sabrina, Colleen, and Nicole for bringing the evening to life, and to Kevin and Sabrina for opening their home and helping make the event possible.

The funds raised that evening are already supporting healthcare in the Gurage Zone. Health workers now have a vacuum extractor and delivery kit to help make births safer for mothers. We’re also purchasing a baby warmer for Shebraber, supporting infectious disease training closer to home, and expanding Shebraber Health Center so more families can access care.

Mahalo to everyone who came, gave so generously, and made the evening, and all that has come from it, possible. We’re so grateful for your support and for the part you’re playing in strengthening healthcare in the Gurage Zone of Ethiopia. 🌺
