On this day in 1997, the Los Angeles Dodgers retired Tommy Lasorda's #2 at Dodger Stadium — just 2 weeks after his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Lasorda, born in Norristown, PA to Italian immigrant parents, gave 60 years of his life to the Dodger organization. He said he bled Dodger blue. They made sure his number would, too.

On this day in 1985, the Yankees held "Phil Rizzuto Day" and retired his number 10. The Scooter — Brooklyn-born son of Italian immigrants — wore it for 13 seasons as a shortstop, winning 7 World Series titles and the 1950 AL MVP. Then he wore it in the broadcast booth for 40 more years. One number. A lifetime of loyalty. Holy Cow.

"I bleed Dodger blue." On this day in 1997, Tommy Lasorda was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Born September 22, 1927 in Norristown, PA to an Italian immigrant family, Lasorda managed the Dodgers for 20 years, winning 2 World Series titles and 4 NL pennants. He lived the game with a passion that was entirely his own.
