IABF is committed to building a bridge from America to Italy through baseball.

The Italian American Baseball Foundation works to bridge the gap between Italy and the United States through baseball and softball. IABF’s mission is to grow the game and provide opportunities for youth development through education. The core functions of the foundation are to build a pipeline of baseball and softball players from Italy to the United States through college scholarships and showcases, support the Italian National Teams as American partners and promote heritage and pride for Italian Americans in baseball from high school to the Major League levels.

 The Italian American Baseball Foundation is proud to name Alessandro Maestri our 2026 Ambassador Award honoree🌟
From Cesena, Italy to the Chicago Cubs organization, Alessandro became the first European-raised pitcher in Japanese professional baseball and wore the Azzurri jersey across multiple World Baseball Classics. This year, as Team Italy’s pitching coach, he helped guide the squad’s historic run to its first-ever WBC semifinal.

Happy birthday to Joe Girardi, born October 14, 1964 in Peoria, IL to an Italian American family. He starred as a catcher at Peoria's Spalding Institute, then went to Northwestern, where he earned an industrial engineering degree in 1986 and the Big Ten Medal of Honor. As a third grader, he wrote an essay saying he wanted to play for the Cubs someday, and he did. The Cubs drafted him in 1986, and he went on to play for the Chicago Cubs (1989–92), Colorado Rockies (1993–95), New York Yankees (1996–99), Cubs again (2000–02), and St. Louis Cardinals (2003). Girardi won three World Series rings as a player with the Yankees (1996, 1998, 1999) under Joe Torre. Along the way he caught David Cone's perfect game on July 18, 1999, Joe Torre's 59th birthday. As a manager, he led the Florida Marlins (2006, NL Manager of the Year), the Yankees (2008–17), where he won a fourth ring in 2009, and the Philadelphia Phillies (2020–22). He's part of one of the most remarkable managerial lineages in baseball history.

The Italian American Baseball Foundation was proud to march in the 2026 Columbus Day Parade in New York City, celebrating the rich history, culture and contributions of Italian Americans!

As we walked along iconic Fifth Avenue, we were reminded of the generations who came before us, the sacrifices they made and the opportunities they created. Their legacy continues to inspire our mission of preserving Italian American heritage while creating opportunities for future generations through baseball, softball, education and community.

We are proud of our roots, proud of our community and proud to carry our heritage forward through our unique mission at IABF!

The Italian American Baseball Foundation is proud to name Sam Antonacci our 2026 Future Star Award honoree⭐️

From Springfield, IL to the South Side, Sam has had a season to remember: a two-run homer to help Team Italy beat Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, his MLB debut in April, and a sparkplug role in the White Sox run to the ALCS.

70 years ago today, the only perfect game in World Series history — and Italian American fingerprints are all over it. Home plate umpire Babe Pinelli, himself Italian American, was working the final game of his 22-year career when he punched out Dale Mitchell for the 27th consecutive out. And then Yogi Berra — son of Italian immigrant parents from St. Louis — leaped into Larsen's arms in the most famous image in World Series history.

Happy birthday to Hall of Famer Tony La Russa, born October 4, 1944 in Tampa, FL. As a player, La Russa suited up for the Kansas City/Oakland A's, the Atlanta Braves, and the Chicago Cubs. His Cubs career lasted exactly one game: on Opening Day, April 6, 1973 at Wrigley, he pinch-ran for Italian-American hall of famer Ron Santo in the 9th and scored the walk-off winning run on a bases-loaded walk. It was the last appearance of his playing career. He went on to manage the White Sox, A's, and Cardinals for over three decades and won three World Series titles, with the 1989 Oakland A's, the 2006 Cardinals, and the 2011 Cardinals. His 2,884 career wins rank second all-time behind only Connie Mack. He's one of the most decorated managers in baseball history.

On this day in 2003 — the last game of the Cubs regular season — Ron Santo's #10 was retired at Wrigley Field. Standing on the field, Santo told the crowd: "This is my Hall of Fame." Of Italian descent, Santo spent years inexplicably passed over by Cooperstown. He was finally inducted in 2012, two years after his death. He was right — Wrigley got there first.
