“Il processo di espansione dell’io, che spinge l’individuo all’azione, al tempo stesso lo limita. Per questa attività l’individuo si illude prima e resta deluso poi, trova un’effimera gioia seguita da un più lungo dolore. Una grande forza prorompe da questo io, ma è una forza che trascina l’individuo nel dolore, se egli non vi si sottrae.
Superare l’attività espansionistica dell’io significa “morire a sé stessi”: lavorare per amore al lavoro, svelare i segreti della natura per il bene delle creature e non per accrescere sé stessi; significa vivere, muoversi liberamente per la bellezza di una causa in sé e per sé, senza il miraggio di un guadagno personale; significa considerare la vita da un punto di vista completamente diverso da quello secondo il quale gli uomini vivono, agiscono, e tuttavia continuano ad agire, a progredire; significa essere tanto forti e amare tanto la vita da vivere anche senza l’incentivo dell’io.
Esiste un conflitto, nell’individuo. Tale conflitto è sottile e complesso. La sua impostazione può variare da individuo a individuo: a volte il ‘sentire’, la coscienza, non è consona al pensiero; altre volte l’azione è agli antipodi del desiderio; e così via. Il conflitto indica comunque che l’individuo è intento ad accrescere sé stesso. Morire a sé stessi, o superare l’attività espansionistica dell’io, non vuol dire cambiare un atteggiamento ma tutto il proprio essere; significa vivere senza opporre alcun resistenza al fluire in noi dell’unica vita.
Quando siete nel dormiveglia vi appaiono delle fuggevoli immagini. Nel momento che di proposito le volete osservare attentamente, queste scompaiono e vi destate. Così è della realtà: quando la si vuole perseguire con uno scopo, diventa irraggiungibile. Ciò nondimeno, se l’individuo non pone attenzione all’attività espansionistica del suo io, continua a soffrire.
Bisogna che si renda consapevole di ciò che lo muove per sostituire alla spinta dell’io la fede o l’intima convinzione nella comunione di tutto il creato.”

DYING TO SELF ✨
“The process of the ego’s expansion, which drives the individual to action, simultaneously limits them. Through this activity, the individual first deludes themselves and is subsequently disappointed; they find fleeting joy followed by prolonged suffering. A great force surges from this ego, yet it is a force that drags the individual into pain unless they withdraw from its sway.
Transcending the ego’s expansive activity means ‘dying to self’: working for the love of the work itself, unveiling nature’s secrets for the good of all creatures rather than for self-aggrandizement; it means living and moving freely for the beauty of a cause in and of itself, without the mirage of personal gain; it means viewing life from a perspective entirely different from the one by which people ordinarily live and act—while still continuing to act and progress; it means being strong enough and loving life enough to live even without the ego’s incentive.
A conflict exists within the individual. This conflict is subtle and complex. Its nature varies from person to person: at times, one’s ‘feeling’—one’s conscience—is out of alignment with one’s thoughts; at other times, one’s actions stand in stark opposition to one’s desires; and so forth. In any case, the conflict indicates that the individual is intent on aggrandizing the self. Dying to self—or transcending the ego’s expansive activity—does not mean merely changing an attitude, but transforming one’s entire being; it means living without offering any resistance to the flow of the One Life within us.
When you are in a state between sleeping and waking, fleeting images appear to you. The moment you deliberately try to observe them closely, they vanish, and you wake up. Reality is much the same: when one seeks to pursue it with a specific aim, it becomes unattainable. Nevertheless, if the individual fails to heed the expansive activity of their ego, they continue to suffer.
