🇮🇹La sezione ARI di Santa Maria a Monte organizza a livello permanente il Diploma-Concorso denominato "Award Galileo Galilei".
Con questo intende rendere omaggio al grande fisico, astronomo, filosofo, matematico e scrittore, la cui famiglia di origine fiorentina ebbe nel Comune di Santa Maria a Monte una notevole parte di storia.
Qui infatti visse il nonno di Galileo, Michelangelo, e qui nacque Vincenzo, il padre di Galileo, intorno all’anno 1520.
A Santa Maria a Monte la casa dei Galilei è sita in Via Carducci 33.
Intorno alla metà del Cinquecento, Vincenzo si trasferì a Pisa.
Nel 1562 convolò a nozze con Giulia Ammannati dalla quale ebbe sette figli: il primogenito, nato nel 1564, fu appunto Galileo, considerato il padre della scienza moderna per aver inventato il metodo processuale scientifico basato sull’equilibrio tra esperienza e ragione.
Tra le sue scoperte, anche l’osservazione di macchie sulla superficie del Sole, delle quali intuì la vera natura e che gli consentirono di calcolare la durata della rotazione dell’astro.
Accusato dal frate domenicano Tommaso Caccini di voler sovvertire la filosofia aristotelica e le Sacre Scritture, fu processato dal Sant’Uffizio nel 1633.
Impostagli l’abiura «con cuor sincero e fede non finta» e proibito il suo trattato Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo, Galilei fu condannato «al carcere formale ad arbitrio nostro» e alla «pena salutare» della «recita settimanale dei sette salmi penitenziali per tre anni».
Si dice che dopo l’abiura abbia sussurrato la famosa frase «E pur si muove», riferendosi al moto della Terra intorno al Sole.
La prigionia consistette nel soggiorno coatto presso la residenza romana dell’ambasciatore del Granduca di Toscana, e in seguito a Siena, nella casa dell’arcivescovo Ascanio Piccolomini.
A seguito di una denuncia anonima il Sant’Uffizio lo confinò nella villa «Il Gioiello» che lo scienziato possedeva ad Arcetri, con la possibilità di incontrare solo i familiari. Galilei vi morì l’8 gennaio 1642, all’età di 78 anni.

Scopo • Collegare la stazione speciale II5GG (un QSO al giorno per banda e modo)
Bande • Tutte le bande dai 160 ai 6 metri. L’osservazione dei band plan è fortemente incoraggiata.
Modi • CW, SSB, digitali (FT8, FT4, RTTY).
Punteggio • QSO in CW: 3 punti; QSO in SSB: 2 punti; QSO in digitale (FT8, FT4, RTTY): 1 punto.
Per ottenere il diploma occorrono 20 punti per le stazioni italiane, 10 punti per le stazioni europee, 5 punti per le stazioni extraeuropee.
QSL e diplomi • Tutti i contatti saranno confermati via eQSL.
I diplomi in formato elettronico saranno disponibili per il download per tutti coloro che avranno raggiunto il punteggio minimo necessario al loro conseguimento, a fine Award, dopo il 16 ottobre 2025.

🇬🇧 The ARI Section of Santa Maria a Monte organizes a permanent Diploma-Competition called the "Galileo Galilei Award".
This award pays tribute to the great physicist, astronomer, philosopher, mathematician, and writer, whose Florentine family who had a significant role in the history of the municipality of Santa Maria a Monte.
Galileo's grandfather, Michelangelo, lived here, and Galileo's father, Vincenzo, was born here around 1520.
The Galilei family's home in Santa Maria a Monte is located at Via Carducci 33.
Around the mid-16th century, Vincenzo moved to Pisa.
In 1562, he married Giulia Ammannati, with whom he had seven children: his firstborn, born in 1564, was Galileo, considered the father of modern science for having invented the scientific process method based on the balance between experience and reason.
Among his discoveries was the observation of spots on the surface of the Sun, whose true nature he intuited and which allowed him to calculate the duration of the star's rotation.
Accused by the Dominican friar Tommaso Caccini of wanting to subvert Aristotelian philosophy and the Holy Scriptures, the he was tried by the holy inquisition brought him to trials in 1633.
Forced to abjure "with a sincere heart and unfeigned faith" and banned from his treatise Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo was sentenced "to formal imprisonment at our discretion" and to the "salutary punishment" of "weekly recitation of the seven penitential psalms for three years." After abjuring his faith, he is said to have whispered the famous phrase "And yet it moves," referring to the Earth's motion around the Sun.
His imprisonment consisted of forced residence at the Roman residence of the ambassador of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and later in Siena, at the home of Archbishop Ascanio Piccolomini.
Following an anonymous complaint, the Holy Office confined him to the villa "Il Gioiello" owned by him in Arcetri, where he could only see his family. Galileo died there on January 8, 1642, at the age of 78.
Award rules:
Period • From 00:00 UTC on October 1 to 23:59 UTC on October 15 th, 2025.
Participants • Radio amateurs from around the world.
Objective • To contact special station II5GG (One Band and Mode QSO per day)
Bands • All bands from 160 to 6 meters including warc. Observation of band plans is strongly encouraged.
Modes • CW, SSB, digital (FT4/FT8, RTTY).
Scoring • CW QSO: 3 points; SSB QSO: 2 points; Digital QSO (FT4/FT8, RTTY): 1 point.
To obtain the award stations have to reach a specific score:
20 points for Italian stations, 10 points for European stations, 5 points for non-European stations.
QSL and Awards • All contacts will be confirmed via eQSL. Electronic.
Awards will be available for download for all those who have achieved the minimum score required to obtain them, at the end of the Award, after October 16, 2025.
Rankings • A ranking will be drawn up for Italian OM/YLs, one for European OM/YLs, and one for non-European OM/YLs. Real-time rankings can be viewed online at :
