🌱 Soil profiles are archives of landscape history. Horizon by horizon, they record the influence of climate, vegetation, parent material, topography and human activity—and reveal how soils and landscapes have evolved over time.

This beautifully illustrated volume brings together more than 150 soil profile photographs by renowned American soil scientist Roy Simonson (1908–2008), collected during his long career with the American Soil Survey.

Most profiles are from the USA, alongside 35 profiles from 11 other countries. Each is classified and accompanied by interpretive text, landscape context and, where available, excerpts from Simonson’s travel notes.

🌱 IV Soil Science Meeting of the Northwestern Regional Nucleus

Under the theme “Soil Quality and Fertilization Innovation for the Western Amazon”, the meeting will bring together students, professors, researchers, agricultural professionals, consultants and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge and discuss advances in soil science and its applications in the Western Amazon.

📘 NEW E-BOOK | Applied Pedology

We are pleased to highlight Applied Pedology, the new e-book by Simone Priori, offering a comprehensive introduction to the principles, methods and applications of modern pedology.

The volume is organised into five main parts:

🌱 Your expertise can help shape the future of Soil Literacy in Europe!

Few people understand soil as well as you do and that is exactly why your view matters.

AFES – Association Française pour l'Étude du Sol https://www.afes.fr/ is coordinating SOILSCAPE, https://soilscape.eu/ a European project working with European institutions to help develop a Soil Literacy Portal.

Inspired by initiatives such as UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy Portal https://oceanliteracy.unesco.org/, the portal aims to bring together data, educational tools and art-based approaches to raise awareness about soil creating a genuinely useful resource for people across Europe.

🌍 SOILSCAPE is currently expanding its website into a “Soils & Arts” portal, testing selected features where community contributions will be essential.

The team is now seeking input from people with real experience of soil — scientists, educators, land managers and communicators.

Your experience can help identify:
🔹 What the portal should contain
🔹 Who it should reach
🔹 Where resources are currently missing or underused
🔹 How existing information can be amplified rather than duplicated

📖 The IUSS Presidents Throughout One Hundred Years of its History

As the International Union of Soil Sciences enters a new era, preserving its history is a responsibility we share with future generations. 🌱

This new publication pays tribute to the Presidents of the International Association of Soil Scientists (ISSS), now the IUSS, documenting their lives, contributions, and dedication to the development and strengthening of soil science worldwide.

Some of these pioneers are no longer with us, and information about their work is increasingly difficult to recover. This book therefore serves as both a historical record and a tribute—bringing together their full names, stories, and contributions wherever the available evidence allows.

The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) Annual Conference 2026 will take place 1–4 December 2026 at the University of Aberdeen, under the theme:

“Soils at the Centre of Change: Innovation, Adaptation and Action”

The conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, practitioners and industry leaders to explore how soil science can contribute to practical solutions to today’s environmental, societal and policy challenges.
