Dear JCU community,
Much has already been said about the appalling circumstances befallen upon the U.S. Capitol, causing turmoil and distress to several students and faculty members of our university community – a community that should be founded upon mutual respect and openness.
The siege on the Capitol – and we want to highlight the word siege as the rioters were armed – represent the decadence of moral values and democracy. This attack was made by privileged individuals making an ignorant statement because the circumstances of the elections did not go as they wanted. This attack on democracy is something we should not overshadow.
We extend our utmost support to those affected by the domestic attack on the U.S. Capitol. With news of chaos flooding our screens, we view this as a reminder of the importance of respectful and productive dialogue about our disagreements and grievances. We urge students to participate in discussions on campus. Join the Debate club to further your understanding of rhetoric and effective dialogue, join the Africans in the World Culture Club if you want to educate yourself about racial issues, join MUN if you want to know how to engage in diplomatic endeavors.
Engage with the process, do not become a catalyst to democratic deconsolidation.
We wish you all a good remainder of your holiday break and look forward to seeing you soon.
Best,
Student Government
