Last week, we held our second session of Armenian Women Taking Action for Nature: Preparations for CBD COP17 — and it was a powerful exchange of knowledge and experiences!
This session focused on CBD implementation, monitoring and reporting, featuring four incredible presenters:
Ms. Cicilia Githaiga (Lawyer & Advocate, Kenya) walked us through the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — what it means for women, and how Targets 22 and 23 and the Gender Plan of Action are our most powerful tools.
Ms. Ana Di Pangracio (Fundación Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, Argentina) introduced us to National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans how they bridge global commitments and national action, and how women’s organisations can meaningfully shape them.
Ms. Tiffany Strazza (UNEP-WCMC) guided us through the GBF Monitoring Framework , what gender-responsive monitoring looks like and how non-state actors can contribute to the global review of collective progress.
Ms. Laura Bermudez (Environmental Attorney, Colombia) brought the 7th National Report to life , explaining how national reporting works and why women’s contributions must be visible in it.
The discussion was rich —participants shared their own experiences engaging with Armenia’s NBSAP process, raised thoughtful questions about monitoring and reporting, and brought forward perspectives that reflect the diverse realities of Armenian women ahead of COP17.

On 9 June 2026, our Board of Directors member Ms. Mwanahamisi (“Mishy”) Singano represented the CBD Women’s Caucus at Gender-responsive Environmental Action through the Rio Conventions — a multistakeholder event at the margins of the 2026 UNFCCC Bonn Climate Conference .

The event brought together key voices including Jes Weigelt and Frederike Klumper (TMG Think Tank), Constanze Neher (BMZ), Esther Mwaura (S4HL), Bindu Bhandari and Venge Nyirongo (UN Women), Jeffrey Qi and Angie Dazé (IISD/NAP Global Network), and Andreas Lange (GIZ).

Ms Singano, shared on the synergies between the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan and the CBD Gender Plan of Action. She emphasised that women don’t live single issue lives and our policy frameworks shouldn’t either. Progress has been made, but implementation remains fragmented and under-resourced.

Discussions also highlighted key themes including women’s land rights, aligning national instruments such as NBSAPs and NDCs, connecting gender focal points across conventions, and ensuring women organisations are recognised and resourced as strategic partners — not just consultees.

📢 Help us identify real-world examples of biodiversity policies that advance gender justice!

The CBD Women's Caucus and University College London (UCL) are collaborating on a knowledge exchange project to document and analyse policies that have advanced both biodiversity conservation and gender justice in practice.
We are seeking examples of policies, regulations, strategies, or plans that have been formally adopted and implemented at national, subnational, or local levels in any country — including within territories of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant peoples.
We are particularly interested in examples of policies that have been implemented over time, generating experiences and lessons that others can learn from.
Examples may include:
🌿 Protected and conserved area policies
🌿 Sustainable use and biodiversity-friendly food production policies
🌿 Biodiversity finance mechanisms
🌿 Restoration initiatives embedded in policy
🌿 Policy around gender-based violence
We are looking to talk to people working in government, NGOs, and community-based organisations who have been involved in designing, implementing, monitoring, or evaluating these policies.
Your insights will contribute to a series of policy case studies which will be shared through a webinar and report to be launched at COP17. 🌍

🌍 On World Environment Day, we’re celebrating by sharing the highlights of our third session of the Peer-to-Peer Learning Series on Gender & Biodiversity Data ,held yesterday a powerful exchange focused on data analysis and management! ✨
Three outstanding presenters led the way:
•Berta Gladys Medrano Mejía (Asociación GAIA El Salvador) shared her participatory, gender-responsive methodology exploring how women and men in the Trifinio region differently access and use biodiversity.
•Simoni Medjiwa Kamga (CAED, Cameroon) demonstrated how Indigenous knowledge and mixed-methods data were combined to assess gendered biodiversity loss
•Annick Gillard-Bailetti (Plan International) walked us through Kenya’s COSME dashboard — showing how intersectional gender data and community stories can drive advocacy and decision-making, even in low-connectivity settings.

🌿We just held our second session of the Peer-to-Peer Learning Series on Gender & Biodiversity Data — and it was a powerful exchange of knowledge and experiences ✨
This session focused on methodologies for data collection, featuring three incredible presenters:
🌱 Kristiana Ciocio (iTaukei Women in Conservation) walked us through participatory approaches to documenting and mapping women’s roles in natural resource management.
🎓 Ivonne Salamanca (Bangor University) presented qualitative and quantitative methods for gender-responsive biodiversity data collection — from time-use surveys to gender indicators in biodiversity governance.
🗺️ Jacquelyne Nnassuna (Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development) introduced us to Feminist Participatory Action Research and key ethical considerations when working in community settings.
We are deeply grateful for this collective learning space, where knowledge is being built collaboratively through the sharing of diverse experiences, practices and reflections from around the world. These exchanges will contribute to the development of a collective Handbook on Gender & Biodiversity Data Methodologies 📖✨

🌿 Happy International Biodiversity Day! 🌍✨

On May 22nd, the world celebrates biodiversity. But who’s been protecting it all along?

Women have spent generations documenting, preserving, and transmitting knowledge about the natural world. A landmark 2026 report by the CBD Women’s Caucus and IIED — drawing on 70 organizations across 33 countries — confirms what many already knew: the work exists. The knowledge is there. What’s missing is recognition.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we amplify the women whose fingerprints are already all over the planet’s biodiversity — even if the data systems haven’t caught up yet.

🔅How can civil society meaningfully shape biodiversity governance ahead of COP17 in Armenia? 🌿

At the COOP4CBD Training 2026, held at the French Museum of Natural History in Paris, participants from Europe, Africa, and Latin America — including youth, women’s organisations, and representatives from Indigenous Peoples and local communities — came together to strengthen engagement in CBD processes and advocacy spaces.

The CBD Women’s Caucus participated both as trainees and trainers, bringing gender justice perspectives into the discussions and exchanges throughout the two-day training.

From understanding the CBD architecture and participation rights, to exploring concrete advocacy strategies ahead of COP17, the training highlighted the importance of inclusive, rights-based, and intersectional biodiversity governance.
