We are encouraged to continue with this program by the continuous and sustained support of the artistic and scholarly institutions in Rome and beyond.

The Ecco Echo Award 2024 encourages and rewards practitioners who express in their works the influence and presence of classical Roman themes in the contemporary arts, in its more ample sense. The competition is open to all, especially artists and practitioners expressly without discrimination, and who work with any medium: sculpture, painting, mosaic, mixed media, installations, etc. To participate, applicants only need to register, follow the rules, and send the materials specified on our website. Classical Revitalisation in Modern Art

Jacques-Louis David’s “Oath of the Horatii” (1789) is an iconic and monumental work of art in the modern world. In the eighteenth century, popular French works were centered around the frivolous tendencies and fanciful lives of the elite and aristocrats, and the Rococo style of painting was made to highlight and glorify life of extravagance. David wanted to bring back the virtuous significance of Greek and Roman art and culture in favor of making something for the people of France. This use of classical imagery and subject matter as well as the “licked canvas” aesthetic would become known as the neoclassical movement of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This painting, a depiction of a classical story of the three Horatius brothers giving an oath to their father to lay down their lives for the regime, became a statement for the people of France. Though originally commissioned by King Louis XVI, it became a call to the citizens of France to pledge one’s virtue and honor to the Revolution. The neoclassical movement was one of the first movements of the modern art world, and this work is often discussed as a catalyst for the French Revolution, leading to the avant garde.
