It is important to get your future property in Italy surveyed even if the owners have already done. The purpose of this is to ensure that everything the owners have reported regarding the state of the property is accurate and to get a second opinion on the property to make sure you have a thorough understanding of the state of it. If anything about the property doesn’t conform to the official plans, this will need to be amended before the purchase can go through. This will also help you understand what renovation work you might need/want to do after purchase. The survey should be done before the final deed is signed. You can use a geometra, architect, or engineer to conduct the survey (though a geometra is most common).

Polenta is a very popular comfort food of Northern Italy. It has its origins in similar foods made in Ancient Rome and Egypt with different kinds of flour, but corn itself didn’t arrive in Italy until the 16th century. This boiled cornmeal is served alongside many foods in Venice, Lombardy, and Piedmont, such as ragù, various meats, or sausage and mushrooms. It is also popular in its fried form. You can even find festivals dedicated to this staple food, not only in the northern regions mentioned above, but even in Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany too. Despite its simplicity, it is not necessarily easy to make, requiring nearly an hour of cooking time with a lot of stirring throughout the process. It is well worth it, though, once you are finished!

Did you know that the northern Italian region of Valle d’Aosta has numerous charming medieval castles? There’s Saint-Marcel Castle, dating to around the 14th century and originally owned by the Challant family. For something more recent, you can visit Gamba Castle, built in the early 20th century and today an art museum. Then there’s Ussel Castle, an impressive feat of military architecture, which requires a bit of a trek to reach. Impressively, it was also the first of its kind in the area to be built as a “monobloc”, a single structure. Finally, don’t forget the enormous and magnificent Fénis Castle, well-fortified, with numerous towers and an interior courtyard. It is certainly an impressive sight to behold and well worth a visit.

Even if you speak fluent Italian, there a few situations in Italy that might require the services of a professional translator or interpreter. If you decide to apply for Italian citizenship, for instance, you will need all foreign-issued documents professionally translated (and certified). Professionals know the particular legal terminology of such documents and can often certify—or even swear—the translations as faithful, which might be required depending on where you apply. Similarly, if you plan to purchase a property in Italy, you will want to work with someone is also fluent in English to ensure you understand all the finer technical details about the property and the paperwork involved. In fact, if you aren’t fluent in Italian, you must have an interpreter when signing the Final Deed. These are only a couple examples—a good rule of thumb is to make sure you have the linguistic resources you need when dealing with Italian bureaucracy.

If you’ve ever visited Venice or heard much about the city, then you probably know of “acqua alta,” or the season of “high water.” This is the period, in the winter months, in which the lagoon surrounding the city floods the city itself. Don’t let the word “flood” scare you, though; it is a very common occurrence. The water levels vary greatly depending on where you are in the city. In most cases, there will be much of the city left unaffected. When the flooding is forecasted, sirens will go off around the city to help people prepare. In some places where the water can get particularly high, such as Piazza San Marco, raised walkways will be set up to allow people to cross the waters with ease. As long as you remain aware of weather conditions and dress appropriately, it is not an overall concerning phenomenon.

If you’re learning Italian but find yourself stalled for progress, we have some tips for you! First, if you aren’t already, look into signing up for a course at a language school. Receiving instruction from a qualified professional who knows how to break down the language is well worth the cost and time for improvement. On your own time, though, you can try to immerse yourself in Italian media as much as possible. Listen to podcasts in Italian, watch Italian movies, and try reading Italian books, even short kids’ ones that are level-appropriate, if need be. If you know Italians too, see about asking if someone would be interested in doing a language exchange with you. The best practice comes from listening to and interacting with native speakers. Even if you aren’t a comfortable speaker, try to work as much as you can with the vocabulary you do have, rather than directly translating from English, which will require you to know more complex words and grammatical forms. Patience is key, and with practice you will get there!

For those relocating to Italy with children, schooling is probably one of the most important topics on your mind. Italy in general has an excellent and rigorous school system. It is also the birthplace of Maria Montessori and her famous method. However, international schools are also an option, especially if you would like your child to receive English instruction in the classroom. These schools often grant IB diplomas, recognized in many countries worldwide. You can primarily find international schools in larger cities like Rome and Milan, but they exist all over Italy, so be sure to do some thorough research to find an area you like. There are also schools with instruction in languages other than English, such as French and German.

“Passeggiata” is an important Italian word to learn because of the cultural tradition associated with it. Meaning “stroll,” many Italians enjoy taking a “passeggiata” at the end of the day, or after a large meal, with friends or family. There is no particular destination in mind; it is solely for socializing and enjoying one another’s company. Seeing as it is such a community experience, making a good appearance (“fare una bella figura”) could also important. However, there is no right way—or right time—to do a “passeggiata,” as the whole purpose is to take a leisurely stroll around the town center or wherever you happen to live. Who knows, you might end up running into friends and decide to have an impromptu aperitivo as well.
